Description
6~
This invention relates to a wheel structure for automobile wheels.
A wheel structure is known for automobiles in which the outer circumferential surface of a disc is fitted into an inner circumferential surface of a rim, and the disc is joined to the rim by welding the edge of one side of the outer circumferential surface of the disc to the inner circumferential surface of the rim. The disc and rim are then coated with a rust-preventing film. However, a hollow in the unwelded side of the joint between the rim and disc in this wheel structure is not fully filled with the coating material. Therefore, the rust-preventing film on the unwelded side portion of the joint comes off, water enters the joint, and causes rust. This makes it difficult to maintain the rust resistance of the joint for a long period of time.
According to the present invention there is provided a wheel comprising: a first rim member and a second disc member joined to one another by welding along the outer circumferential edge of said disc member and form-ing an open acute angle hollow at the joined portions of said first and second members along the other side of said disc member; a polymerizable sealant resin packed into said hollow for sealing and rust preventing said joined portionsj and a rust-preventing film coating the surface of said first and second melllbers and said sealant. Suitably the resin is an ultraviolet-curing resin.
Thus, the present invention provides a wheel structure, in which the hollow in the joint between the rim and the disc of the wheel, is filled with a sealant and thereafter covered with the coating material to form a rust-preventing film thereon, whereby the rust resistance of the joint can be maintained for a long period of time.
. .
The present invention will be further illustrated by way of the accompanying drawings in which:-Fig. 1 is a side elevational view in longitudinal section of a wheel structure according to the embodiment ofthe present invention; and Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of a section II in Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, a wheel structure 1 comprises a light alloy, such as aluminum alloy, in which the outer circumferential surface of a disc 3 is fitted into the inner circumferential surface of a rim 2. The inner edge of the outer circumferential surface of the disc 3 is then weld-ed at portion 4 to the inner circumferential surface of the rim 2. A sealant 6 is packed into a hollow in the unwelded side of the joint 5 between the rim 2 and disc 3, and a synthetic resin coating material is then applied to the entire wheel structure to form a rust-preventing film 7.
The hollow in the unwelded side of the joint 5 packed with the sealing material 5 is thus covered by the rust-prevent-ing film 7, which is thereafter bake-dried.
As the sealing material 6, silicone rubber, an anaerobic resin, or an ultraviolet-curing resin may be used.
In consideration of mass-productivity of the wheel structure 1 and the

In consideration of mass-productivity of the wheel structure 1 and the

e~iciency of filling the hollow in the joint ~ with the sealan~ 6, ~he ultraviolet-curing resin is the most suitable.
Anaerobic resin is a resin which polymerizes and cures when ~.t is isQlated from air. The ultraviolet-euring resin is a resin which is polymerized and cured by 300-400 ~m ultraviolet rays within several tens of seconds, and which forms a film having high adhesion and chemical resistance.
If the hollow in the joint 5 is filled with the sealant 6 as in the present invention, water cannot enter even if the rust-preventing film 7 covering the unwelded side of the joint 5 peels off. This maintains the rust-resistance of the joint 5 for a long period of time. Even when the unwelded side of the joint ~ is positioned in a valley defined by the surfaces of the rim 2 and disc 3, as in the embodiment shown in the drawings, the unwelded side of the joint 5, i.e. the valley therein, can be covered with a smooth round surface formed of the sealant 6 packing the hollow. Thus, the rust-preventing films 7 on the rim 2 and disc 3 are continuou~ with each other in a comparatively even manner via this smooth surface.
Accordingly, the rust-preventing film 7 is not broken at the not-welded side of the joint 5.
The present invention can be applied to not only a welded wheel as in above embodiment, but also to a wheel in which two separate complementary rims and a disc are joined together by nuts and bolts.
According to the present invention described above, the hollow in the joint 5 between the members 2; 3 of the wheel structure 1 is packed with the sealant 6, and the rust-preventing film 7 is formed on all surfaces of the sealing 6~5 ma~erlal 6 and ~he members 2, 3. Therefore, even iF the rust-presenting Film 7 covering the joint 5 peels off, water is prevented from entering the hollow in the joint 5 by the sealant 6. Accordingly, the rust resistance of the joint S
can be maintained for a long time.
