Abstract
ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE
This invention relates to an optical instrument for the optical magnification of a subject. More specifically, this instrument may be used to aid a person with impaired vision in reading or examining a given subject. The instrument comprises a main body portion with an eyepiece at one end and objective lenses at the opposite end and second lenses therebetween. The objective lenses are adjustable whereby the desired magnification can be selected. There are adjustable supports at the bottom to maintain the instrument at a selected focal distance from the subject being viewed.

Description
1~13753 ,............................ .
This invention relates to an optical instrument for optical magnification of a subject.
It is common for persons with impaired vision to read or examine a given subject with the aid of a magnifying glass. One of the disadvantages of using such an aid is that it is hand held and therefore the distances between the subject being viewed, the aid and the user's eye are constantly changing This presents a problem in maintaining the proper focus. Also the duration of use of the aid is dependent on the user's physical ability to hold the aid.
The present invention overcomes these disadvantages.
The present invention provides an instrument for optical magnification of a subject comprising a main body portion having an eyepiece at one end, an objective lens means at the opposite end; a second lens means therebetween, said first lens means including a plurality of lenses, said objective lens means and said second lens means being adapted to establish the selected magnification for said instrument; and maintaining means at said opposite end adapted to maintain said instrument at a selected focal distance from said subject.
From another aspect, the invention provides an instrument for optical magnification of a subject comprising: a main body por-tion having a first lens means secured therein, said first lens means including a plurality of lenses; an eyepiece secured at one end of said portion; an objective lens means detachably secured at the opposite end of said portion; a means for adjusting the distance between said first lens means and said objective lens means, thereby establishing the selected magnification; maintaining means detachably secured to said objective lens means and adapted to maintain said instrument at a selected focal distance from said subject; and a means for adjusting said selected focal distance.

~13753 optical instrument which is illustrated in the attached drawings, in which, Figure 1 is a cross-sectional side view;
Figure 2 is a top view; and Figure 3 is a perspective view.
With reference to the drawings, the optical instrument comprises a main cylindrical body portion 1. A cylindrical por-tion 3 is secured within the main body portion 1. The bottom end of portion 3 has a thickened portion 31 which is internally threaded, thereby being adapted to receive lens piece 34, the base of which is externally threaded at 35. The base is also internally threaded at 36', thereby adapted to hold cylindrical ring 36. The top portion 32 of the lens piece 34 is of smaller diameter and con-tains a lens 39 at the top thereof, the lens 39 being secured by means of flange portion 38 and locking ring 40. Lens 39' is secured within top portion 32 by means of locking rings 41 and 42.
A cylindrical eyepiece 2 is internall,y threaded at 21, thereby being adapted to be screwed onto main body portion 1 which is screw threaded externally at 11. Eyepiece 2 comprises a pair of lens 24 and 27, one at either end of the eyepiece. 'The lens are held in place by cylindrical locking rings 22 and 28 respect-ively, which are screwed into place at 23 and 29 respectively. The wall of the eyepiece is tapered at the top at 25 and the inner face ', 26 of the tapered portion is threaded.
Cylindrical end piece 4 is adapted to be detachably secured within the main body portion 1, at the bottom end, by means of a screw 7. The bottom end o end piece 4 has a thickened portion 45 which is internally threaded, thereby being adapted to receive lens piece 5, the base of which is externally threaded at 55. The top portion 51 of the lens piece 5 is of smaller diameter and contains a lens 53 at the top thereof, the lens 53 being secured by means of flange portion 52 and locking ring 54.
Outer cylindrical locking ring 60 is adapted to slide over "
end piece 4 and to be secured thereto by means of screw 61. Cylin-drical legs 62 are detachably secured to ring 60.
In operation, this optical instrument is used by holding the instrument upright with legs 62 resting on the paper and by looking through the eye-piece 2. The magnification may be adjus- ~1 ted by loosening screw 7 and sliding the end piece 4 within main r portion 1 until the desired magnification is obtained. Likewise, the position of ring 60 can be adjusted, thereby changing the focal distance between the end piece 4 and the subject being viewed.
