Abstract

MECHANIZED JACK STAND

ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE
Conventionally, mechanical ratchet type jacks are detachably mounted on a relatively small square base which makes the jack unstable when used under many circumstances.
This device includes a relatively large base which may be wheel mounted, if desired. A pair of vertical frame members extend upwardly from the base intermediate the ends thereof in spaced and parallel relationship and a top member spans the upper ends of these frame members. A pair of lugs is provided on the base and a corresponding pair of lugs is provided on the top member and a jack member engages bet-ween these lugs and is detachably pinned thereto. The jack operates in the usual manner and the stand gives consider-able stability thus enabling the jack to be used relatively safely under a variety of conditions and for a variety of purposes.

Description

~.~ 594~9 MECHANIZED JACK STAND

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
This invention relates to new and useful improve-ments in stands for jacks, particularly the ratchet type jack which includes an elongated stem having ratchet teeth thereon with a jack frame component engaging over the stem and reciprocal up and down the stem by actuation of a handle.
Such jacks are exemplified by those manufactured and sold under the trade mark JACKALL.
Conventionally, these jacks are provided with a re-latively small detachable base with a hook component extend-ing from the jack component engageable under the item to be lifted. When used on a firm, hard, planar surface, they are relatively safe but such a jack is often used for all types of heavy duty lifting operations including the lifting of all types of heavy industrial equipment, raising cars or trucks for tire changing purposes, straightening frames, stretching fences to mention but a few of such uses.
Under these circumstances, the standard JACKALL
jack can be relatively unstable so that considerable danger exists to the operator under many circumstances.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
The present invention overcomes these disadvantages , ~$94~9 by providing an extremely stable frame to support the jack thus enabling it to be used under a greater variety of con-ditions and circumstances and for a greater variety of pur-poses, in relative safety.
In accordance with the invention there is pro-vided a jack stand for jacks of the type which include an elongated stem with a ratchet rack thereon and a jack com-ponent engaged on said stem with a handle for the actuation of the jack component whereby said component is moved in-crementally up or down the stem; said jack stand compris-ing in combination a stabilizing base, a support frame ex-tending upwardly therefrom and means on said base and also on said support frame spaced above said base for detachably securing the stem of the jack in a substantially vertical position, said means on said base comprising a pair of spac-ed and parallel apertured lugs, said stem also being aper-tured adjacent the lower end thereof and engaging between said lugs by the lower end thereof and a detachable pin ex-tending through the apertures in said lugs and the aper-ture through said stem.
Another advantage of the invention is that the jack stand may, if desired, be mounted on wheels for ease of movement either in adjusting the position of the jack prior to operating same or, under certain circumstances, to assist in the movement of a load supported thereby.
Another advantage of the invention is that the 1~S94;~9 jack can readily be installecl and replacecl from the stand when desired.
A still further advantage of the invention is to provide a device of the character herewithin described which is ~g I

4~9 simple in construction, economical in manufacture and other-wise well suited to the purpose for which it is designed.
With the foregoing in view, and other advantages as will become apparent to those skilled in the art to which this invention relates as this specification proceeds, the invention is herein described by reference to the accompany-ing drawings forming a part hereof, which includes a descrip-tion of the preferred typical embodiment of the principles of the present invention, in which:

DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the jack stand showing the jack stem installed therein.
Figure 2 is a front view of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a top plan view thereof.
In the drawings like characters of reference indi-cate corresponding parts in the different figures.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION
Proceeding therefore to describe the invention in de-tail, the jack stand collectively designatea 10 comprises a stabilizing base collectively designated 11 with a support frame collectively designated 12 extending upwardly there-from with the stem 13 of the jack being supported between the base and the upper end of the stem by means hereinafter to be described.

~59~;~9 In detail, the stabilizing base consists of a pair of spaced and parallel longitudinally extending members 14 preferably manufactured from rectangular cross sectional steel stock.
A support plate component collectively designated 15 is provided and consists of a substantially rectangular steel plate 16 having downturned end portions 17 engaging over the outer surfaces 18 of the longitudinal members 14 and being secured thereto as by welding or the like.
If desired, front and rear vertically situated plates 19 may be secured by the upper edges thereof to the fore and aft edges 20 of the rectangular plate 16 and ex-tend downwardly to box in the plate component 15 for strength purposes.
The support frame collectively designated 12 extends upwardly from this plate component 15 and comprises a pair of spaced and parallel members 21 secured by the lower ends the-reof to the rectangular plate 16 and extending vertically up-wardly therefrom terminating in a transverse member 22 secured to the upper ends of the vertical members 21 as by welding or the like. It is preferable that these members 21 and 22 be of cylindrical stock and they are situated adjacent one trans-verse edge of the plate 16 and adjacent just inboard of the members 14.

~594;~9 Means are provided to detachably secure the lo~er end of the stem 13, to the base plate 16, said means taking the form of a pair of spaced and parallel apertured lugs 23 with a pin 24 extending through these apertured lugs and through an aperture (not illustrated) adjacent the lower end of the stem 13.
A corresponding pair of spaced and parallel lugs 25 extend forwardly from one side of the cross member 22 immediately above lugs 23 and these lugs are also apertured so that a pin 26 may engage through the apertures and through a corresponding aperture (not illustrated) adjacent the up-per end 27 of the stem 13 thus securing the stem firmly in a vertical position substantially centrally of the stabiliz-ing base 11.
The stem 13 is provided with a plurality of spaced and parallel transversely extending ratchet teeth 28 over which the conventional jack component 29 engages having a load bearing member 30 extending forwardly therefrom.
An actuator 31 is provided on the member 29 and a handle 32 engages the rear socket 33 thereof so that reci-procation of the handle in the direction of double headed arrow 34, ratchets the member 29 upwardly or downwardly re-lative to the stem 13 depending upon the position of the selector lever 35, all of which is conventional.

~lSg4~9 When installed within the stabilizing base and stand, the jack is extremely stable and can be used for many purposes under many conditions in relative safety.
Finally, if desired, ground engaging heavy duty wheels 36 can be journalled for rotation adjacent each end of the longitudinal members 14 to facilitate movement of same from one location to another.
Since various modifications can be made in our in-vention as hereinbefore described, and many apparently wide-ly different embodiments of same made within the spirit and scope of the claims without departing from such spirit and scope, it is intended that all matter contained in the ac-companying specification shall be interpreted as illustra-tive only and not in a limiting sense.
