Abstract

ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE

A locking device for connecting between a multi-grooved pillar member and a multi-grooved beam member comprising an elongated casing, an operation means received in said casing for slidable movement between the retracted and advanced positions and having hook portions adapted to engage said pillar member to connect between the pillar member and beam member in the retracted position of said operation means and a wedge member received in said operation means and having an arrow-shaped leading end to cause said hook portions to engage said pillar member when said operation means in its retracted position.

BACKGROUND OF T~E INVENTION
This invention relates to lmprovement~ in a locking device for aonnecting betw~en a multl-grooved hollow pillar m~mber and a multi-grooved hollow beam mambar which h~ve b~en of late increasingly u~ed or provi~ing a framework portion or partltion of a show ca~e or shelf.
. There have been propo~ed and practically employ~d a variety of locking d~vice~ of this~type and the locking device of this type is inserted into the hollow body of a multi-grooved hollow beam member until a ~hreaded hole in the base or rear end o the device align~ with ~ through hole in the beam member and a ~crew i~ screwed through the through hole into the threaded hole to cau~e the hooX portion~ at the leading end of the loc~ing device to protrude out of.

SUMMARY QF THE INVENTION
Therefore, the pr~ent invention i8 ~ to provide a locking deYice for connecting between a multi-grooved hollow pillar member and a multi-grooved hollow beam ~ember which can effectively eliminate the di~-advantag~ of the priox art Iock~ng device~ of the type and which is simpler $n construction.
According to the present invention, there has bQen provided a locking device adapted to be received in the hollow body of a multi-grooved hollow beam member to connect said beam member to a multi-grooved hollow pillar member which compri~es an elongated cas ~ng of U-shaped cross-section open at the opposite ends and having a threaded hole in one of the opposite side walls of ~aid ca~ing, an operation mean~ extending with-in ~aid casing for movement botween operative a~d non-operative positions along the longitudinal ~xi~ of the - casing and havtng hook portlon~ for ~ng~ging and di~-engaging from a ~elect~d one of th~ grooYe~ ai d 3 1 1~0422 pillar member and a wedg~ membar rece~v~d in said operatlon mean~ to cause sald hook portlon~ to ~ngage a~d disengage ~rom s~id selecte~ groove in th~ groov-~d plllar member as ~aia opera~ion m~an~ move~ between said operative and nonoperative positions.
The above and o~her ob~ects and attendant aduantages o~ the pre~ent ~nv~ntion will be more r~adily apparent to those sXilled in ~he ar~ from a r~ading of the ollowing detalled descr~ption in conjunctlon with the accompanying drawlngs which show one pref~rred embodim~nt of the pxe~ent invention for illu~txation purpo~e only, but not fox limiting the scope of the 8ame in any way.

DESC~IPTION OF PREF~RRæD EMBODIMENT
~he pr~sent inv~ntlon w~ll be ~ow de~cribed - J 1~22 r~ferring to the accompanying drawings in which one preferred smbodim~n~ o the lo~king device o~ the invantion ~8 ~hown for illustration purpose.
The locking device of the invention generally comprisas an elo~gated flat battom plate 10 and a pair of opposite ~ide walls 11, 11' which have the 8am~ length as the bottom plate 10 and are connected at the bottom to the innex or upper sur~ace of tha ~ottom plate lO at the opposite ~ide edges of ~he latter by means of con~entional tongue and groove con-nection mean~ ~not shcwn) to form an open-ended casing of U-shaped cross-section as ~een in end eleva-tion. Each of the side wall~ ll, ll' i~ form~d on the top thereof with an upright ear lla which i8.
lS adapted to be press-fitted in the associated one of r~co~ses 12a, 12a formed in an ~longated flat top plate 12 which has the ~ame dimensions as the bottom plate 10 and cover~ the ca~ing formed by the bottom plate lO and side wall~ 11, ll'. The sid~ wall ll also has on the outer surface a bulge llc pro~ided wi~h a threaded hole in which a hollow ~crew 23 having a pointed l~ading edg~ and a hexagonal thr~d~d inner surface i~ to be received. One of the sid~ walls ll' is recessed at Il'c to provide an abut-mQnt thQ the purpo~ of w/hich w11l be al~o d~scribed herein~fter. ,_ A slidable operation mean~ 13 extend~ longi-tud~nally and i8 slldably received in the casing formed by the bottom plate lO and side walls 11, 11' and compri~es a pair of simllar elongated npxight plates 14, 14 put together back to back. The one or leading ~nds of the plates 14, 14 are bent outwardly ~n the opposite direation~ at right angles with re~pect to the rest of the plate6 to provide hood portions 15, lS of which description will be made hereinafter and the plate~ are rigidly secured to each other at L6 adjacent to the other or rear end~ thereof by means of spo~ welding, for example. The plates 14, 14 include openings 17, 17 coextend over a ~ub~tantial length between the hook portions 15, 15 and th~ 8pot weld~ng 16 or the purpo~e to be describe~ hereinaEter.
The rear or right-hand edge of the opening 17 in the plate 14 which faces the ~ide wall 11 is bevelled at 18 for the purpose to be described hereinafter.

As shown in Fig. 4, the pillar member 30 comprises a hollow body of squar~ cro~ section having vertical grooves 31, 31 form~d on its vertical two ad~acent faces disposed at right angles to each o~ler. ~ach vertical groove 31 i8 defined by the associated one face of the hollow body of the pillar member serving a~ tha bottom o~ the groove and a pair of opposite and spaced s~de walls extending outwardly Erom the ~ottom and bent at the leading or outer edges 32 towsrds each other at right angles with re~pect to the rest of the side wall~. Similarly, the beam member 40 compri~es a square cross-section body having horizontal grooves 41 form~d on its three ad~acent horizontal faces di~-posed at right angles to each o~her. Each ~.ori~ontal groove 41 i8 de~ined by the associated one facQ of the hollow body of the beam member serving as the bottom o the groove and a pair of opposite and spaced side walls extending outwardly from the bottom and bent at the leading or outsr edge~ 42 towards each other at right angle~ with respect to th~ re~t of the ~lde wall~.

In this po~ition of the locking device, the hook portion~ 15, 15 at the ~5 leadin~ end3 of the plate~ 14, 14 of the operation means 13 protrude out of the leading end of the beam member 40 into the ad~acent groove 31. Thereafter, the hollow screw 23 is inserted through the aligned through hole 43 and the threaded hole in the bulge llc and then driven by a suitable driver (not shown) in the tighten-ing direction. Thus, different from the conventional lockinq dev~ce of ~his t~pe in which the connection bntween the 5 pillar and beam mQmbers 801~l1y relys ~lpon 'che abut-ment of the expanded hook portion again~t the pillar m~ber groove side walls, according to the present invention, both the fa~tened screw and expand~d hook portions firmly hold the pillar and beam me~llbers in thelr connected condition and ~us, the present in-vention will contri~ut~ to the art gxeatly.

Claims (4)

WHAT IS CLAIMED IS:
1. A locking device adapted to be received in the hollow body of a multi-grooved hollow beam member to connect said beam member to a multi-groov-ed hollow pillar member, comprising an elongated casing of U-shaped cross-section open at the opposite ends and having a threaded hole in one of the opposite side walls of said casing, an operation means extend-ing within said casing for movement between operative and nonoperative positions along the longitudinal axis of the casing and having hook portions for engaging and disengaging from a selected one of the grooves in said grooved pillar member and a wedge member received in said operation means to cause said hook portions to engage and disengage from said selected groove in the grooved pillar member as said operation means moves between said operative and no nonoperative positions.
2. The locking device as set forth in Claim 1, in which said operation means comprises a pair of elongated plates put together back to back and having said hook portions at the leading ends and secured together at the rear ends, said plates having through openings between said leading and rear ends, and said wedge member is received in said through holes in the plates and has an arrow-shaped leading and adapted to separate said hook portions from each other to cause the hook portions to engage said selected groove in the grooved pillar member as said operation means moves to said operative position.
3. The locking device as set forth in Claim 2, in which the rear edge of said opening in one of the plates is bevelled and a screw having the pointed leading edge is received in said threaded hole so that said pointed leading edge of the screw is guided along said bevelled edge as the screw is driven into the threaded hole.
4. The locking device as set forth in Claim 1, in which the opposite side walls of said casing have aligned through holes and said wedge member has a pair of projections extending from the opposite sides of the member in the opposite directions and received in said through holes in the opposite side walls.
