"Artificial insemination instrument ~or livestock"

SPECIPIC~TION

N K N UND or -H~ IN e N lU~
This invention relates to an artificial insemlnation instrument for livestock~ particularl~
swine.
In the art o artificial insemination o livestoc~
it is known that the sperms o* swine are shorter lived than those of other livestock~ and hence long-time preservation of swine semen ls attended b~ dlfficulties.
fn order to pOpularise arti~cial insemination o swine, it is necessary to allOw easy access to semen o~
choice boars 7 and to ensure easy treatment thereof so that any~average ~armer can preserve and use such semen without requiring an~ spe i~ic skill nor a~ complicated equipment. Howe~er, as things stand now, there are few ~armhOuses which are furnished with a rerigerator sui~able or preservation o semen, and in most cases, : ::
~20 ~ semen~is procured from a dealer and inseminated each time a breed sow comes into heat~.
lso~ in~the operation for injectlng the thus procured semen into the uterine cavit~, it is usual to~Suck up~semen into an inje~tor from a container~ then insert the l~je~tor into the vagi~al region and inject the semen. In such an operatiOn~, however~ semen o~ten 10ws back from the cervical canal~ resulting in ~insuf1cient injection of semen into the uterine cav~ty.
9~ se ~ per~D~ su~h ~em~a~ w~ ~r 30~ more sows successively b~ uslng a single ~njectorg it :
- 2 _ ~ 3 ~530 needs to disinfect the injector which touches the cervical canal with an antiseptlc solution or boiling water at each time of use 7 because otherwise an undesirable e~fect might be given to the sperms and reduce the impregnation rate. Thus~ the currently practiced semen injecting operation is not easy and involves many dlfficult problems~

OBJECT OF THE INYENTION
In view of the above 3 the present invention has for its object to provide an improved instrument for arti~icial insem~nation of livestock~ particularly swine~ capable o acilitating semen preservation and elongathon of its shel lie~ and allOwin~ immediate injection of s~men from the inje~tor with no need of transfusing semen from a p.reservation container lnto the ~njector. It is alsO an object to provide an injector which prevents backflow of semen and c~n be securely inserted deep lnto the cervical canal. It is a further object ~o provide an injector in wh~ch the portion which touches the cervical canal is easily replaceable~ thereby avoiding the necessity of : disinfection at each time of use of the instrument.
In general~ it is the object of th~ invention to provide a device wh~h is ver~ ~anitary ~nd which provides a marked improYe~ent in impregnatlon rate.

The in~ention is now described in detail with refere~ce to an embodlment thereof shown in the accompanying drawlngs.
In the drawings:

l:)ESCRIPTION OF THE PREFE~RED E;MBODIM~SNT
The instrument accor~in~ to this invention may be roughly divided in~o the following three parts:
a semen reservoir 1, a semen in~ector 11 and a pump 10.
First 7 the semen reser~oir 1 is descrlbed with reference to ~g. 1. It i5 to be noted tha~ a dialysis preservat~on technique ~s emplo~ed for preservation ~ Of semen in this invention.
: : In Fig~ 1, referenc~ numeral 2 indicates an inner cylinder made from a d~alysis film ~such as cellophane~ and designed to contain se~en therein.
This inner c~linder 2 is disposed in an outer c~linder : 3:made rom a s~nthetIc resin film such as polyprop~lene ; ~ or vin~l, with a predetermined space provided there-be~ween to form a double-cylindered structure~ The : ~ dialyzate (such as;serum~, which îs a nutrient source : for the semen, is filled in the space between said : ~ inner cylinder 2 and outer c~llnder 3.
Both ends of said inner and Outer cylinders 2, 3 are tightly sealed by packing members 4a9 4b each of - 4 ~

1 3 66~30 which comprises 0-rings 5 and associated rubher bands 6 for securing tightnessl ~ach of said packing members 4a, 4b is provided with a ~rst tube 7a (7b~ which is communicated with the chamber defined by the inner c~linder 2 and a second tube 8a ~8b) which is -communicated with the chamber defined between said inner cylinder 2 and outer c~linder 3. The openings of these tubes 7a, 7b~ 8a, 8b can be sealed b~ a plug 9.
The two tubes 8a~ 8b could both be arranged at a same end~ and need not be at diferent ends as shown.
The semen injector 11 is now described with reerence to ~i~. 20 In the drawin~ reference numeral 12 denotes a hOlder pipe made of stainl~ss steel or other suitable matPrial and which has at its rear end a grip 13 and is alsO provided at its ~ore end with a re~ovable cylindrical member lS having a bulge 16 at an end~ In this holder pipe 12 is slidabl~ inserted a tube 17 o which the fore end is jo ned ~ a detachable joint 20 to an injectlon tube 19 which is arranged to be e~tendable telescop~cally through said end-bulged cylin~rical member 15 telescopicall~. The rear end of said tube 17 is joined to a connection pipe 18 which~is connected to one o~ said first tubes 7a or 7b pro~ided in the packing members 4a, 4b o~ said semen reservoir 1. In the grip 13 is provided a stop screw 14 ~or fixi~ the injection tube 19 at a desired extended position. This stop screw 14 bears laterally against the plpe 18 to inhlbit sliding movement o the tub~ 17~

Lastly~ the pump 10 comprises a generall~ known t~pe of rubber pouch and a pipe lOa connected thereto as shown în Fiy. 1~ said pipe lOa being connected to one Of the irst tubes 7a or 7b provided in the paclcing members 4a, 4b to trans~er pressure into the inner cylinder 2.
For storing semen in the instrument of this inventiOn 7 a semen collectOr is connected to one of the tubes 7a or 7b in the packing members 4a~ 4b and the semen is charged into the inner c~linder chamber 2, an~ ater completing thi~s operatiOn~ the tube is again plugged. In the meant~me, the dialyzate is poured into the outer cylinder chamber 3 from one of the second tubes 8a or 8bo Thus~ the supplied semen is encompassed by the dialyzate with the dialysis film therebetween so that nutrition is given to the sperms.
As the sperms are refrigerated at 15C under such a : sealed condition~ they can be kept live and active for as long as 7 to 8 da~s. Also~ no sped flc re~rigerator is ; 20 required~ and an~ ord:nary domestic refrlgerator can be used for preservation.
For performing insemination~ firstly the connection ~ pipe 18 of the semen injector ~1 is connected to one of :~ :
~ the first tubes 7a or 7b o the packing me~bers 4a~ 4b : o~ the semen reservoir 1 that has just been taken out of : : the rerigerator~ and the other of said first tubes is ~: ~ connected ~ the pump 10 to thereby complete the set upO
~hen ,~ with the semen reservoir 1 held by one hand of the operatOr ~r preferabl~ suspended from the operator's neck, the hoIder p~pe 12 of the seme~ injector 11 is :: ~

- \
6 ~ 3 {3 inserted into the v~gina 21 so that the end-bulyed cylindrical member lS is inserted through the outer os uteri 22 intO the cervical canal 23 as shown In ~ig. 3.
With the cylindrical member 15 kept inserted in the cervical canal 23~ the connection pipe 18 is moved forwards by a length of about 3 to 4 cm so that the injection tube 19 pro~ects out ~ a length ~ from the c~lindrical member lS to advance deep into the uterine cavit~ 24. The injection tube 19 is fixed at khis position b~ means of the stop screw 14 at the grip 13, and then the manual pump 10 is operated to in~ect semen in the inner cylinder chamber 2 into ~he uterine cavity 24 through the injection tube 19. ~urlng -~his semen înjection operation~ the bul~e 16 at the end of the cylindrlcaI member 15 presses tightl~ against the wall of tha cerv~cal canal 23 to inhibit backflow o~ semen, allOwing the whole~supply of seme~ ~o be injected into tha uterine cavity 24.
; : After completion of in~ection~ the holder pipe 12 :20~ is pulled out of the vagina 21 and the cylind~ical member 15 a~ the and thereof is removed to replace the nject~on tube 19 and tube 17 with new ones, and:after setting~them properly, the device is used for the next ;; r~n e~inseminatlon operation~
Referring now to ~ig. 4, there is shown a modifîed form of semen lnjector. As compared with the structure des ribed abOv~ w~th referen~e to ~ig. 2, in the modiied :: :
instru~ent~ the s~op screw 1~ tube 17 and joint 20 are eliminated.: The injector tube 19a ls modified so as to ~: ~ 30 ba attached ~ threading to a modiied bulge 16a formed :: :

directly on the end of a modiied h~lder pipe 12a.
This permits the projecting length ~ of the tube l9a to be easîly adjusted by rotation relative to the bulge 16a, and the tube l9a can be readll~ removed a~d replaced. The structure is alsO simpliied in that the pipe 18a is now directly connected to a reduced nipple 26 formed on the end of he modified grip 13a~
Thus~ with the device of this lnvention, adopting the dialytic preservation method, the reserve of semen can be stored for a long time in an ordinary type of refrigerator, and in the insemination operatiorl~ such reservoir can immediatel~ serve as a semen supply tan~, allOwing injection of semen with no risk of exposure to the outar air~ thus el~minating the problem of mixing of su~dry ~erms or degeneration of semen and also allOwîng eas~ prepara~ion or the injection operation~
Further~ Owing to prolongation of the semen shelf li~e~ it is unnecessar~ to take the trouble of procuring seme~ each time a sow comes into heat, and semen can be readily used ~hanever lt is needed.
~ urther 7 sirlce an end-bulged c~ rical portlon is provided at t~e end o~ th holder pipe of the semen Injector~ and the in~ection tube can be exterlded out a desired length ~rom said cyl~ndr~cal portion~ said ~njectiOn tube can be inserted deep into the cervical canal with no risk of lnjuring the uterus b~ the instrumen~ while preventl~g backflow o~ semen~ so that the sem~n ma~ntaining hlgh spermal activit~ owing to : 30 dial~tic~preser~ation ~an be injected sufficiently ~ into th~ uterine cavity to .improve the fertllisatiOn : rate~

In additiOn~ since both the injection tube and tube 17 can be easil~ removed from the ho:Lder pipe and are replaceable with new ones ater each use for an in jection operatlon, disinfection of the princlpal parts Of the instrument is unneces~ary to promote efficiency of the injectiOn work whiïe allOwing alwa~s clean and h~gienic insemination Operation~
