Description
LUBRICATING OIL CO~OSITION COMPRISING LUBRICATI~G OIL, A BASIC METAL SAI.~ ~ND AN ALKOXYLATED METAL DITHIOPHOSPHATE
~he invention relates to a lubricating oil composition comprising a major proportion of a lubricating oil and a minor proportion of a basic metal salt and an alkoxylated metal dithiophosphate.
Non-alkoxylated metal dithiophosphates such as zinc di-alkyldithiophosphates (ZDTP) are currently used in lubricating oils as extreme pressure/anti-wear and anti-oxidant additives.
From German patent application 2,216,684 lubricating oil compositions are known comprising a lu~ricating oil, alkaryl-oxypolyalkoxylated zinc dithiophosphates and N-acylsarcosin as eomponents, while other addi-tives such as basic barium sulphonate may be present. These lubricating oil compositions are used as lubrieants ~or hydraulie power transmission systems for whieh lubrieants are needed with a long duration.
~rom U.S. patent speei~ication 3,337~65l~ a metal dithio-phosphate similar to that which is part of the present lubricating oil composition is known. However, the combination in a lubrieating oil composition o~ this type of metal dithio-phosphates with basic alkali or alkaline earth metal salts o~ earboxylic acids, sulphonic acids, naphthenic acids or alkyl phenols is neither described nor re~erred to in the above patent speci~ication.
Applicants have ~ound a lubricating oil composition which shows a combination of unexpected activities. It shows not only the desired ZDTP activities like extreme pressure/anti-wear activity but moreover it appears also to boost the anti-rust performance o~ basic metal-containing detergents.

The present invention provides a lubricating oil composition comprising a major proportion of a lubricating oil and a minor proportion o~ each of:
I an oil-soluble metal compound selected from the group consisting of basic alkali or alkaline earth metal salts of carboxylic acids, sulphonic acids, naphthenic acids and alkyl phenols, and II a group II metal dithiophosphate, based on an alkoxylated alcohol, with formula:
S
(c2H4o)x(c3H6o)y - P - (OC3H6)q(oc2H4) OR2 S.M2 wherein R1 and R2 are non-aromatic hydrocarbon radicals each having from 1 to 30 carbon atoms and wherein x, y, p and q each are numbers in the range from 0 to 10, x + y + p + q ~ 1, and M is selected from the group consisting of Zn, Mg, Ca and Ba.
Preferably, x - p is in the range of from 0 6 and y = q is in the range of from o-6.
The hydrocarbon radicals R1 and R2 have preferably 3-18 carbon atoms. The group II metal M is preferably zinc.
The oil-soluble metal compound (compound I) has prefer-ably a basicity index of 2-10 (number of equivalents of metal per equivalent of acid). Compound I is preferably an alkaline earth metal salt of a C6 20-alkylsalicylate, such as a Ca-~ Ba-~
Sr-or Mg-salt, preferably a Ca-salt, and mixtures -thereof, e.g. a mixture of a Ca-salt and a Mg-salt.
The lubricating oil composition preferably comprises 85 to 99.45%~ of a lubricating oil and from 0.5 to 10%w of compound I
and from 0.05 to 5%w of compound II. Preferably the lubricating oil composition contains a high viscosity index (HVI) lubricating oil (VI at least 80).

The present combination of additives may be used together with other additives incorporated in the luoricating oil com-position.For example viscosity index improvers, pour point depressants, anti-foam additives, detergents, anti-oxidants, anti-corrosion additives, etc. may be present in the oil com-position which comprises the present combination of additives.
The present invention will now be illustrated with reference to the following Examples.
E~AMPLE I
In order to compare the anti-rust performance of an oil composition comprising normal zinc dithiophosphate and a basic calcium alkylsalicylate with an alkyl group containing 14-20 C-atoms and having a basicity index of 3.0 (Composition A) with that of oil compositions comprising polyalkoxylated zinc di-thiophosphate and the above basic calcium alkylsalicylate (Compositions Bn) a constant-interface neutralization rate test was carried out with each of the lubricating oil compositions.
The constant-interface neutralization rate test is a test for determining the time needed ~or neutralization of acid by the oil composition. Neutralization is determined with a pH meter.
A HVI base oil was used. As reference an oil composition com-prising 96%w of the HVI oil ~ 4%w of the above calcium alkyl-salicylate (totally 20 grams) was used.
The experiment was carried out as ~ollows: 20 grams of the oil composition and 100 ml 0.001 N H2S04 were stirred at 90 C
and the pH value was measured. The time needed for neutralization of the reference oil composition was given the rela-tive neutral-ization time value: 100.
In Table I the relative neutraliza-tion -time of the oil com-posi-tions A, B (n = integer) and the reference oil composition is given.
Composition A is the reference oil composition to which a normal zinc dithiophosphate with formula:
.
, R10 - P - OR2 , wherein R1 = R2 = C12 ~ C15 sznO.5 has been added. Composition B is the reference oil composition to which an ethoxylated æinc dithiophosphate with ~orrnula:
S
1 2 4 )x( 3H60)y - P - (OC3H6)q(oc2Hl) OR2 ZnO . 5 has been added.

From Table I it is clear that zinc dithiophosphates based on etho.Yylated alcohols greatly reduce the neutralization time of the basic calcium alkylsalicylate, whereas normal zinc di-thiophosphate has little effect on the neutralization rate of the basic calcium alkylsalicylate.
