Abstract

SEALED SWITCH MOUNTING
ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE

A sealed control mounting for use in combination with a glass topped unit is formed by means of a collar surrounding the shank of the control unit that projects up through the glass with one end of the collar bearing against a support panel under the glass. A resilient sealing gasket surrounds the collar and overlies the glass top and is compressed by a rigid member overlying the gasket until the end of the collar is pressed against the support plate, thereby clamping the control to the support panel with the resilient gasket applying a resilient pressure to the glass so that the glass reinforces the support panel while limiting the pressure between the washer and glass.

- l - Case 2901 SEALED SWITCH MOUNTING
Field o the Invention The present invention relates to a mountiny structureO More particularly the present invention relates to a resilient sealed mounting for securing a control in the top of a glass topped appliance.
Back~round of the Present_Invention Glass topped cooking units wherein the control knobs extend through the glass top and are mounted on the suppurting plate therebeneath are not new. Such devices normally incorporate a shank passing up through a small hole in the support panel or plate with a nut threaded onto the shank and passing through a larger hole in the glass unit to directly cla~p the control unit to the supporting plate. Thereafter, an annular gasket is pushed in a friction fit into the large hole in the glass panel to seal the hole around the shank and then a control knob is applied to the control shaft that projects upwardly through the shank.
operation of controls, as are currently specified by Underwriters Laboratory, require before ~, the control, say a temperature control for a surface element, can be rotated to activate, that the control shaft be moved axially. The axial movement tends to move the whole control inward and deflect the supporting plate which is normally a sheet metal S~7~;~0
- 2 - Case 2901 plate This deflection of the support plate can, in many cases, be felt in the control knob giving an unpleasant feeling of instability to the unit.
Brief Description of the Present Invention It is an object of the present invention to provide a more stable mounting for a control used with a glass topped unit wherein the glass top is used to reinforce tbe support plate in mounting of a control.
Broadly, tbe present invention relates to a glass topped appliance comprising a support plate, a glass plate supported on said support plate~ a control element having a shank, axially aligning passages in said support plate and said glass plate, said passage in said glass plate being of larger diameter than said passage in said support plate, said shank passing through said passages, an enlarged abutment means co.nnected to said shank and bearing against the surface of said support plate remote from said glass plate, a rigid collar surrounding said shank and passing through said passage in said glass plate with an axial end of said collar bearing against the surface of said support plate adjacent said glass plate, whereby said support plate is trapped between said abutment means and said axial end of said collar, a resilient gasket means encircling said collar on the side of said glass plate remote from said support plate, rigid annular member overlying tbe said gasket means, the thickness 30 of said gasket means plus the thickness of said glass ;
plate being greater tban the axial length of said collar and means on said sbank for forcing said rigid member towards said support plate whereby to compress said gasket means so that said collar means clamps said support plate between said axial end of said collar and said abutment means. If desired the rigid . . ~

- 3 - Case 2901 member may be integral with the collar or may be a separate washer.
Preferably the gasket means will be larger in diameter than the rigid member and will bave an up-standing rim that engages a knob on the control means to provide a further seal with said knob.
Brief Description of the Drawings Further features, objects and advantages will be evident from the following detailed description of the preferred embodiments of the present invention taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is an enlarged schematic illustration of a section throuyh half of the control mounting.
Figure 2 is an axial section tbrough control mounting constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 3 is a section through one half of a control illustrating a modified gasket having a lip forming a seal with the control knob of the control.
Figure 4 is a view similar to Figure 1 showing a modified form of the invention, and Figure 5 is a view similar to Figure 1 showing another embodiment of the invention.
Description of the Preferred Embodiments ~ eferring to Figure 1, the control schematically indicated at 10 is composed of a shank 12 with an enlarged section or abutment portion 30 14 connected thereto and containing tbe operative i, elements. A control shaft 1~ extends axially of the shank 12 and is adapted to connect a knob such as knob 18 shown in Figure 3 to the operative elements (not shown)O
The control 10 is mounted in the appliance on a support plate 20 which will normally be made of .

?j~
4 - Case 2901 sheet metal (steel). On top of the support plate 20 is the decorative glass plate 22. The shank 12 passes up through an aperture 29 in the plate 2U and an aperture 26 in the glass plate 22, the aperture 26 being of larger diameter than the aperture 29. A
resilient sealing yasket such as a rubber gasket`~8 is applied to the face 30 on the glass plate remote from the plate 20. This gasket 28 has an annular opening 32 that is also of larger diameter than the aperture 29 in the plate 20.
An annular collar 34 is received within the apertures 26 and 32 in the glass plate 22 and gasket 28 respectively and has an axial length less than the combined thickness of the gasket 28 and glass plate 22 but greater than the thickness of the glass plate. One axial end 36 of the collar 34 bears against the upper surface 38 of the support plate 20 immediately adjacent the aperture 29.
In the Figures 1 to 3 embodiments an annular washer 40 encircles the shank 12 and has an inside diameter as indicated by the aperture 42 to receive the shank 12 and so that the body of the washer overlies the other axial end 44 of the collar 34.
~ suitable nut 46 is threaded onto the threads 48 formed on the shank 12.
To mount the control 10 onto the plate 20 the nut 46 is tightened on the threads 48 on the shank 12 to force the washer 40 against the top end 44 of the collar 34 and thereby clamp the plate 20 between the enlarged portion 14 of the control 10 and the bottom axial end 36 of the collar 34 thereby providing a positive clamping action between the nut 46, washer 40, collar 34 onto the panel 20. Obviously this clamping action also compresses the gasket 28 to provide an annular seal
- 5 - Case 2901 encircling the aperture 32, substantially as shown in Figure 2.
Such a clamping arrangement provides, as above indicated, a solid clamping force between the collar 34 on one side of the panel 20 and the enlarged portion 14 on the other side of the panel 20 to firmly secure the control 10 to the mounting panel 20. At the same time tbe resilient gasket 28 is compressed which applies a force to tbe glass plate 22, bolding the same firmly against the plate 20. Axial movement of the control 10 is thus resisted by the plate 20 and resiliently through gasket 28 by the glass plate 22, whereby the glass plate reinforces the support plate 20 and substantially prevents deflection of the plate 20 when the shaft is moved axially into the operative position as indicated by the arrow 50. Thus, as above described, the control 10 is firmly anchored to the support plate 20 and the support plate is reinforced by a glass plate 22 through the : compressible gasket 28.
In the Fiyure 3 embodiment, the mounting is substantially the same and thus like parts have been indicated by like reference numerals. In this particular case the gasket member 28 has been replaced by a gasket member 52 which is substantially cup-shaped and has an annular flange 54 that terminates in an annular lip 56. This lip 56 is received within a cavity 58 in the knob 18 and bears against an annular wall 60 of the cavity 58 to provide an annular seal between the lip 56 of gasket 52 and the wall 60 of the knob 18.
It will be apparent the Figure 3 arrangement completely seals ofE the control mechanism 10 from the surrounding atmosphere. The seal of Figure 2 has been found adequate, however, ~5'~
- 6 - Case 2901 the seal of Figure 3 provides extra protection.
In the embodiments illustrated in Figures 4 and 5 similar reference numerals have been used to designate similar parts to those, for example as shown in Figure 1.
In the Figure ~ embodiment the collar 34 has been replaced by a collar 34a which is substantially the same as an integral combination of the washer 40 and collar 34 of the Figure 1 to 3 embodiment. In this arrangement the axial length of the tubular section 35 of the collar 34a is in effect equivalent to the length of the tubular section of collar 34 of the Figure 1 embodiment so that the annular flange 40a, which ~orms an annular rigid member, bears against the resilient gasket 28 to force the gasket against tbe glass plate 12 and the glass plate against the support plate 20 with the axial end 36a of the collar 34a abutting against the upper face of the support plate 20 so that the support plate is clamped between the abutment 14 and the axial end 36a of the collar 34a.
The Figure 5 embodiment is very similar to the Figure 4 embodiment however the collar member 34b is substantially Z-shaped in configuration and has a radially outwardly extending annular Elange or annular rigid member 40b and a radially inwardly extending flange 41b extending from the tubular section 35b. In this arrangement the nut 46 is received through the tubular section 35b and bears against the upper face of the internal annular flange 41b so that the bottom ~ace of this flange is indicated at 36b wbich forms the axial end of the tubular section 35 bears against the upper face of the plate 20 the same way as the ends 36 and 36a of the previous embodiments function thereby to clamp the plate 20 between the abutment 14 and the
- 7 - Case 2901 collar 34b. Obviously the outer annular flange 40b bears against and compresses the resilient gasket 28 in the same manner as did the wasber 40 of the embodiments in Figure 1 to 3 and the flange 4Ua of the Figure 4 embodiment.
~ aving described the invention, modifications will be evident to those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
