Description

~15~35~3 FIELD OF THE INUENTION
The present inv~ntion relate~ to fastening device~ or locks more specifically to a lock adapted to ~ecure ~liding panels and patio doors.
OACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Verious devices have been proposed in the prior art for securing in a closed position sliding gla9~ door~, or the like 9 commonly cslled pstio doors. The term ~patio door~ as used herein and to which this invention is advantageously directed refers to two overlapping panels, at least onæ of which moves in a plane adjacently parollel to that of the other. Till now previous devices have aa~ured more or less secure locking means but have been designed to fit only a predetermined size of patio door or wlndow. For example, U.S. Patent 3,32~,920 teache~ the use of 8 simple pivotal locking bar for a patio door. This lockins bar i8 not even provided with a lock, nor is it adjustable for vArious frame constructions of patio doors. U.S.
Patent 3,~21,~44 teaches the use o~ an excessively complicated and, hence, expensive sliding bar system deslgned to prevent patio doors from being prysd out of their respectlve guiding channel~. Thls particular invention provides unneeded security, ~ince most lntruders would not take the tlme nseded to accomplish such an operatlon.
OOJECTS OF THE INvENTION
_ .
Accordingly, it i~ a prime object of the present lnvention to provide a lock for patio doors which is adjustable in length to fit variou~ eizes of patio doors.
It i8 anothRr object of the present lnvention to provide a patio door lock which is equally effective against both burglar entry from the out~ids and unauthorized egres~ from the building or house.
It is yet another object of the present invention to provide a patio door lock which provides a visual mesn~ to identify the presence of pla~e glass or other transparent material, ~o that unwitting dangerous colli~ions are avoid3d.
It is gtill another object of the present invention to
- 2 -~35~
provide 3 lock for patio doors which i8 of very simple construction, economical and ea~y to in~tall.

SUM~ARY OF THE IN~ENTIONI
, The above and other object~ and advantages of the present invention are realized according to a preferred embodiment comprising a hollo~ first bar hauing means to be pivotally secured at one of its ends to one door of a pair of ~llding patio doors, the othsr end being open and extending in the direction of the second door panel.
A second bar, of slightly smaller dimensions than the first bsr, is adapted to slide telescopically in the latter and i8 provided at its outer end with a projecting pin. This pin is adapted to lock into a hole made therefor in the vertical frame member of the second patio door.
The first bar is providsd with a locking means consisting of a key-operated lock of a known type adapte d to move a bolt between a retracted position and a locking position wherein the latter extends through a hole made therefor in the first bar and also through a locking hole made in the second bar. This locking hole, as is readily sppreciated, may be easily slid into registry with the hol0 of the first bar by a movlng the second bar forwardly or rearwardly in the latter. The location of the locking hole in the econd bar iB deter-mined in accordance with the size of the patio doors. More than ons locking hole can be provided.
When it is desired to open the patio door~ for e~it or entry therefrom, the lDcking device is released from the frame member of the second door and pivoted about its pivotal end, 80 that it lies parallel to the rear jamb or frame member of the first door.
Catch means are provided on the rear jamb to removably retain the locking device in inoperative unlocked position.
The pivotal end of the first bar is movably secured directly to the door frame siRC6 both dnors sr~ slidable.

FRIFF ~ESCRIPTION OF T~E ~RAWINGS

~535~;~
The above will be more clearly understood by having re~erral to the preferred embodiments of the invention, illu~trated by ~sy of the accompanying drawing~, in which-Figure 1 i8 a front ulevation of the invention installed inan operative lock~d po~ition, also showing the two panels of a patio door system in dashed outline and in closed position;
Figure 2, seen on the second sheet of drawingR ~ i5 a ~econd front elevational view partly broken away and sectioned to show the second bar and the locking bolt of the lock in locked position;
Figure 3, seen on the fir~t sheet or drawings, is a top plan view of the locking devic~ partially sectioned and partly broken away, wherein ths locking device i8 pivDtally attached to one of the sliding panels, also showing in dashed outline the patio doors snd the frame of the door opening in which they are slidably secured;
Figure 4, seen on the second sheet of drawings, i9 a cross-sectional elevation taken along line 4-4 o~ Figure 2;
Figur0 5, seen on the second sheet of drawings, i8 another cross-sectional view taken along line 5-5 o~ Figure 2; and Figure 6 i8 a view taken along llne 6-6 o~ Figure 1 showing in daehed outline the door frame and the rear ~amb of a ~liding door, ~aid rear ~amb pertially shown in cross-section and showing a catch secured thereto;
Like numerals re~er to like elements throughout the drawings.

DETAIL~D OESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
The lDcking device 1 include~ a hollow first bar 2, generally square in cross-section, and a second bar 3, al80 preferably hollow and adapted to slide telescopically within first bar 1.
first bar 2 is provided with a box 4 secured ther~to and hDusing a known type of key-operated lock 5 mounted on its top sur~ace and operated by a removable key 5'. The key 5' activstee a bolt 6 which slides into either a retracted po~ition or an operative locked position. As shown in Figure 2 and 4, it is in opsrative locked position, wherein it extends through a hole made in first bsr 1 and any o~ a plurality of locking holss 7 made in second bar 3.

~535~

These locking hQles 7 may be slid into reglstry with bolt 6 by simply sliding bar 3 in bar 2 by means of a stud handle ~ which is rigidly Fixed to sliding bar 3 and project3 downwardly therefrom for a ~hort di~tance. Handle ~ ~lides in a groove 9, made in the fir~t bar 2. Handle B ig preferably made of two teleacopic portions epring loaded into retracted position ~uch that its outer end, which ia pre~erably provided with a plastic cap G'~ 18 first pulled downwardly, as shown in dotted lines in Figure 2, ~or eaee of manipulation.
The forwsrd end of bar 3 is provided with a forwardly-projecting pin 10. When the locking dsvice 18 in operativa locked posltion,~pin 10 engagee a hole made therefor $n the rear vertical frame member 11 of the sliding patio door 12 ($ndicated in dashed outlines in Figure 3).
Since both doors are adapted to sIide one relative to theother in their respective channels, the rear end of bar 2 is pivotally secured directly to the jamb member 20 of the sliding door 14, ae ehown in Figure 3, by means of a pivotal stud 21.
It will be readily understood that if a person wishes to pas~
through the space de~ined by the patio doors, lock 5 i8 released by key 5~ and the entire locking device is pivoted about pivot stud 21, such that it lies parallel to jamb member 20, as shown in Figure 1, thus allowing either sliding doors 12 or 14 to be Rlid open by their handle.
To ensure that locking dsvice 1 dnes not move when in inoperative position, a catch means i~ provided on jamb member 20, consisting of a horizontal plats 22 provided with a hole 23 adapted to receive the pin 10, ag shown in Fig. 6.
It will be obvious that the above-dsscribed arrangements are very effective as a locking means to prevent patio door~ from being opened by unauthorized persons, whether one or both doors are adapted to slide.
