Abstract

WOOD JOINT CUTTER
ABSTRACT
A rotary tool adapted for use as an attachment for a router portable, stat-ionary or like machinery, for the main purpose of making tongue and groove joints in boards or plywood. In this invention the cutting devices are of such a size and proportion, that it produces a pair of wood joint compon-ents which are identical and fit together to produce a complementary joint, contrary to the normal tongue and groove joint, which has a tongue on one portion and a groove on another portion requiring two separate cutters.

WOOD JOINT CUTTER
BACKGROUND OF THE I NVENT I QN
The primary object in the creation of this invention has been to produce a tool, which would make it possible for most everyone - skilled or unskilled, working in the art of woodwork, to do wood joining in a professional, still very uncomplicated way. Its simplicity and neatness will generate great appeal, particularly for the home work shop.
SPECIFICATION
This invention relates to a power operable tool designed mainly for making tongue and groove corner joints in drawers, cabinets and the like and also for making tongue and groove joints in pieces of wood for the purpose of assembling these to a wider component. This invention will make a uniform tongue and groove in the inner part of the joint and with the extreme outer tongue to one side, plus the extreme outer groove to the other side being equal - one inner part plus one outer part determines thickness of wood, said tongues and grooves becoming alternatively male and female in one and the same pass of the joint cutter. This invention is different from all tools normally used for making tongue and groove joints, constrasting especially the conventional tongue and groove joint7 which requires two separate cutters, plus twice or more handling of material.
B R I EF DESCRIPTION
Fig. l is a horizontal view of the wood joint cutter, hereinafter called the "joint cutter", mounted in a router table or like machinery, the wood being led toward the joint cutter. Fig. 2 shows a vertical view of the joint cutter, mounted in a portable router, which is turned over in a hori- ~
zontal lying position. Here the wood is held stationary, while the joint - , cutter is moved along the wood. Fig. 3 is a plain view of a set of cutter bases as shown horizontally in Fig. l and vertically in Fig. 2. Fig. 4, 5, -6 show part of joint cutter with various types of teeth and Fig. 7 and show two ways of wood joining.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION
The reference numeral 9 indicates base of router and/or top of router table.

The joint cutter 10 as shown in Fig. 1 and 2 and partly in Fig. 4, 5, 6 and with teeth 11 embedded in wood 12 comprise a shank 13 having an inner end adapted to a router chuck 14 and an outer end threaded 15 to receive a nut 16 said shank 13 shouldered to carry a set of cutter bases 17 provided with a central hole 18 to accept the shouldered shank 13 said cutter bases 17 each having a number - preferably three, not shown in Fig. 1 and 2 - of inserted carbide teeth 11 said teeth 11 spaced peripherally around the cutter bases 17. In Fig. 1 the cutter bases 17 are held apart by a spacer ring 19 and depth cut control provided with a fence 20. In Fiy. 2, 4, 5 and 6 the cutter bases 17 are held apart by a ballbearing 21 and depth cut control provided with a stop ring 22. The cutter bases 17 are then held securely in place by a washer 23 and a nut 16. The cutter bases 17 in Fig. 3 are staggered - not shown in Fig. 1 and 2 - for better clearing of ;
wood shavings. Fig. 1, 2, 4 show teeth 11 at an angle, the teeth 11 being identical, suited for a single thickness of wood. The joint cutter 10 in Fig. 5 and 6 have wedgelike teeth 11 for easier assembling as shown in Fig. 8. The inner teeth 24 in Fig. 5 and 6 have a straight non-cutting side 25. In Fig. 6 the teeth 11 and 24 are uneven for the purpose of covering a variation of wood thicknesses with one joint cutter 10. The joint cutters 20 10 all have a structure by which the slotting capability of its combination of inner cutter 2~ and outer cutters 27 will determine thickness of wood as illustrated as an example in Fig. 7. Fig. 4 shows the joint cutter 10 pro-ducing a counterpart joint 29 (29 not shown on blueprint) matching the joint 30 in Fig. 2 to form a corner joint 31 in Fig. 7. Fig. 8 pictures a straight joint for assembling pieces of wood.

Claims (3)

The embodiments of the invention in which an exclusive property or privilege is claimed are defined as follows:
1. A rotary tool for the main purpose of making tongue and groove joints in wood, comprising:
a. a shank having one end adapted to fit a router chuck, or like machinery, its other ends being threaded to receive a nut;
b. said shank carrying two cutter bases, said cutter bases provided with a number of inserted carbide teeth, preferably three, spaced peripherally around each cutter base, said teeth being straight, wedgelike or at any desired angle;
c. said tool having a stop ring located between the two cutter bases to limit the depth of cut.
2. A rotary tool as defined in Claim 1 and having a structure by which its combination of inner and outer cutters with produce a pair of identical tongue and groove wood joint components.
3. A rotary tool as defined in Claim 2 in which said identical tongue and groove wood joint components are made by one and the same pass of the joint cutter.
