Abstract

"FREESTANDING DOLL TENT"
ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE
The tent is formed with a fabric base, fabric sides and peaked or pyramidal roof all sewn together.
A rigid base panel is inserted within the tent at the base thereof and stretches the base fabric to define the base shape and hold it in position. A wire frame is sewn into the upper ends of the side panels at the junction thereof with the roof panels and defines the shape of the upper ends of the side panels and the lower ends of the roof panels. This is a similar shape but smaller than the shape and dimensions of the base panel. To erect the tent, a central post on a block is inserted into the peak of the roof by one end thereof and the block is centralized on the rigid floor panel thus rigidifying the structure vertically with the base panel and the wire frame stretching material in the lateral plane.

Description

1151!~8tj3 "FREESTANDING DOLL TENT
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION:
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in doll tents, particularly doll tents designed for use with a doll such as the well known "fashion doll" although it of course can be used for other purposes.
These dolls are provided with a variety of outfits to suite a variety of conditions thus enabling them to represent a doll dressed for various activites.
One such activity may be camping or back packing for example and it is desirable, to increase the realism of such dolls, to provide a tent for same.
While it is possible to miniaturize full size camping tents, nevertheless these suffer from several disad-vantages, among which includes a method for erecting and latching same readily and easily yet still providing a tent which, when erected, is freestanding and does not require guy ropes or the like or involved mechanism which may be beyond the capabilities of a child.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION:
The present invention overcomes these disadvantages by providing a tent which is extremely realistic but which contains structure which enables it to be erected and collapsed readily and easily.
In accordance with the invention there is provided i . . . . . .

l~S8~63 a doll's tent comprising in combination a fabric base, fabric sides secured by the lower ends thereof to the ed-ges of the base, and one to another by the sides edges of the fabric sides, and a fabric pyramidal roof secured by the lower edges thereof to the upper edges of the adjacent sides and terminating in a common apex, detachable means to extend and rigidify the fabric base, means to extend and maintain the upper ends of the sides and the lower edges of the roof to rigidify same and means detachably engageable between the center of the means to rigidify the base and the apex of the roof, to maintain the tent in a freestanding erect and rigid condition, said means to extend and rigidify said base including a rigid panel, the configuration and size of which is substantially equal to but not larger than the inner configuration and size of said fabric base, detachably engageable within the tent to be situated upon the fabric and to engage the side walls adjacent the junction thereof with said fabric base.
Another advantage of the invention is to pro-vide a tent which may include one or more sleeping bagsdesigned specifically to fit within the tent, being large enough to take the conventional fashion doll which is nor-mally approximately 11~ inches in length although it is to be understood that size is not a limiting factor.

With the foregoing in view and other advantages as will become apparent to those skilled in the art to which this invention relates as this specification proceeds, the invention is herein described by reference to the accompany-, - " ~ .- : .;

DETAILED DESCRIPTION:
Proceeding therefore to describe the invention in detail, the configuration of the tent collectively designated ~L158863 10, is conventional and it includes a rectangular base 11 made from a cotton fabric or the like, four fabric side panels 12, four substantially triangular roof panels 13 and six detachable supporting structures which will hereinafter be described.
The base 11, sides 12 and rear panels 13 are all made from fabric with the sides being in the shape of truncated pyramids so that the upper horizontal edge 14 is shorter than the lower horizontal edge 15. The lower edges lS are sewn to the edges of the base in a conventional manner and the side edges 16 of the side panels are sewn to adjacent side panel edges once again in a conventional manner.
The roof panels are triangular when viewed in elevation with the lower edges 17 being sewn to adjacent upper edges 14 of the side panels and adjacent side edges 18 of the roof panels being sewn together terminating in a common apex 19 which, when the tent is erected, is substan-tially above the center point of the fabric floor 11.
One side panel specifically designated 12A is provided with substantially rectangular opening 20 with the edges being sewn and a fabric cover flap 21 is secured by the upper edge thereof to the side panel 12A above the upper edge 22 of the door opening 20. When rolled down (not illustrated) this panel covers the door opening but when rolled upwardly as shown in Figure 1, it may be detachably .~

~158863 secured in this position by means of an elastic loop 23, the sewn to/junction between the upper edge 14 and the lower edge 17 of the roof panel and detachably engaging over buttons 24 sewn to the fabric just above the upper edge 22 of the door opening.
The side panel specifically designated 12B is directly opposite the panel 12A and it is provided with a smaller substantially rectangular opening 25 having a piece of fabric netting 26 sewn therein to simulate screening.
Once again the fabric flap 27 may be let down to cover same or may be rolled up and secured by an elastic 28 engaging around a button 29 in a manner similar to the door flap or panel 21.
Means are provided to maintain the junction between the side panels and the roof panels, in the desired substantial-ly square configuration, said means taking the form of a rectangular wire frame 30, each side of which engages through a tubular pocket 31 having an attaching strip 32 which is sewn Lnto the junction between the upper edges 14 of the side panels and the lower edges 17 of the roof panels thus suspending the wire frame as clearly shown in Figure 4. It however will of course be appreciated that although a wire frame is the easiest to manufacture, other materials such as substantially rigid plastic can be used.
Means are also provided to detachably engage , '' ' ' . ' ' ' - ..

~158863 over the fabric or panel 11 and to rigidify the base, said means taking the form of a rigid board 33 made of plywood, synthetic materials such as MASONITE (trade mark) or other similar materials. This may be covered by a fabric 34 having a similar or contrasting pattern to the fabric used in the manufacture of the tent. The dimensions of the panel 33 are similar to but just slightly less than the dimensions of the fabric wall panels at the junction of the floor panel to the lower edges 15 of the side panels.
It is easily engaged through the door opening 20 and rigidifies the base when in position.
Means are also provided to detachably maintain the tent in an erected position and to rigidify the entire structure, said means taking the form of a central post 35 secured by the lower end thereof upon a small block 36, both said block and the post being made from synthetic plastic, wood or the like.
The upper end 37 of the post engages within the apex 19 of the roof through the door opening 20 whereupon the block is slid onto the rigid floor panel or base 33 until it is vertically below the apex thus rigidifying the entire structure and making same freestanding.
It is desirable to reinforce the apex where the upper end 37 of the post 35 engages and in this connection a circular piece of fabric 38 is sewn on the inside of the apex by means of the sewing line 39 clearly shown in ., . : , . . . i~

, ~ , ,. ~. , . . ~ , ~

-7- ~S~863 Figure 7 with the small pocket 40 formed at the center of the circle and the apex of the roof, receiving the other end 37.
It is also desirable to provide one or more small sleeping bags 41 which are substantially conventional in con-struction together with side zipper 42. However the small stuffed pillows 43 are preferably sewn by the lower edge 44 thereof, to adjacent the upper edge 45 of the underside panel of the sleeping bag in order to prevent same from becoming misplaced or detached.
It will therefore be seen that a freestanding col-lapsible and erectable tent is provided with sleeping bags thus enabling a child to use its imagination during play.
Furthermore it can be collapsed and stored flat merely by removing the center support post 35 together with block 36, placing same diagonally across the base of the tent and lower-in8 the wire frame 30 onto the floor with the sides folded inwardly and the roof collapsing into the area defined by the wire frame.
Since various modifications can be made in my inven-tion as hereinabove described, and many apparently widely different embodiments of same made within the spirit and scope of the claims without departing from such spirit and scope, it is intended that all matter contained in the accompanying specification shall be interpreted as illustrative only and not in a limiting sense.
