Abstract

PORTABLE HEATER WITH INTEGRATE CONTROL SYSTEM

ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE
A heater including a generally cylindrical shell defin-ing its housing arranged in a very closely spaced relation to the outer periphery of its combustion chamber assembly and its fan device as it bounds a plenum chamber therebetween.
The combustion chamber assembly has its discharge end adjacent the discharge end of the shell. The relative configuration of the outer peripheral surface of the combustion chamber assembly and that of the discharge end portion of the shell creates therebetween a passage through which the fan device, on en-ergization thereof, produces a very high velocity flow of a thin layer of air which, on discharge, is throttled and ab-ruptly and sharply driven into the center of the flow from the assembly. The effect of this is to moderate and influence a relative uniformity of the temperature of the discharge and rapidly project it outwardly of and considerably beyond the heater. A further consequence is the creation of such a head of pressure in the plenum chamber as to produce a greater and more uniform pressured flow of air into and about the com-bustion chamber. The whole provides a heater which for a given size has a healing capacity substantially greater than heretofore. The heater also features an integrated control system giving it an uncluttered interior and insuring, to a significant degree, against failure and malfunction. A pre-ferred housing for the heater is a multi-part shell the form of which eliminates need for intervening gaskets.

However, ~or the most pertinent prior art as to the basic composition of a heater of -the type to which the invention is applied, reference is made to U.S. Letters Patent Nos. 4,08~,642 and ~,313,417.
SUMMAR~ OF THE INVENTION:

-According to the invention t~ere is provided a portablespace heater comprising a tubular housing ha~ing an inlet opening at one end, a discharge opening at its opposite end, means therein embodying a combustion chamber adjacent its discharge opening, means for introduction of fuel -to and combustion thereof within said chamber, means for directing a pressured flow of air to said means embodying said combustion chamber and at least in part to, through and from said housing by way of its discharge opening, said air directing means being aligned with, upstream of and spaced longitudinally Erom said means embodying said combustion chamber, adjacent end portions of said air directing means and said means embodying sa:id combustion cha~ber defining the axial limits of a plenum chamber which is peripherally bounded by the inner wall surface of a portion of the length of said housing, other portions of th~ inner wall surface of said housing being respectively positioned in a bounding relatively closely spaced relation to said air directing means and said means embodying said combustion chamber, said plenum chamber being in communication with an entrance to a restricted flow path defined by the spacing between said means embodying said combustion chamber and that portion of the inner wall surface of said housing which is in a bounding closely spaced relation 3Q thereto, said air directing means being operable to deliver a pressured flow of air to said plenum chamber and from said plenum chamber to and through said entrance to said restricted flow path ~ .

A hea-ter per the present invention has a highly improved though simple construction. ~ preferred embodiment lncludes improvements which derive from the construction oE the shell which defines the heater housing and its configuration and arrangement in a very closely spaced relation to the outer periphery of its combustion chamber assembly and its fan device as it bounds a plenum chamber therebetween. The operation of the fan device produces a relatively high velocity, substantially uniformly maintained Elow of air into and about the combustion chamber as well as an even higher velocity thin layered flow of air peripheral to the discharge end of a portion of the combustion chamber assembly which is throttled and deflected on discharge to move directly into the discharge from the assembly in a manner to modera-te and render more uniform the temperature of the discharge from -the assembly and the combustion chamber thereof and to accelerate and more widely and safely spread the total discharge to a degree not heretofore possible using a prior art heater of the same type and siæe.

Claims (14)

The embodiments of the invention in which an exclusive property or privilege is claimed are defined as follows:
1. A portable space heater comprising a tubular housing having an inlet opening at one end, a discharge opening at its opposite end, means therein embodying a combustion chamber adjacent its discharge opening, means fur introduction of fuel to and combustion thereof within said chamber, means for directing a pressured flow of air to said means embodying said combustion chamber and at least in part to, through and from said housing by way of its discharge opening, said air directing means being aligned with, upstream of and spaced longitudinally from said means embodying said combustion chamber, adjacent end portions of said air directing means and said means embodying said combustion chamber defining the axial limits of a plenum chamber which is peripherally bounded by the inner wall surface of a portion of the length of said housing, other portions of the inner wall surface of said housing being respectively positioned in a bounding relatively closely spaced relation to said air directing means and said means embodying said combustion chamber, said plenum chamber being in communication with an entrance to a restricted flow path defined by the spacing between said means embodying said combustion chamber and that portion of the inner wall surface of said housing which is in a bounding closely spaced relation thereto, said air directing means being operable to deliver a pressured flow of air to said plenum chamber and from said plenum chamber to and through said entrance to said restricted flow path to move over and along the length of the outer surface of said means embodying said combustion chamber to extract and carry heat therefrom, means defining a restriction of said restricted flow path downstream of the entrance thereto, intermediate and spaced from the respective end portions of said path, said restricted flow path as thus comprised being constructed and arranged to provide a reactive effect on air moving from said plenum chamber producing an above normal rate of flow of air from said plenum chamber to said combustion chamber, under pressure, to provide said heater with a heating capacity which is substantially above normal for its size.
2. A portable space heater as in claim 1 wherein said means embodying said combustion chamber includes a peripherally encompassing heat shield extending substantially the length of said combustion chamber, in a relatively closely spaced relation thereto, and beyond to a point adjacent and spaced inwardly of said discharge opening of said housing.
3. A portable space heater as in claim 2 wherein said heat shield defines the outer peripheral limit of said means embodying said combustion chamber and the end thereof most adjacent said opposite end portion of said housing lies within a portion of said housing which is acutely angled to substantially overlie the adjacent end of said heat shield in a closely spaced relation thereto to produce a deflected sharply accelerated movement of the air exiting therebetween across the outer end of said means embodying said combustion chamber.
4. A portable space heater according to claim 1 wherein said means embodying said combustion chamber comprises a hollow enclosure defining said combustion chamber and a tubular heat shield in a generally concentrically arranged and closely spaced relation thereto defining therewith a peripherally encompassing relatively narrow flow path the entrance end of which opens to said plenum chamber and the discharge end of which opens immediately about and in a generally concentric relation to the discharge opening from said combustion chamber.
5. A portable space heater according to claim 1 wherein said housing is a relatively thin wall tubular structure the extremity of said opposite end of which is immediately adjacent the end of said means embodying said combustion chamber remote from said plenum chamber and forms therewith a discharge nozzle opening from said restricted flow path which is located to positively direct the air exiting therefrom across the outer end of said means embodying said combustion chamber, at a high velocity and into the discharge therefrom.
6. A portable space heater as in claim 1 wherein the diameter of the inner wall surface of said housing is stepped along the length thereof and successively reduced beyond said plenum chamber to form said restricted flow path, produce said restriction thereof and terminate in an end portion remote from said plenum chamber which extends inward and slightly forward of the end of said means embodying said combustion chamber remote from said plenum chamber to form therewith a substantially radially directed discharge opening from said flow path the cross sectional area of which is less than that of said restricted flow path immediately upstream thereof.
7. A portable space heater as in claim 1 wherein the diameter of the inner wall surface of said housing is stepped along the length thereof, said diameter is substantially uniform from a point slightly upstream of said air generating means, to a point relatively adjacent to but beyond said plenum chamber at which point it is reduced to form means producing a restriction of said restricted flow path and said diameter is reduced at the end portion of said inner wall surface adjacent said discharge opening and so formed at this point to provide a portion of said inner wall surface which inclines inwardly and immediately outward of the end of said means embodying said combustion chamber which is remote from said plenum chamber and forms therewith an annular discharge opening from said flow path the cross sectional area of which is less than that of said restricted flow path immediately prior thereto and provides a substantially radial inward and forward deflection of the flow issuing from said path causing it to intermingle directly with and carry discharge from said means embodying said combustion chamber quickly to a location substantially outward from said opposite end of said housing thereby to control the exterior temperature of said housing and provide a generally uniform and widely spread dissemination of the heat of combustion.
8. A portable space heater as in claim 1 wherein said housing has the configuration of a tubular shell the remote ends of which respectively provide said inlet and discharge openings, said air directing means includes a fan device, said housing has a substantially diametrical split providing upper and lower portions thereof each of which has laterally directed substantially co-planar flanges, said means embodying said combustion chamber and said fan device are constructed and arranged to drop fit to nest, in part, in said lower portion of said housing and have in connection therewith means including brackets projected to overlie and rest on said flanges on said lower portion, ribs are projected from, fabricated integral with and extend longitudinally of the flanges on one of said portions of said housing, the depth of said ribs are approximately in correspondence with the thickness of said overlying portions of said brackets, and said flanges on said upper portion are superposed on said flanges on said lower portion of said housing and clamped thereto and to said brackets with said ribs extending between said brackets, thereby to fix the positions of said means embodying said combustion chamber and said fan device and establish seals between said superposed flanges.

A portable space heater as in claim 1 wherein said housing has a split construction the parts of which are brought together by engagement of one to the other through mating flanges, a portion of said mating flanges have integrated longitudinally extending projections which on abutment thereof to a mating flange provides a seal therebetween as the flanges which mate are fastened one to the other.
10. A portable space heater according to claim 1 wherein said housing is a shell having a cylindrical stepped configuration one step of which is located within the longitudinal limits of said combustion chamber to provide a restriction of said restricted flow path.
11. Apparatus as in claim 1 characterized in that said housing is a tubular shell formed of two substantially hemi-cylindrical parts, said one end of which defines said inlet opening and said opposite end of which said discharge opening and said opposite end has a conically convergent configuration at its extremity the length of which is very short and terminates in a circular lip which bounds said discharge opening and positions forwardly of and in a spaced adjacent relation to the outermost end portion of said means embodying said combustion chamber and a discharge opening therefrom.
12. A portable space heater as in claim 1 including a housing having a split construction, the parts of which mate one to the other to define a tubular shell, facing portions of said parts in part having a longitudinally extending raised surface area which on clamping thereof to a facing portion of said parts forms a seal therebetween.
13. A portable space heater as in claim 12 wherein said housing has a cylindrical stepped configuration, successive longitudinally extending portions of which have different diameters producing different diameters in the successive longitudinally extending portions of its inner surface.
14. A portable space heater as in claim 12 characterized in that said shell is formed of two substantially hemi-cylindrical parts, said shell has an inlet and a discharge end which respectively define its inlet and discharge openings and said discharge end thereof has a generally conically convergent configuration at its extremity the length of which is very short and terminates in a circular lip.
