Abstract
ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE
A warning system and ram saver for a blow out preventer includes a control cylinder connected to the lines supplying hydraulic fluid to the blow out preventer, and a pneumatic diverter valve connected to the hydraulic cylinder. The diverter valve is in the air line between the air clutch control valve and supply for the drum clutch, which operates the main hoisting winch to move the drill string through the blow out preventer. When the blow out preventer is closed and the drum clutch control valve is opened in an attempt to operate the main hoisting winch, the diverter valve prevents air flow to the drum clutch and causes the air to flow to a horn, which provides a warning that the blow out preventer is closed.

Description
This invention relates to a warning system, and in particular to a warning system for use with a hydraulic operated blow out preventer.
The conventional blow out preventer contains so-called pipe rams. The drum clutch, i.e. the clutch used to cause movement of production tubing or drill pipe can be engaged with the blow out preventer pipe rams closed. Under such circumstances7 iF a coupler on the drill pipe comes into contact with a pipe ram, the pipe either parts or the derrick may suffer severe structural damage, with the possibility of injury or death to rig workers.
The object o-f the present invention is to provide a warning system for a blow out preventer which renders it impossible to engage the drum clutch with the pipe rams closed. To the knowledge of the present inventor, no such system exists at present.
Accordingly, the present invention relates to a warning system For use with a blow out preventer of the type including at least one set of fluid operated pipe ram, a source of fluid for operating the ram, and control lines for supplying fluid to the ram, the blow out preventer being mounted on the top end of a well casing containing drill pipe, or production tubing which is moved through the

Accordingly, the present invention relates to a warning system For use with a blow out preventer of the type including at least one set of fluid operated pipe ram, a source of fluid for operating the ram, and control lines for supplying fluid to the ram, the blow out preventer being mounted on the top end of a well casing containing drill pipe, or production tubing which is moved through the
2() blow out preventer by a hoisting drum, the drum being operated by a druln clutch and air received From an air supply, the warning system comprising control cylinder means in fluid communication with said control lines; piston means in said control cylinder for movement in response to closing or opening of the blow out preventer; diverter valve means connected to said piston means, sa;d diverter valve means a~
normally permitting the flow of air from said air supply to said drum clutch when the blow out preventer is open for operating saicl drum clutch, and air operated audible signal means in fluid communication with said diverter valve, whereby, when the blow out preventer is closed, the air supply to said drum clutch is blocked and air is supplied to said signal means.
The invention will now be described in greater detail with reference to the accompanying drawings, which illustrate a preferred embodiment of the invention, wherein:
Figure 1 is a schematic block diagram of a blow out preventer and warning system in accordance with the present invention and Figure 2, 3 and 4 are schematic block diagrams of elements o-F
the system of Figure 1 with the blow out preventer open, closed and closed with manual override, respectively.
With reference to Figure 1, the warning system of the present invention is intended ~For use with a blow out preventer 1 including at least one hydraulically operated pipe ram (not shown). Hydraulic fluid is supplied to the blow out preventer from a source of -Fluid (not shown) through a line 2, a control valve 3, and control lines 4 and 5. The blow out preventer is mounted at the top end of a well casing string 6 containin~ tubing or drill pipe 7.
The warning system of the present invention includes a control cylincler 8 containing a piston 9. The cylinder 8 is connected to the control lines 4 and 5 by lines 10 and 11, respectively. Thus, movement of the blow out preventer ram between the open and closed positions
normally permitting the flow of air from said air supply to said drum clutch when the blow out preventer is open for operating saicl drum clutch, and air operated audible signal means in fluid communication with said diverter valve, whereby, when the blow out preventer is closed, the air supply to said drum clutch is blocked and air is supplied to said signal means.
Thus, movement of the blow out preventer ram between the open and closed positions

results in corresponding movement of the piston 9. A rod 12 connected to the piston 9 opera-tes a diverter valve 13. Air flow from an air supply 14 through line 15, a clutch control 16 and line 17 is controlled by the valve 13. With blow-out preventor open such air normally flows through line 18, a Tee coupling 19 on a spool YalVe 20 and line 21 to a drum clutch 22. The drum c7utch 22 operates the main hoisting drum (not shown) in the normal manner to cause movement of the dril~ pipe 7. Alternatively, with blow-out preventer closed air can flow from the valve 13 through a line 23, the spool valve 20 and line 24 to an air horn 25. The spool valve 20 is provided with an operatiny lever 26, which is manually actuated. Actuation of the lever 26 causes air flowing through the line 23 and the valve 20 to be diverted through the stem 27 of the Tee coupling 19 and line 21 to the drum clutch 22.
Referring to Figures 2 to 4, operation of the warning system of the presen-t invention will now be described in greater detail. When the blow-out preventer is open and the clutch control valve 16 is opened (Figure 2), air from the air supply 14 flows through the lines 15 and 17, the diverter valve 13, the line 18, the Tee coupling 19 and the line 21 to the drum clutch 22.
Such air flow permits movement of the drill pipe 7 through the blow out preventer.
When the blow-out preventer is closed (Figure 3), the piston 9 of the cylincler 8 closes the diverter valve 13 with respect to the line 18 and opens the valve to the line 23. Thus, when the valve 16 is opened in an attempt to operate the main hoisting drum, air from the supply 14 flows through the spool valve 20 and the line 24 to the air horn 25, providing an audible warning tha-t the blow-out preventer l is closed. At the same time, ~4--the air supply to the drum clutch 22 is blocked, and thus engagement of the drum clutch is prevented.
If it is necessary to engage the main hoisting drum while the blow-out preventer rams are closed, the operating lever 26 of the spool valve 20 is moved to open the line 23 through the stem 27 of the Tee coupling 19 (Figure ~) to the line 21. The lever 26 must be held in position. When the lever 26 is released, it springs back to the by-pass position (Figure 2).
Thus5 there has been described a simple, yet efFective system for preventing operation of a drill string hoisting mechanism when the blow-out preventer is closed, and for provicling a signal indicating that -the preventer i s cl csed .

results in corresponding movement of the piston 9.
