Abstract
ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE
There is described o file folder combined with spring type clips to hold a stack of sheets inside the folder. The top leaf of the folder is provided with openings through which one jaw of the clips is inserted. Each opening is large enough to clear the inserted jaw and also its operating arm, so that the top leaf may be fully open.

FIELD OF THE INUENTION
The present inuention relates to folders used for contalning and class1fying sheet~ of paper, lndex cards and the like, more Rpecifically to an improved folder of the above type which uses spring type clip8.
~ACKGROUND Of THE INUENTION
Known folders used by students, as well as professional~, for ths orderly arrsngement of paper, include binders, ring binder~, folders using the tongus lock systems and variation~ thereof, etc.
All of these folder~ have retalning means which necessitate at laast one perforation in sach eheet of paper or card which i~ to be placed there~n. Thls constitutes a dieadvantage, since it is neces~ary to perforate all the shests of paper or cards~ and oftsn it le not desirable to have perforated sheets or cards.
.~SJECTS ~F THE INVENTION
Accordingly, lt is a genersl object of the present invention to provide a foldsr adapted to retain a plurality of sheets of paper, or cards, without having recourse to perforations in the latter and which sdvsntageously uses butterfly-type clips.
It 1B another object of the present invention to provide a folder of the abous type, which is of simple snd inexpensive con-struction.
SU~ARY OF T~E INyENTION

DETAILED DESC~IPTION OF THE INUE TION
The invention includes, in combination, a one-piece file folder, made of rigid or slightly flsxible material, such as cardboard, and at least one standard spring type clip, such that the stand~rd spring clip 2 provided with pivotable butterfly-~hsped ope~ating arms 7.
File folder 1 is fo$nsd of two top snd bottom leavss 3 and 4 and an interconnecting spine portion 5 having multiple creases 5', in the known manner. Leaves 3 and 4 open from a closed overlying configuration to an open flat configuratiDn.
Clip 2 is formed with a pair o~ ~aws 6 and a p~ir o~ pivotal arm~ 7 by which the fnrmsr can be open and closed, also in tha known manner. Known spring cllp8 with rigid operating arms could elso be u~ed, although more cumbersome.
According to e first embod$ment of the invention, shown in the top part of Figure 1 and in Figure 4, the material of folder 1 i8 cut once longitudinally and twice tran~veraely in spaced apart relationship in top lssf 3 adjacent to and including spins portion 5, thus ~orminQ en opening 8 and a forwardly-extending tab 8~. A plurality of peper cheete, or csrd~ 9, are placed inside the folder, such th~t their rear edge portions sbut against the spine portion S. It i8 then a simple metter to secure a spring type cllp 2 to the tab ~' and to the bottom leaf with the paper sheets 9 between the leaves 3 and 4.
In a second or elternate embodiment of th- invention, tho tab 8' is completely removed, leaving the rectangular opening or cut-out 8. As shown clearly in the lower part of Figure 1 and in Figures 2, 3, S, and 6, the opening 8 includes the inner portion of top lea~ 3 and all of the spine portion 5. A clip 2 is inserted through opanlng 8, 80 thst top jaw 6a i~ clamped to sheats 9, while the bottom jaw 6b clamps the bottom leaf 4. In both embodiments, opening 8 is wider and deeper than top jaw 6a and its operating arm 7 with the-latter in protruding operating position, 80 as to clear jaw.6a and arm 7 and thug oermit frse closing and opening of the top lesf, while cllp 2 rema$ns ln clamping position.
In both embodiments, it is prefarable that two spaced-apart clips 2 be used.
It will be appreciated that, since the operating arms 7 of clip8 2 are plvotable, they can be placed in ths forward inopcrat~ue 7' to eliminate protrusions at the spine portion 5 and permit classificstion of the folder and of its contents in a filing cabinet, while clips 2 remain attached to the folder and shests. On ths other hsnd, to further reduce the space occuped by the folders in ths filing 115812~
cabinet, clips 2 can be easily and conveniently removed. Obviously, the clips must be removed if they have non-plvotable operating armg.
In order to ensure that clip8 2 do not slide rearwsrdly, it i8 preferable to provide one o~ the three different retaining means illustrated. The first retaining means is shown in Figures 2 and 5 and coneists of a narrow slot 12 formed in the bottom leaf 3. When a clip 2 i8 clsmped lnto position, the leading edge 6~ of the aoso-ciated ~aw 6 18 adaptad to fit into narrow slot 12 and directly contacts outermost sheet 9. The 0econd retaining means is shown in Figure 3, consigting of an embossed portion 13 in lieu of narrow ~lot 12. Embossed portlon 13 protrudes from the out~r sur~ce of bottom leaf 4. The leading edge 6 of the associated ~aw 6, in this case, is adapted to clamp shut lmmedlately forwardly of smbossed portlon 13, whlch then prevents any rearward slipping of clamp 2. The third retaining means is shown in Figure 6, wherein slot ~2 ~8 replaced by 8 slit 14 disposed opposite clip leading ndge 6~.
Retaining means are preferably providad on the back to prevent the clip from slipping off rearwardly.
It will be appreciated that the clip may be removed i~ the folder is to be classifiad with others in a filing cabinet or the like.
