Description
:~:L3~
This invention relates to a hanger for bags.
The invention comprises : a lonc3itudinally extending base for mounting in an approximately horizontal attitude; a pair of arms designed with said base to be swingably connected to said bas~ adjacent opposite ends oE
the latter, to swing relative thereto about an appro~imately vertical axis when said base is in such horizontal attitude;
said arms being designad so that aach arm may swing about said swinga~le connection between an extended position transverse to said base and a retracted position alongside said base; means on each arm Eor the connection to and the support o one side of a bag, whereby a bag may be supported betwean said two arms in their extended position by said last mentioned connection to each arm.
The invention thus provides a pair of arms which, in their extended position will extend in spaced relation-ship to support a bag between them, in the open position of the bag~ When the arms, with the bag attached b~ its opposlte sides, are swung to retracted position, beside the base, the bag top is gathered and almost closed. The arms may also be folded to retracted position when the holder is not in use.
The most common application oE the invention is thought to be for supporting a garbage bag in a kitchen.
In a preferred embodiment, means are provided to inhibit the movement of the arms from their open, or extended position toward closed, or retracted position or to inhibit movement out of either their extanded or their retracted positions. Such inhibiting means resist movement of the arms from one or both these positions toward the other. They are designed, however, to allow such resistance to be overcome to allow manual movement of each arm to the other position. The advantage of such inhibiting means is that, in relation to the open position of the arms, the bag will not close of its own accord during filling or between fillings. In relation to the closed position oE the arms, the inhibiting means prevents o;pening of the arms when the arms, or a bag thereon, are not in use.
In drawings which ilLustrate a preferred embodiment of the invention :
Figure l shows the invention arranged to support a bag in the open position, Figure 2 shows the invention arranged to support a bag in the closed position, Figures 3 and 4 show the preferred design of the arm hinging; showing the movement inhibiting means, and;
Figures 5 and 6 show the operation of the movement inhibiting means.
In the drawings :
A base lO extends longitudinally in direction D
to be mounted with such direction extending horizontally on a room or cupboard wall, or the like. Mounting holes, 12 for screws are provided in such base. Adjacent each end of the base is provided swingable mounting means for an arm 14 to swing relative to the base lO, to swing about an axis which is approximately vertical when the direc-tion D is appro~imatelv horizontal.
In the pre:Eerred embodlment of the invention, the swingable mountiny means, as shown in Figures 3-6 at each end of the base, comprises a pair of hinge brackets 16 defining vertical sockets 18 for hinge pins 20 on the arms.
As shown each arm comprises a longitudinally extending body designed to extend horizontally when assembled to the base and defining at one end a pair of downwardly extending hinge pins 20 designed and spaced to drop into sockets 18 to support the arm in swinging relationship to the base. As indicated, a space 20 is provided below a hinge pin to allow the pins 20 to be moved into positio~
over sockets 18 for assembly thereto.
The upper surface o:E the arm 14 is provided wi-th means for attachment thereto of one side of a bag. Thus the attached means will be suited to the type of bag to be supported. The most common type of bag :Eor use with the invention is thought to be a bag of plastic film having on each side, handles defined by longitudinally, horzintally extending, cut-outs. Thus each arm 14 in the preferred embodiment is provided with a pair of spaced, downwardly and inwardly extending slots 22 -to receive the gathered bag material on each side of the bag cut-out. The slots 22, preferably, and as shown, taper downwardly and inwardly since such orientation is believed to ~est transfer the stresses from the bag to the arm.
As shown the swingable mounting comprising the sockets 18 and the pins 20 allows each arm 14 to swing f~3~5~L
between an extending position e~tending, approximately horizontally, and transverse to the base 10 (as shown in Figure 1), and a retracted position where the arms 14 rest beside each other and the base 10, (as shown in Figure 2).
As previously stated, it is advantageous to have means inhibiting (but not preventing) movement of the arms 14 out of their extended (Figure 1) position and/or of their retracted (Figure 2) position. Suc'n inhibiting means, may be provided in a number of ways. As shown in Figures 4 to 6 a preEerred means is providing by an increased radius portion 24 material about the one or both pins 20, so that there is light frictional contact between such increased radius material and an abutment 26 on the base du.ring move-ment from an attitude of an arm 14 from an attitude adjacent the extended position to an attitude adjacent the retracted position. Thus when the arms 14 are located in either limiting position any tendency to swing toward the other position is resisted by the frictional interference of members 24 and 26. On the other hand, when it is desired to swing the arms 14 from one position to the other, manual pressure on the arm 14 easily overcomes such frictional resistance and allows the desired movement.
Although the members 24 and 26 are shown for only one arm in E`igures 3-6 it will be understood that they are provided for the other arm also.
In the preferred embodiment of the invention the entire base memb~r including the socket mountings is made of molded plastic. Similarly each of the arm members including 3;~
the hinge pins is preferably made from molded plastic.
In oparation, as best shown in Figures l & 2, the bag handle forming material wall on each side of the bag is gathered into notches 22 so that the bag is suspended on opposite sides by the opposite arms 14. When the arms are swung to open position the parts are as shown in Figure l, the bag is open at the top and the inhibiting means 24 and 26 for each arm, will resist accidental closure with the bag empty or partially filled, and resist closure due to stresses, by material in the bag. When the arms 14 are manually swung to closed position they effect a closure o:E the top of the bag to a substantial extent and prevent accidental entry oE materials (or insects) to -the bag. The inhibiting means 24, 26 will resist accidental opening oE
the bag.
