Description

113509~) The present invention relates to an improvement of a fastening device having toothed engaging surfaces and more parti-cularly to an improvement of a fastening device including bolts, nuts, and the like having lower engaging surface projections with teeth constructed and arranged to afford material resistance to loosening of the fastening device after being brought into pres-sure engagement with an adjacent surface of a work piece by the tightening of the fastening device.
An object of the present invention is to provide an improved fastening device such as nut or bolt head-having a toothed engaging surface to effect the requirement of release torque value to loosen the fastening device which extremely ex-ceeds the application torque require~ for tightening it.
Another object of the present invention is to provide an improved engaging surface of a threaded fastening device having ratchet-like projections in the form of double-edged sword, whereby when the fastening device is turned in a loosening direc-tion an adjacent work piece surface is cut by the projections and engaged with the latter without abrasion or injury of the points of the projections, thereby obtaining locking action of the fastening device.
It is another object of the present invention to pro-vide an integrally formed threaded fastening device having en-gaging surface provided with a number of ratchet-like projec-tion wherein projections positioned on an outer portion ofan engaging surface have construction so as to bear against , 11350S~0 torque load more than inside-positioned projections, whereby all projections on the engaging surface are capable of engaging on average with an adjacent work piece when the fastening device is rotated in a loosening direction.
Still another object of the present invention is to provide an unique construction of the toothed engaging surface of a fastening device providing higher release torque to appli-cation torque ratio characteristics than generally known lock nut or bolt having engaging projections.
- In one aspect of the present invention, there is pro-vided a fastening device comprising: a body having an engaging surface and threads concentric with the axis thereof; a plurality of ratchet-like projections formed on the engaging surface in the form of a sawtooth in cross section: each of said projection hav-ing a first side edge and a second side edge with a leading point which forms high end of the projections; said points being faced to the opposite direction in relation to the direction of tighten-ing of the fastening device; each of said first edges being lain on an appropriate first tangent line extended tangentially with respect the axis of the device and each of said second edges be-ing lain on an appropriate second tangent line which is crossed to the first line; said first lines and second lines being formed at regular interval and such interval being so arranged that a plurality of intersecting points of the first and second lines are formed between an outer edge and an inner edge of the engag-ing end surface thereby forming a plurality of the leading point between~the outer and inner edge of the engaging surface.
The other objects and advantages of the present inven-tion will become apparent from the following detailed descrip-tion illustrating the invention by way of example, with refer-ence to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a side view showing the adaption of an em-bodiment of this invention to a flanged nut, Fig. 2 is an end view of the flanged nut illustrated in Fig. l;
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary enlarged end view of the flanged nut;
-2-Fig. 4 is a fragmentary end view showing one projection;
Fig~ 5 is a fragmentary sectional view taken along the line 5-5 in Fig. 3;
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary enlarged end view of another embodiment; and Fig. 7, 8 and 9 are respectively side view of other embodiments of the present invention wherein Fig. 7 is adapted for a standard nut, Fig. 8 being adapted for a bolt having a flanged head and Fig. g being adapted for a standard bolt hav-; 10 ing a head.
Referring to the drawing more in detail wherein I have -2a-employed like characteristics to denote similar parts in the various figures it will be seen that one embodiment of the pre-sent invention contemplates a threaded flange nut designated by the numeral 10.
The nut 10 is provided with a body 11 having an annular flange 12 formed at lower portion of the body, a threaded bore 13 extending through the axis of the body and an engaging end sur-face 14 having a number of ratchet-like projections 15.
Each of said projections has a first side edge 17 and a second side edge 18 defined by a leading point 19 which is formed at high end of the projection.
Each of said first edges 17 is lain on an appropriate first tangent line 22 extended tangentially with respect the axis of the nut, and each of said second edges 18 being lain on an appropriate second tangent line 23 which is crossed to the first tangent line 22.
The first lines 22 and the second lines 23 are formed on the engaging surface 14 at regular interval, and both lines being crossed in approximately light angular relationship at an imaginary circle line 16 which is located on center position between an outer edge 24 and an inner edge 25 of the engaging surface 14. Said interval of the tangent lines are so arranged that a plurality of, preferably two to five points 19 are formed between the outer and the inner edges 24, 25 of the engaging surface. In Figs. 2 and 3, the number of said points between the outer edge and the inner edge is two, and in Fig. 6, the number is four.

Preferably, slowly inclined surfaces 26 and suddenly inclined surfaces 27 of the projections are intersected in sub-stantially right angular relationship as shown in Fig. 5.
In operation, it will be understood that the arcuate angle points 19 of the projection on the engaging surface 14 serve as a spearheads when the nut is turned in a clockwise direc-tion, that is, loosening direction as shown at numeral 21 in Fig. 2, thereby cutting into the surface on an adjacent work piece. In this case, the points easily bite into the adjacent work piece by effect of double-edged sword of the projections formed of the leading points 19 with the first and the second edges 17, 18, thereby preventing abrasion of injury of the pointed projections.
In addition, each of said projections is compressed from the both sides 17, 18 by outer cut material and inner cut material of the work piece so as to cause a wedge effect of the projections, thereby increasing locking action of the nut.
Furthermore, it will be understood that the projections positioned outer portion of the engaging surface 14 have long side edges 17 and, 18 and points with large angle as compared with the inside-positioned projections because the first and -~
second tangent lines are tangentially extended with respect the axis of the nut and crossed each other. In generally, the co-efficient of friction of outer portion on the engaging end sur-face 14 is larger than that of inner portion on the engaging surface, so that the large torque load may be applied to the outer portion than the inner portion of the engaging surface. If, all projections are uniformly formed, outside-positioned , . ~ .

, 1135()90 projection will be worn away earlier than the inside-positioned projection. In the present invention, the form of the outside-positioned projections are larger than that of the inside-positioned projection whereby all projection on the engaging end surface 14 may be engaged on average with the adjacent work piece when the fastening device is rotated in a loosening direc-tion, thus obtaining effective and high locking action of the fastening device.
Referring to the Fig. 7, the present invention is applied to a standard nut 10~ in which projections 15A having same construction of the projection 15 in the first embodiment is provided to give the same locking action as in the case of the first embodiment.
Figs. 8 and 9 also illustrate other embodiments of the present invention in which projections 15B similar to the aforementioned projections in the first embodiment are formed on the lower surface of a flange head 28 of a bolt 29 in Fig. 8, and projections 15C similar to the projections 15 being adapted to a standard headed bolt 30 in Fig. 9. It will be understood that the bolts illustrated in Figs. 8 and 9 also may be applied the same locking action as in the case of the aforementioned first embodiment.
Changes and modifications will occur to those skilled in the art, and the foregoing is not intended to limit the scope of the present invention, which is defined by the follow-ing claims.
