Abstract

ABSTRACT

A DEVICE FOR REMOVING THE SCRAP ENDS OF CYLINDERS OF
PAPER WHICH HAVE BEEN CUT INTO ROLLS OF TOILET PAPER
OR THE LIKE.

In order to remove the trimmings or scrap portions of cylinders of paper wound on cores, when cut into rolls of toilet paper or towels or the like, the rolls, during their advance, are carried by a bearing guide on one side, whereas at the other side they bear against lugs which move with the rolls. Preferably no lug is present adjacent the trimmings so that the trimmings fall from the guide.

Description

/la :ILZ22199 A DEVICE FOR REMOVING THE SCRAP ENDS OF CYLINDERS OF
PAPER WHICH__HAVE BEEN CUT INTO ROLLS OF TOILET PAPER
O~ THE LIKE

In ord~r to produce rolls of toil~t paper or ab~orbent napki~s for use in the kitchen or the like, rolls or cylinders of paper are formed on cores having a certain len~th and are then cut, by a cutting machine or the like, to form rolls of the desired length.
During this latter operation the ends of the cylinder leave scrap portions or "trimmings" comprising a piece of core projecting from a di~coid representing the end of the wrapped paper and bounded by the first and the last cut throueh the cylinder. The trimrnin~s must be removed in a completely reliable manner to prevent them reaching the packin~ machine to which the rolls are sent since otherwise the machine may become jammed and in any case there will be intolerable irregularities in the packed products. Of course, removal must be as automatic as possible to avoid the pre~ence or responsi-bility of an operator.
The invention relate~ to a device which is disposed between the cutting machine - which cuts the cylinder into rolls - and one or more channels for removing the rolls towards the packing machine or other unit for processing and storage. The device in question eliminates the irregularity and difficulties of existin~ devices, which usually comprise a pair of lDngitudinal bearing guides along which the rolls move, one guide having a ~222~9~
- 2 -ga~ 80 as to drop ~ny article having a length shorterthan a roll.
According to the invention, the de~ice for remo~ing "trimming~ 18 charactsri~ed ~n that the roll~ bear and move on a bearing guid~ di~poDed on one Yide ~her~as on the othsr ~ide they bear on upper lug~ or the like which mov~
in translation with the rolls~ wherea~ the trimmings are unsupported and con~equsntly fall out of the guld~
~r~ferably~ the lug8 or the~ like are missing at the abut-ting ends of ad~acent cylinder~ cut into rolls, at thaplace where the trimmings are present~ ~o that the trimming3 are not supportcd, ~ he lug~ aro borne by a continuous chain or similar element.
Optionally, each roll bears on an arcuat~ 3urface of the lug co~ered by a soft layer, 80 as to compennate at least partly for variation~ ~n diameter of the rolle.
More particularly ~hen the device i8 associated ~ith a machine for cuttine two ro~s of cylindera (and therefore ZO rolls), optionallyf two bearing guides are provided for two row~ of rolls which are subsequently borne by lug~ having a symmetric~l shape and in symmetrical position relative to the two bearing guide~ and the t~o ro~ of roll~. Optionally~ the two bearing guides are on the out~ide and ~he ~ymmetrically shaped lugs comprise a ~ingle member ha~ing a point or the like to form t~o opposl~e bearing~, or the two bearing guides can be on the lnside Qnd the lugs can be on the out~ide.
Optionally, the guide~ compris~ moving belt~.
In one ~o~ble embodiment, the lugs are intermittently moved and BO is the ro~ or rows of rolls coming from the cutting machine. According to an slternative feature, lZ22~99 the lUgB and the lateral bearing guides are moved continuously.
Option~lly, the bearing guide~ comprislng moYing belts~ and the lug8 are driven at a hi~her speed th~n the rolls from the cutting machine.
The in~ention will be more cle~rly u~derstood from the accompanying description and dra~ing~ ~blch show a non-limit~tivo embodiment of the in~rention.

As ~hown in the accompanylng dlagrams~ a dovlce 1 ~posed downstream of a cutting machine ior remo~lng rolls compri~es continuou~ conYeyor~ 3~ shown in,the fo~m of two belts in the drawings, which recei~e,the two rows of rolls coming from the cutting machine ~n the direction of arrow f3. Con~eyors 4 are di~po~ed~up~tream of con~eyor~ 3. Ad~antageously, con~eyor~ 3 and 4 are drlvcn in translatlon in th~ direction of arro~ fT ~o that the t~o rows of roll~ ad~ance at a epacing ~rom one another~ the apacing being obtained by mov~ng at a h~gher ~peed than th~t at which the cylinders and roll~ formed therefrom advsnce intermittently in the cutting machine.
Conveyors 3 may likewi~e adv~nce intermittently or may move continuou~ly.
Near the inlat end of the ~uide~ or conveyors eupply-ing rolls R, the outlet ends of two continuou~ annular belt con~eying means 5 forming part of conveyors 4 are disposed along~ide and outside of the roll~ R. Belts 5 ~re guided by ~roo~ed wheels 7 whose ax~8 1~ parsllel : ~2Z2199 and relati~ely near to the axi~ 9 of the pulle~s guiding conveyor~ 3. Belt~ 5 are al~o guided in grooved wheels 10. Actuat$ng mean~ (not shown~ Qre provided for continuously or intermittently dri~ing belts 5, the motion being in all CaBQB sy.nchrenized with the motion of the means for ~upplying the rolls and the acrap portion~ to be removed therefrom.
A continuous conveying atructure compri~ing lug~, to be dèecribed at greater length hereinafter, i~ disposed above and on the in3id~ of belts 5. A 8upport 12 for an axis 14 extendine towards the outlet end of the device i3 mounted on a ~antry structure 1A extending, from the frnme 1~ ~herea~ a second support 16 i~ dispose~ on a ~econd gantry 1B oppo~ite ~he groovsd wheel~ 7 and guide axis 9~ the support 16 being adapted to ad~u~t the position of projections 18 for holdin~ a sh~ft 20 ~o as to ad~u~t the between-centre~ distance between ~haft~ 14 and 20 for purposes described hereinafter.
~he ad~ustment i~ made e.g. via ~ean~ compri~ing a screw 22 and lock-nut, ~upport3 12 and 16 are ve~tically ad~u~table in position, a~ they ~re ~uidsd by mo~ing ~erticsl ly on gantries 1A and 1~ re~pectively and c~n be secured or adjusted on vertical threaded rods 24 engaeln~
threaded holss or nuts ~n 8UpportB 12, 16 re~pe~ti~ely.
Rod3 24 can be rotated via pairs of toothed bevel gears, u8ing a common longitudinal ~haft 28 operated by a handwheel 30, It is thus possible to ad~ust the level of the two ~hsfta 14, 16 relative to structure 1 and consequently relative to con~eyors 3 and particularly to conveyors 5. Pro~ections 18 cEn be ad~usted ~o as to ad~u~t the di3tance bet~een the centres of ehaft~
20 and 14~ Shaft 14 bears a chain wheel 34 and shaft 1222~99 20 bears a chain wheel ~6, the two ser~ing to guide a chain 38, the length of which can be modified. The chaln may be replaced a~ required by the operation, ~.e. in pract~ce in dependence on t~e axial lengt~ of the rolls to be manipulated. Shaft 20 or more' particularly shaft 14 can be actuated e.g. via a chain transmi~sion (general reference 39). At equidistant positione, chain 38 bears attachments 40~ each having a pointea cross-section with arcuate concave ed~es~
advantaeeously covered by a soft la~er 40A. The concave cro~e-~ectlon~ of attachments 40, in co-operation with the ~oft layer~ 40A, ~dapt to the curv~ture of the moving roll~ with a tolerance a~ regards the radii o~
curvature of the outer cylindrical surface~ of bhe rolls, for purposes de~cribed hereinafter, Attachment~ 40 constitute lug~ or the like ~or retaining rolls'R, which ars moved forward intermittently or oontinuouely ~n the direction of arrow f3 by feed means in the cutting machine or by other ~eans conveying them to bel~ 5 and to the bottom ro~ o~ lug8 40. ~he cro~s-section shows the relative position of belts 5, rolls R - which move forward in t~o row~ side by side and at a limlted epace apart - and lugs 40~ which extend along the bottom branch of chain 38. ~ugs 40 are disposed at intervals roughly corrsspondlng to the spacing between adJacent rolls R advancing at intervale in two rows~ the rolls in the t~o rows being ~ide by eide BO as ~imultaneously to mQke contact with the ~ame lug 40 at an intermedlate po~ltion ln the length of -the roll~ of the palr of rolls ln question. Con~equently, ~ince the distance between the top brnnch~n of the two belts 5 1s greater than the bet~e~n-centres distance between palrs of rolls eide by side ~n the ~222~99 two ad~ancing ro~s~ the t~o rolls are supported at the top and partially inside the upper branche~ of belt~
5, wherea~ their inner upper cross-section bears again8t the respective ~oft l~yers 40A on the lug~ opposite the pair of roll~ in que~tlon. The arrangement i~ ~uch that the distance between th~ top branches of belts 5 i9 ~reater than the sum o~ the dlameters of the pQir of rolls side by side. In all cases, each roll i~
disposed betwee~ a lug and the top branch of on~ o~
belt~ 5, ~elt~ 5 and chain 38 are moved forward in per~ect synchronlem~ eith~r continuously or int~rmittently and preferQbly at an aver~ge speed ereat~r than tho apeed of advance of the rolls in the ¢utting mabhine~
from ~Ihich they arrive in the direction of arro~ f~.
A~ shown more partlcularly in Figs. 1 and 4, chain 38 has an irregularity, i.e. the absence of a lug 40 in at least one position 40X. ~he two lugs adJacent po~ition 40X~ at which a lug i8 missing~ are separated by twice the distance between the other lu~8, Con-sequently, if a roll R moves paet position 40X it ~ill fall as 800n as lt loses contact ~ith the conveyor 3 which brought it. Chaln 38 is adjusted and pha~ed in accordanc9 w~th the ~ap bet~een rolls ad~ancing in the same row, B0 RB to position the lugs opposite the rolls ~nd more p~rticularly near the centre thereof.
In addition, the chain must be such that the or each irregular position 40X corresponds to the position of ths sbutting ends of two contiguous cyllnders in the cuttin~ machine. Consequently the ~bsenae of a lug in position 40~ will correspond to the space b~tweon cuts ~X snd TY (see Fi~. 4) made by the cutting machine on the end port~on of a preceding cyl~nder ~nd on tho lnitial 1222~99 portion of th~ ~ollowing cylinder. Cut~ TX ~nd TY
are ~eparated by the ~ame spacing a8 betwe~n the ends of each roll R. A~ i8 known~ cut TX and cut TY, which are made by blade ~ in the ~ame m~nner a~ the cuts ~
for separating rolls R fr~m one another in cylinder B, reeu~t in the formation of two scrap portio~s o~ ~trimm~ng~"
~X and RY re~pectively. Consequently, the pairs of scrap portiona RX and RY, when theg advance in the dir~ction of f2 and m~k~ contact with the upper branches of the corre~pond~ng belb~ 5, ~ill not bear Qga~nst a lug ~ince they are oppo~ite the irregular position 40X
where a lug 40 is ab~ent. Con~equently, trimming~ RX
and RY ~all between the two belt~ 5 ~hereas the pairs of ragular roll~ R move for~ard since they are ~upported by belta 5 on the out~ide and at the bottom and by the concave cross-sections of lUe8 40 on the inolde and at the top, until they are brought to the do~nstream processing machinee.
In ad~acent cylindera~ the cores u~ually pro~ect to ~ limited extent and abut and, ~n ¢o-operation with the ~xial end~ of t~e r~els of paper on the t~o cylinders~
define a limited, relatively con~tant epace sllghtly le88 than the axial dimension of a roll, thus limiting the amount of scrap rapre~ented by the two trimminga RX and RY cut at ~X and TY. Consequently the two trimmlngs RX snd ~Y arrive at the bottom branch of chain 38 at a di~tance from one another, ~hen they are not alresdy fallen from the side through lack o~ ~upport, onln~ to their limited axis~ lcngth. O~ing to the space bet~een ~craps RX snd RY, they are likely to f~ll even ln the pre~ence of a lug 40. However, the irregular ab~ence of a lug at po~ition 40X (corresponding to the position , ~Z22~99 in which the ~craps RX and RY arrive at the beg~nning of the bottom branch o~ chain 38) i~ a very rel~abla means of preventing a scrap portion from bear~ng ag~ln~t a lug and continuing to mov~ forward with the rolls to be pQeked.
In ord~r to adapt the device to the diam~t~r o~
the roll~ in the t~o advsncin~ rows, tho h~lgh~ o~ 6h~t~
14 and 20 can be adju~ted until 1U~B 40 are at ~uitable level~ alon~ the bottom branch'of cha~n 38~ thu~
providing lateral 8upport for the rolls. Alternatively, grooved wheele 7 and 10 can be moved tr~nsveraely into a po~lo~ at which the two belt~ 5 are a suitable distance apart for supporting the, rolls. The dl~tance bQt~een th~ top branche~ o~ b~lts 5 should be ~ufficient ly great~r than ths cu~ o~ the diameters of two rolls advancing eide by ~ide to en~ure that t~o ~crapa or tri~mine~ do not eupport one another and remaln,si~e by side when they fall. However~ this may ~l~o be avoided by placing an ob~tacle under the rolls which continuoualy ad~ance and are supported by belts 5 and by the lug8~ Ths obstacls acts on the ~crap~
which fall in contact with one another when ~he di~tance between belts 5 along the top branch i8 lees thnn the sum of the diametsr~ of the two rolls or trimmlngs side by aide.
The upper br~nches of the two belta 5 wlll be suitably held to pre~ent them moving apart.
With re~ard to the distance bet~een lug~, chain 38 and lugs 40 mu~t be adjusted to the ~pacing bet~een conti~uou~ rolls ad~ancing in each of the t~o ro~a.
~his mny necessitate vary~ng the poaition of the 1UgB
on the chain or replacing the chain by different 122;~ 99 _ g _ chain~, a~ can be dsnQ by ~d~u~ting the distance between the centres of shafts 14 and 20 and/or the Yvheeis by chaln 34 and 36 .
Of cour~e, the drawing~ show only one embodime~t, 5 gi~ren only as a practical demonstration of thQ invention, which cRn be varied in its form or feature~ without thsreby departing from the ~cope of ths in~t~nti~re idoa.
