Abstract

ANIMAL COLLAR

Abstract of the Disclosure A flexible, padded animal collar is releasably attachable around an animal's neck to prevent the animal from turning its head upon itself to lick at wounds, rip out sutures, dislodge surgical dressings, or other-wise interfere with the animal's convalescence from an injury or veterinary operation. The collar is suffi-ciently bulky to prevent the animal from turning its head upon itself, yet not so bulky that it unduly obstructs the animal's movement. The collar is softly padded to maximize the animal's comfort.

Description

ANIMAL COI.LAR

F'ield of the Invention This application pertains to an animal collar;
particularly, a pro-tect.ive collar (also known as an "animal restraint collar") Eor preven-ting an injured animal from turning its head upon itself to lick at a healing wound, rip out sutures, dislodge surgical dress-ings, etc.

Background of the Invention Various protective animal collars have been provided for preventing an animal from turning its head upon itself to lick at a healing wound, rip out sutures, dislodge surgical dressings, or otherwise interfere with the animal's convalescence from an injury or veterinary operation. One prior art collar, commonly called the "Elizabethan collar" is made of manilla and patterned somewhat similarly to the circular, ruffled collars affected by Queen Elizabeth I of England and her cour-t-iers. The Eli~.abethan collar is fas-tened around the animal's neck and protrudes away from the neck anywhere from 4 to 10 inches (the size of the collar varies with -the size of the animal - larger collars being required to protect larger animals). The Elizabethan collar has, however, enjoyed only marginal success since its large diameter unduly restricts the animal's normal movemen-t.
Veterinary clinics often suggest that animal owners themselves make another type of prior art collar ~ ~3.L'~
by cu-tting the bottom out oE a large plas-tic bucket and then piercing -the buc]cet bottom with an a~)erture of a size suEficien-t to allow -the bucke-t bo-t-tom to be fi-tted over the animal's head to snugly encircle its neck and resist the animal's effor-ts to dislodge the bucket bot-tom Erom around its neck. Al-though veterinary clinics commonly recommend that the edges of -the pierced aper--ture be padded with tape for the animal's comEort, the relatively narrow thickness of the bucke-t bottom often appears to cause discomfort to the animal. Fur-thermore, -the relatively large diameter of the bucket bottom collar presents excessive obs-truc-tion to the animal`s normal movement, causing many animal owners -to remove the collar altoge-ther from their pets, thereby defeating the intended purpose of -the collar.
United S-tates pa-tent Nos. 3,013,530;
3,036,554; and, 4,413,558 granted, respectively, 19 December, 1961; 29 May, 196?; and, 8 November, 1983 for inventions of ~eman; Johnson; and, Lindholm respective-ly, provide various prior art animal protective collarswhich are very similar to the Flizabethan and bucket bottom collars described above and subject to the dis-advantages inherent in those collars.
The present invention overcomes the disadvan-tages of the prior art collars by providing a collar having a padded, flexible casing which may be releasably attached around the animal's neck. The casing is padded with soft material to ensure the animal's comfort. Suf-ficien-t padding is used -to give the collar enough bulk to prevent the animal from turning its head upon itself ~:L~ 7'~

to interfere with healing wounds, .sutures, surgical dressings or the like. However, the collar is not made so bulky that it protrudes so far beyond the animal's neck that the collar interferes with the animal's normal movement.

Summary of the Invention In accordance with the invention, there is provided an animal restraint collar comprising a softly padded, elongate flexible casing having releasable attaching means at opposed ends of the casing for releasably attaching the collar around an animal's neck.
The casing is padded to make it roughly circular in cross-section. Preferably, Eor a small animal such as a cat or small dog, the collar has a diameter of about 2 to 4 inches. For a larger animal such as a large dog, the collar may have a diameter of about 4 to 8 inches.
Advantayeously, the collar casing is formed of a wear-resistant washable material such as nylon or plasticized paper. The casing may be padded by stuffing it with a material such as polyester battingO Velcro'~
separable fastening material may be used as the releas-able attaching means.

Detailed Descri -tion of the Preferred Embodiment .P
r~'he drawings illustra-te an animal collar 10 which comprises a padded, elongate flexible casing 12.
Releasable attaching means such as Velcro~ fasteners 14 are provided at opposed ends of casing 12 so that collar 10 may be releasably attached around an animal's neck.
Casing 12 is preEerably formed of a wear-resistant, washable material such as nylon or plastici-zed paper. (Plasticized paper suitable for the purposesof the invention is available under the trade marks Kimdura~ and Tryvek~). Casing 12 is padded by stuffing it with a soft material such as polyester batting.
Casing 12 is padded to make i-t roughly circular in cross-section, thereby giving the collar sufficient bulk to prevent the animal from turning its head upon itself, hut without malcing the collar so bulky that it unduly interferes with the animal's normal movement.
An animal collar in accordance with the inven-tion for use with a cat or small dog may have a casing12 formed by longitudinally folding an 18 inch long, 5 inch wide nylon or plasticized paper strip in half, sew-ing the adjacent edges toge-ther to form a rough cylin-der, padding the casing by stuffing it with polyester padding and then sewing the ends toge-ther to close the casiny. The resultant collar shou:Lcl have a diameter oE
about 2 -to ~ inches. Collars :Eor larger an.imals (i.e.
having a diameter of about 4 to ~ inches) may be formed by increasing the dirnensions to yield a eollar of a size sufficient to comfortably encircle the animal's neck and having enough bulk -to prevent the animal from turning its head upon itself, yet not so bulky that the animal's normal movement is res-tricted.
Materials such as nylon and polyester are par-ticularly suited for use in constructing collar 10,since they may easily be washed and dried to maintain the collar in a hygienic, attractive condition. Collars having casings formed of plasticized paper may be cleaned by wiping them with a damp cloth.
As may be seen, the invention provides a com-fortable animal collar with enough bulk -to prevent the animal from turning its head upon itself to interfere with healing wounds, sutures, surgical dressings or the like, but which does not protrude so far beyond the ani-mal's neck that the animal's normal movement is unduly interfered with.
As will be apparent to those skilled in the art in the light of the Eoregoing diselosure, many alterations and modifications are possible in -the prac-tice of this invention without departing from the spiritor seope thereof. Aeeordingly, the seope of the inven-tion is to be eonstrued in aeeordanee with the substanee defined by the following elaims.
