FIELD OF THE INVENTION
m is inven-tion relates to a three tier stacking container.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Open stacking con-tainers are used by bakeries for trans-porting their products. When the containers are full they must be able to be stacked one on top of another while not damaging the contents. It is also desirable, for space saving reasons, to be able to stack the containers when they are only partially filled, and when ~they are empty, to decrease the space they occupy. To achieve this, containers have been devised using pivotable bail bars, for instance as disclosed in United States Paten-t No. 3,951,265 issued April 20, 1976 in the name of James C. Carroll. Such containers, however, are difficult to assemble.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an improved three tier stacking tray having a bail bar which is bo-th slidable and pivotable on a pair o* pi wt pins for movement into three different stacking positions.
SUMMARY OF THE I~NTION
Essen-tially the invention consists of a three tier stacking container comprising a body having opposed side walls, opposed end walls, and a bottom; a pair of bail bars pivotally mounted on the end walls and oriented parallel to the side walls, and a transverse arm at each end of each of the bail bars, each arm being longitudinally slo-tted; axially aligned pairs of pin members 37~
fixed to the end walls and engaging the slotted arms of the bail bars whereby the bail bars are pivotable thereon and also slidable laterally -there-to; the upper edges of the side walls and the end walls being configured whereby each bail bar is movable to a position of rest thereon in any one of -three positions allowing a second container of the same configuration to (1) rest on the bail bars of -the container wholly above the container, (2) nest in the container, and (3) rest on the bail bars of the container intermediate positions (1) and (2).
DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
An example embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings in which:

m e example embodiment shown in the drawings consists of a container 10 having a pair of opposed planar side walls 12, a pair of opposed planar end walls 14 and a flat bottom 16 to give the container a rectilinear configuration. Side walls 12 slope upwardly and outwardly and ter~inate in flat upper edge 18. End walls 14 are centrally recessed to have an upper edge with flat end portions 20 in the plane of upper edges 18 of side walls 12 and a ~-shaped central portion wi-th upwardly sloping sides 22. Side walls 12 and end walls 14 are stepped inwardly below their upper edges 18 and 20 to form a shoulder 23.
A pair of bail bars 24 are pivo-tally mounted on container 10, one bar adjacent each side wall 21 and parallel thereto. Each bail bar 24 has a transverse arm 26 a-t each end of the bar and each arm has a longitudinally slot 28 adjacent its free end. An a~ially aligned pair of pins 30, one projecting outwardly from each end wall 14 above shoulder 23, engage slots 28 of the transverse arms 26 of each bail bar 2~ whereby the bail bars are pivotable in an arc about the pins as indicated by arrows 32 in Figure 1.
To aid in locating bail bars 24 in certain p~eter~ined positions, opposed flat end portions 20 of the upper edges of end walls 14 carry a first pair of aligned troughs 34 and sloping sides 22 carry a second pair of aligned troughs 36, one pair of first and second troughs to receive each bail bar 24. Also the upper edge 18 of each side wall 12 carries a spaced pair of troughs 38 to receive bail bar 24.
Bottom 16 of container 10 carries on its underside an o uter groove 40 adjacent, and parallel to, each side wall 12 and inner groove 42 adjacent, and parallel to, each outer groove. Each groove :' ~
3~3 40 and 42 e~tends the length of bottom 16 and is also parallel to bail bars 24.
Pin 30 shown in de-tail in Figure 2 of -the drawings is mounted in a boss 43 on end wall 14. Pin 30 is self-locking and consists of a head 44 and a shank 46 with a barbed end por-tion 48 which engages the inner side of boss 43.
In an alterante embodiment shown in Figure 3 a pin 50 has a head 52 and a shank comprising a plurality of annularly dis-posed prongs 54 carrying barbs 56. End wall 14 carries a boss 58 having a plurality of apertures 59 disposed annularly around a hub 60 and arranged to receive prongs 54 with barbs 56 gripping the inside surface of the boss as seen in Figure 4.
In the further alterante embodiment shown in Figure 5 a boss 70 integral with end wall 14 receives a flanged cap 72 which is press-fitted onto free end 74 of -the boss. Alternatively the free end of boss 70 may be domed to form a rivet 76 retaining a washer 78.
In use7 when containers 10 are filled they may be stacked on top of another as seen in Figure 6 whereby bottom 16 of an upper container lOA lies substantially in the plane of the top of a lower container lOB. To achieve this stacking position, each bail bar 24 of container lOB is pivoted about pins 30 to a position above troughs 34 and the bar is then dropped into the trough by sliding arms 26 longi-tudinally on the pivot pins. Container lOA is then placed on container lOB, registering bail bars 24 of container lOB in outer grooves 40 in bottom 16 of container lOA, which supports the upper con-tainer wholly above the lower container.
~ hen lower container lOB is only partially filled -then upper container lOA may be stacked on i-t in an intermediate position as seen in Figure 7. Ihis intermedia-te stacking position is achieved hy pulling ~.~28~37~
each bail bar 24 of container lOB upwardly, thus sliding arns 26 on pins 30, and then rotating -the bar about -the pins and dropping -the bar into troughs 36. Container lOA is -then placed in container lOB with bail bars 24 of container lOB registering in inner grooves 42 in bottom 1 6 of con-tainer lOA.
When lower container lOB is empty, upper container lOA
may be nested in it as seen in Figure 8. To achieve this, each bail bar 24 of lower container lOB is pivoted about pins 30, and arms 26 are slid on the pins, to register the bail bar in -troughs 38 of adjacent side wall 12. With bail bars 24 thus moved aside, container 12A may be dropped into container 12B with shoulder 23 of the upper container resting on troughs 38 of side walls 12 of the lower container.
It will be appreciated that troughs 34~ 36 and 38 are used for registering bail bars 34 in appropriate positions and any detent means suitable for the purpose could be employed. Troughs 36 and 38 are not essential since the location of bail bars 24 in these posi-tions could be determined by the length of slot 28.
