Abstract
ABSTRACT
It is common knowledge that most books while being read tend to close by themselves if (A) they are not kept open by hand, or (B) some sort of weight is not used to keep them open or (C) some special device is not used.
This invention relieves the reader of having to use either of the first two methods. It relates to a new device for keeping a book open.

Description
SPE CATION
This invention relates to a device used for keeping a book open at a desired page.
~11 the various designs of book openers which have been patented to date have one or more of the following drawbacks:
(a) Letters or lines on a page blocked by a part of the device, (b) Will not work properly near the beginning or end of the book, (c) Will not work with all sizes of books, (d) Will not work equally well with paper back and hard cover books, (e) Cannot be conveniently carried in a pocket, (d) Is of multi-piece construction, (e) ~oes not have sufficient clamping effect to stay in place, (f) Is cumbersome to use.
Our invention is a significant improvement on existing designs in that:
(a) The device is of one piece construction, (b) It is very easy to use, (c) Being made of transparent material does not block any printed matter, (d) It can be conveniently carried in a pocket, (e) Works equally well with all sizes and types of books, ... 2 1~4ZOS
(f) It has a clamping e~Fect on pages oF ~aook and once placed in position will stay there, (g) It need be clipped to only one side rather than both sides of a book, (h) It has universal appeal.
The object of our invention is to free the hands of a person reading a book and keep the book open at a particular page. With the new device holc'ing the pages, the book can be laid on a flat surface, such as a table, without fear of its closing, so that a person could take notes while reading or prepare meals while using recipe books or enjoy a meal while reading. Another object of the invention is to provide means whereby the two jaws of the device could be used to hold pages from the side of the book and the arm of the device used to mark the page.
The aforementioned objects and more will become apparent by the construction described herein after and illustrated by the accompanying drawings.
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the device Fig. 2 is a plan view of the device Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the device The device is constructed of transparent plastic material shaped in a '~', one limb of the '~' being shorter than the other limb, as shown in Fig. 2.
The gap between the two limbs near their union is more than that near the top end of the smaller limb. As shown in Fig 3. this feature of construction gives a clamping effect on the pages of a book.
The smaller limb of the '~' shaped part extends into a lateral arm coming out at a distance of ~" from the junction of two limbs of the '~'. At the point of exit from the smaller limb of '~' this arm is of 1" width. The arm is 3~" long. The edge of the arm towards the '~' bend tapers so that the width of the lateral arm at its extremity is 5/c~' as shown in Fig. 2. The dimensions given here and on the drawings, are given only for a better understanding of the device.
Fig. 4 shows the two ways the invention is used to hold the book open at a desired page. A plurality of pages is inserted from the top side of the book into the two limbs of the '~' shaped part so that the pages are held tightly. Now the lateral arm is slippec' on to the facing page - as shown in the top of Fig. 4. When the maiority cf pages of the open book are on the left hand side, the device may be used at the lower end of the book in a manner reverse to as described before. This is shown in lower part of Fig. 4.
The device may also be used as a bookmarl. by inserting pages from the side of a book and then using the arm to mark the page.
