Abstract

ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE
A necktie comprises a knot panel, a front panel which hangs freely from the knot panel and a neck strap which attaches releasably to the knot panel, and which is adapted to fit beneath the collar of a shirt to support the necktie. The knot panel has a central portion with side portions on each side thereof. A
plurality of clasp fasteners are arranged on each of the side portions, with any one fastener on one of the side portions being adapted to engage with any one of the fasteners on the other side portion when the side portions are folded over. By folding over the side portions, a tie knot is formed from the knot panel. The tie knot can be selectively varied in shape and size depending upon which of the fasteners on each of the side portions are engaged with one another.

SPECIFICATION

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
This invention relates to neckties.
This invention is concerned with a necktie which includes a knot panel member, a front panel which hangs freely from the knot panel member and a neck strap adapted to engage the knot panel member and be concealed beneath the collar of a shirt.
An object of the present invention is to provide a necktie as described above having a knot panel member which can be easily adjusted by the wearer so that the shape and size of the knot created thereby can be selectively varied.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
According to the invention there is provided: a necktie comprising: a knot panel member having a central portion and a side portions extending downwardly and laterally from each side of the central portion, each side portion having a plurality of fasteners located thereon such that when the side portions are folded over, to form a tie knot one of the fasteners on the one side portion is adapted to engage with any one of the fasteners on the other side portion so that the size and 7~S~

shape of the knot created thereby can be selectively varied according to which of the fasteners are fastened :together, the knot panel member further including a pair of looped members at the upper edge thereof; a front panel member fixed to the lower edge of the central portion of the knot panel member and hanging freely therefrom; and a neck strap adapted to fit beneath the collar of a shirt, the neck strap having a hook member at each end thereof adapted to engage with the loop 10 members on the knot panel member so as to hold the knot panel member adjacent the collar.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
.
In the drawings:

Figure 1 is a front elevation of a necktie of the invention in the unfastened condition; and Figure 2 is a side elevation of the necktie shown in Figure 1 in a partially fastened condition.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT

Referring to Figure 1 of the drawings, there is shown a necktie of the invention which comprises a knot panel 1, a front panel 2 and a neck strap 3. The knot panel 1 includes an upper edge 101, a lower edge 102 and ~7~iS~L

two side edges 1l1 .~nd 11~, ~Jhich edges define (I central portion of the knot pc~rlel 1.
Extendincl 3Owrlw~rdly and Ou1:wardly frorn each side of the central portion of the snot panel 1 is a side portion 103, 104. The side portions 103, 104 have outer edges 109 end 110 which are continuous with the side edges 111 and 112 respectively of the knot panel 1.
The side portions 103, 104 also have lower edges 107, 108 and inner edges 105, 106.
The front panel 2 includes longitudinal edges 201 and 202.
The side portion 103 is provided with three linearly arranged male clasp fasteners 113, 114 and 115 while the side portion 104 is provided wîth three 15 linearly arranged female clasp fasteners 116, 117 and 118. The male clasp fasteners 113, 114 and 115 are affixed to the knot panel 1 on opposing surfaces thereof to that of the female clasp fasteners 116, 117 and 118.
A pair of loops 119 and 120 are fixed to the 20 upper edge 101 of the knot panel 1. The neck belt 3 has at each end thereof a hook 301 and 302, adapted to catch in the loop 119 and 120 respectively.
The preferred dimensions of the knot panel 1 are as follows: the upper edge 101 is approximately 8.4 25 centimeters; the side edges 111 and 112 are 76S~' approximately one-half the length of the unpel- edge lr)l~
and are each approximately 4 centirneters; the lower etl~3e is approximately 1.4 times that of the sicle edges and is approximately 5.6 centimeters; the inner eclges 105 and 106 are approximately 1.6 centimeters, being about 4/lOths of the length of the side edges 111 and 112; the lower edges 107 and 108 are approximately 2 centimeters, being about half the length of the side edges 111 and 112; the angle of intersection between the inner edges 10 105 and 106 and the vertical is approximately 57;
and the angle of intersection between the lower edges 107 and 108 and the outer edges 109 and 110 respectively is approximately 70.
As shown in Figure 2 of the drawings, the side 15 portions 103 and 104 can be folded back so that at least one of the male clasp fasteners 113, 114 or 115 on the side portion 103 can be engaged with at least one of the female clasp fasteners 116, 117 or 118 on the side portion 104. Thus, for example, fastener 113 can be 20 engaged with any one of fasteners 116, 117 or 118. The size and shape of the knot in each case made by the knot panel 1 is different and the knot panel 1 can therefore be selectively varied by the wearer depending upon which male clasp fastener(s) is/are engagecl with which female 25 clasp fasteners.

` ~L9'7~5~1 Once the size and shape of the knot has been selected by fastening a particular male clasp fastener to a particular female clasp fastener, the hooks 301 and 302 are engaged with their corresponding loops 119 and 120. The neck strap 3 is concealed beneath the collar of a shirt while the knot, made by the knot panel 1, and the front panel 2 are exposed in front of the shirt.
It will be noted that when the side portions 103 and 104 are folded back to form a knot, the male and female clasp fasteners are concealed behind the knot and therefore not visible.
The present invention thus provides for a necktie requiring less material than a conventional necktie. The necktie may be comprised of any material, 15 including silk, rayons, synthetic fabrics, furs, snake hides, and the like.
The invention is not limited to the precise details described with reference to the drawings. Thus, clasp fasteners may be provided on both surfaces of each 20 of the side portions 103 and 104 so that the side portions 103 and 10~ can be folded in either direction relative to the plane of the knot panel 1. Different designs may be provided on each side of the knot panel 1, as well as on the front panel 2, so that a single 2S necktie, depending upon how it is worn, has two distinct color schemes.
