Abstract

COMPACT CLOTHES HANGER SUPPORT BRACKET
FOR TRAVEL TRAILERS AND MOTOR HOMES
Abstract of The Disclosure A clothes hanger support bracket for a vehicle comprising a vertical plate mounted on a vertical or horizontal beam such as a wall stud or ceiling joist. Holes for fastening screws are located along the back or top edge or in a flange along the top or back edge. A plurality of elongated slots are formed through the plate behind the front edge and extend along a line inclined downwardly and backwardly at an angle of 15 to 30° from the vertical.
Further, each slot is formed with a closed or continuous perimeter, that is, without a top or side opening. The elongated shape of the slots facilitates inserting and removing clothes hanger hooks, and the angled configuration and continuous, closed perimeters of the slots securely retain clothes hanger hooks when the vehicle is in motion.
Alternatively, the clothes hanger support bracket may be used in small home closets where space is at a premium.

Description

~14S718 Background of The Invention This invention relates generally to clothes hanger supports. More specifically it relates to a bracket for holding a plurality of clothes hangers in a vehicle.
It is well known to those skilled in this particular field that horizontal clothes rods, commonly used in home and office clothes closets, are unsatisfactory when used in clothes storage compartments in travel trailers and motor homes.
Further, braekets utilizing a plurality of forwardly or upwardly open recesses are well known, as shown in Hutchinson U.S. Patent No. 110,239, Heysinger U.S. Patent No.
183,261, Reynolds U.S. ~atent No. 1,301,500, Grady U.S. Patent No. 1,852,514 and Levy U.S. Patent No. 2,766,958. Normal jostling of the vehicle in motion bounces the clothes off the horizontal rods, or out of the open slots, and they are jumbled in a pile on the floor at the end of the trip. This situation aeeordingly is in need of improvement.

Summary of The Invention Therefore, a principal objeet of the present invention is to provide a elothes hanger support braeket for a vehiele which will securely hold clothes on a plurality of clothes hangers while the vehiele is in motion.
Another objeet is to provide a clothes hanger bracket which can readily be mounted on the front or side , S'7~8 surfaces of vertical wall studs or horizon-tal ceiling joists commonly found in the clothes storage compartments of travel trailers and motor homes and in small home closets where space is at a premium.
Those objects are attained by a compact clothes hanger support bracket for a vehicle such as a travel trailer or motor home which comprises in combination a vertical plate with opposed front and back edges and opposed top and bottom edges, base means along one edge for fastening the plate on a supporting member in a vertical position, a plurality of clothes-hanger-hook-receiving slots each elongated along an individual axis and formed in the plate behind the front edge with their individuaI axes aligned and extending along a line inclined downwardly and backwardly toward the back edge in a range of 15 - 30 with respect to a vertical line, with each of the slots being elongated along the line to facilitate insertion and removal of clothes hanger hooks, and with each of the slots being formed in -the plate with a continuous perimeter, and without top or front openings to retain a clothes hanger hook therein during jostling of the vehicle when in motion.
Further objects of the invention will appear as il45718 the description proceeds.
To accomplish the above ànd related objects, this invention may be embodied in the forms illustrated in the accompanying drawings, attention being called to the fact, however, that the drawinys are illustrative only, and that changes may be made in the specific construction illustrated and described within the scope of the appended claims.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.
Brief Description of The Drawing The figures of the drawings are briefly described as follows:
Figure 1 is a side view of a clothes hanger support bracket illustrating one form of the present inventlon;
Fig. 2 is a top view of Fig. l;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the bracket installed on the front surface of a wall stud and supporting a plurality of clothes hangers;
Fig. 4 is a top view similar to Fig. 2 of an alternate embodiment;
Fig. 5 is a top view of a third alternate embodiment;
Fig. 6 i5 a perspective view of a fourth alternate embodiment which is shown supported on a side surface of a ; vertical member such as a wall stud; and Fig. 7 is a side view similar to Fig. 1 of a fifth alternate embodiment supported on a horizontal member such as a ceiling joist.

~145718 Like parts are designated by like reference characters throughout the figures.
Detailed Description of The Preferred ~mbodiments Referring now to the drawings in greater detail, the clothes hanger support bracket 20, illustrated in Figs.
1, 2 and 3, comprises a flat plate 22 with opposed front,and back edges 24 and 26 respectlvely and top and bottom edges 23 and 25 respectively. At the back edge, there is a transverse vertical flange 28, extending to the right. It has holes 30 through which screws 32 fasten the bracket to the front face 34 of a wall stud 36.
The front edge 24 is inclined downwardly and backwardly toward the back edge. Such inclination of the front edge is not necessary however to practice the invention, althou~h some inclination is preferred to provide proper clearance for'clothes hangers. A plurality of clothes-hanger-hook-receiving slots 38 are formed in the plate adjacent and just behind the front edge 24. Each slot is elongated along a line X-X (Fig. 1) which is inclined at an angle of approximately 20 from the vertical. In the present instance, the front edge is parallel to line X-X but this is not essential to the invention.
As shown in Fig. 3, a plurality of clothes hangers 40 are supported b~ their hooks 42 from the slots 38. It is important to note that, because the slots 38 have closed or continuous peripheries, they have no open sides or open tops through which the hooks 42 might bounce out during normal in-motion jostling of the vehicle. The elongated shape of the slots 38 enables a person to insert the hooks 42 by first 11457i8 tilting the hangers slightly backward, out of their gravity-ind~lced vertical positions, until the hooks themselves are inclined at 20, approximately parallel to the 20 angles o the slots. At this time, the hooks will slide easily into the slots.
As soon as they are released, the hooks and clothes (not shown) supported on them swing forward and hang vertically, and are thus locked against movement out of the slots until someone tilts the hooks back again at a 20 angle parallel tG the slots.
While I have found that the angle of 20 ~or the slots 38 and 38a works well and clothes hangers do not fall off even under the most severe jostling movement, I believe that most of the advantages experienced with the 20 angle can be obtained in a range oE 15-30. mhis range of angles provides enough spacing between garments to avoid undesirable crowding oE the clothes but still allows them to be sufficiently in contact with one another that each tends to restrain its neighbor from movement.
While the front edge 24 is inclined at the same angle as the line~ X-X, it may be disposed at any other suitable angle or may even be vertical if desired.
In the embodiment of Figs. 1-3, the flange 28 is t~rned to the right. For better access to the screws 32 in certain locations, the flange may be turned to the left as indicated by 28a in Fig. 4. Otherwise, the embodiments of Figs. 2 and 4 are identical~
In the embodiment shown in Fig. 5, the plate 44 is similar to the plate 22 shown in side view in Fig. 1.
3~

~145718 .

However, the top view shown in Fig. 5 is T-shaped, with a base flange 46 fastened across both sides of plate ~4, as by welding or melting at 48.
The embodiment of Fig. 6 has a front edge 24a and slots 38a which are identical to the parts 24 and 38 previously described. It~is simply a flat plate 50 with no transverse base flange similar to elements 28, 28a or 46.
It is side~mounted by screws 52, and can readily be attached with the front edge 24a in any selected part of the 15-30"
angle range indicated on Fig. 6.
The embodiment of Fig. 7 is identical to that shown in Fig. 1 except that its flange 27 is along the top edge. It is mounted by screws 54 to the bottom of a horizontal support beam 56 which may be a ceilin~ joist.
The slots 38b are similar to those designated 38~ They are behind front edge 24b and extend along a line X-X which is also inclined at 20 relative to a vertical line. If desired, the Fig. 7 embodiment may be formed with a flange 28b shown in broken lines along the back edge 26b so it may optionally be fastened to a wall stud or ceiling joist.
While certain novel features of this invention have been shown and described and are pointed out in the annexed claims, it will be understood that various omissions, substitutions and changes in the forms and details of the device illustrated and its operation can be made by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit of the invention. For example, while the bracket has been tested in metal form, it may be manufactured in any other suitable material such as wood or plastics.
