Abstract

ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE

A universal wrench having at least one open wrench element attached to the end of a handle, or to a device at the end of the handle, designed to clamp the head of a bolt, or the like fastener, to be held, in such a manner that the wrench element is pivotable, in its gripping plane, in relation to the handle, characterized in that the device consists of an attachment having teeth in the form of rounded recesses and similarly rounded projections and of two jaws displaceable in relation to each other, the first of which also has projections and recesses matching the teeth on the attachment and engaging therewith, while the second is adapted to pivot about an axis of rotation mounted in the attachment, and in that recesses are arranged in the insides of the jaws.

Description

~9;~3 The invention ~elates to a universal wrench having at least one open wrench element which is attached to the end o~
a handle, or to a device at the end of handle designed to clamp the head of a bolt to be held, or the like connecting element, in such a manner that the said wrench element is pivotable about an axis of rotation mounted in the said handle and is provided with recesses.
Most known bolt wrenches of this kind have closed and/or open wrench elements. It has been found desirable to provide an open element in addition to a closed element. Where-as there are a few designs of closed wrench elements which may be used Eor several sizes of bolts or nuts, known open elements have only stationary jaws for one size, or do not have auto-matically adjustable jaws.
It is therefore the purpose of the invention to provide a universal wrench in which the open wrench element has jaws, with recesses, which are automatically adjustable in relation to each other and can thus hold bolt heads o~ various sizes and shapes.
According to the invention, this purpose may be achieved in that the device consists of an attachment having teeth in the form of rounded recesses and similarly rounded projections, and of two jaws displaceable in relation to each other, the first of which also has projections and recesses matching the teeth in the said attac~nent and engaging therewi-th, while the second jaw is adapted to pivot about an axis of ro-tation mounted in the said attachment, and in that recesses are arxanged on the insides of the said jaws.
In this connection, it has been found particularly advantageous for the teeth of -the attachment to have a large central recess, with two projections arranged laterally thereof, the said teeth being arranged upon an arc of which the centre coincides with the axis of rotation of the wrench element.
Depending upon the position to which-the open wrench element is pivoted, the engaging teeth displace the jaws of the wrench, thus altering the distance therebetween, and allow-ing the wrench to accept bolt heads, nuts, or the like of differ-ent sizes. It is also easier to apply this wrench, since the jaws may be opened wider than necessary and may then be brought to a snug fit on the bolt head or the like.
The usefulness of a wrench of this kind may b`e still further increased by connecting the attachment to the end of the handle by means of an axis located in the gripping plane of the wrench, thus allowing the said attachment to fold at right angles to the gripping plane.
It has also been found desirable to provide the in-sides of the jaws with recesses and edges, to facilitate the holding and securing of circular of unusually shaped bolts, nuts, or the like.
A further advantage may be obtained if the jaw, through which the attachment passes, is provided with teeth with which a resiliently mounted pin engages, this allows the jaws to be held more satisfactorily in the selected position, thus ensuring improved application to, and holding of, the bolts, nuts, or the like.
In accordance with one aspect of the present invention, there is provided a universal wrench for turning components, comprising, a handle having an end portion, two substantially mutually parallel jaw members; means for pivotably connecting said two jaw members with said end portion of said handle, said means for pivotably connecting said two jaw members with said end portion of said handle comprises a pivot shaft attached to said handle, one of said jaw members ~eing pivotably mounted at said pivot shaft, said pivot shaft extending per-o~

pendicular to a plane taken through both of said jaw members, said one jaw member being provided with guide means extending at right angles to said one jaw member; the other jaw member being provided with a rack having rack teeth, said rack being connected essentially at right angles with said other jaw member, said rack teeth being directed towards said handle;
said rack being mounted to be lengthwise displaeeably guided within said guide means; said end portion of said handle being provided with teeth meshing with said rack teeth of said rack, and said teeth o~ said handle be arranged along an arc whose centre is formed by said pivot shaft.
The drawings illustrate an example of embodiment of a universal wrench according to the invention, having a wrench element at the end of a handle. Thus, the invention is illus-trated by way of example in the accompanying drawings wherein:- --- Figure 1 is a plan view of a wrench in accordance with the present invention, and Figure 2 is a sectional view of the wrench taken along line 2-2 in Fig. 1.
Describing now the drawings, the wrench 2 will be seen to comprise a handle or handgrip 1, wherein in the draw-ings only the front handle part has been illustrated. The front end of the handle 1 is provided with a set of teeth or tooth arrangement 14. The longitudinal central line of the handle or handgrip 1 extends through the central or interme diate tooth of the set of teeth 14, this intermediate tooth being formed by the tooth grooves or bases 17, 18, 19 and similarly rounded projections 20, 21 The teeth 14 are arranged upon an arc or circle whose centre is formed by a centre line of a pivot shaft 5 which is attached to the handle 1. The said wrench element also comprises two jaws 15, 16 which are displaceable in relation to each other with-out the aid of any springs. First jaw 15 carries, in a slid-ing part 30 guided in jaw 16, projeetions 22, 23, 24, 25 and recesses 26, 27, 28. These projeetions and recesses are arranged in a straight line and are adapted to attachment 14 with which they engage. Second jaw 16 rotates about axis 5 on the wrench element and has an internal conical guide 29 -3a-''''' ~92~3 for first jaw 15. A preferred tooth design for attachment 14 has a central recess 1~ defined laterally by projections 20, 21. The two sets of teeth allow the jaws to move automatic-ally in relation to each other, and to the said attachment, according to the position to which the wrench element is pivoted, to produce different jaw openings. The jaws prefer-ably have recesses 15',16' with edges 15",16", and serrations 15"',16"', thus making it easier to hold circular fasteners and preventing the wrench from slipping.
Jaw 16 has teeth 31,31' engaging with a pin 33 mounted in a sleeve 34, o~ resilient material, mounted in attachment 14. Different pivotal movements of the members 15 and 16 relative to the handle 1 are insured for since the pin member 33 engages with the legs or leg teeth 31 and 31'.
During the handling of the wrench a rocking of the handle 1 towards the right causes a displacement of the jaw members 15 and 16 in the sense o~ opening the wrench. There fore, the wrench can be mounted UpOIl the most different size components to be turned, such as bo:Lt heads, nut members or the like, and such wrench mounting is facilitated in that the play between the jaw members 15 and 16 and the components which are to be engaged can be enlarged simply by rocking or pivoting the handle 1. If now the handle 1 is pivoted in the opposite direction towards the left, then the jaw members 15 and 16 clampingly engage with the component which is to be acted upon.
While there are shown and described present preferr-ed embodiments of the invention, it is to be distinctly under-stood that the invention is not limited thereto, but may be otherwise variously embodied and practiced within the scope of the following claims.

The invention is not restricted to the universal 2C~;3 wrench illustrated. The adjustable jaw wrench may also be articulated to the handle, and one handle may be fitted with more than one wrench element. Finally, the wrench element, with attachment 14, may be in the form of a unit interchange-able with other suitable universal wrenches.
