Abstract

ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE
The present invention provides a process to hingedly connect a door to a piece of furniture, for example a side wall of a piece of furniture, the connecting pieces being hinges comprising a hinge arm and a dowel cup or the like, which are connected to each other by means of toggle joints, preferably two toggle joints which form a link quadrangel and the door and the associated side wall of a piece of furniture are provided wit? dowel holes, wherein the side wall of the piece of furniture and the door leafs are approached to an assembly place, preferably at one level and preferably at the same time, the bearing surfaces for the hinge arm and the dowel cup being at the same level and the distance (A) between the bearing surfaces at the side of the wall of the piece of furniture and at the side of the door corresponds to the distance (B) between the dowel cup and the nose-shaped member or members, which are for example dowel pins of the hinge arm, and which bearing surfaces are for example formed by the dowel holes, the dowel cup and the hinge arm being mounted on or inserted in the corresponding piece of furniture and locked at the same time or at least, approximately at the same time.

Description

-` ~L0~

The present invention relates to a process for hingedly connecting a door panel to an associated panel, ~or example, a side wall of a piece of furniture~
In modern furniture hinges which comprise a hinye arm and dowelcup connected together by toggle joints forming a quadrangle, are used frequently, particularly in the kitchen furniture industry.
Such hinges firstly allow the doors or the door leafs to rest on the front sides of the side walls of a cabinet and to be lifted away from the front siaes during opening and swivelling. Most of the hinges of the aforementioned kind allow a subsequent adjustment - i.e. after assembly of the piece of furniture - in relation to the depth of the piece of furniture and the door gap, so that production tolerances, for example during the drilling of the dowel holes, can be equalized.
In the prior art, the assembly of the aforementioned hinge and door is performed by connecting the base plate of the hinge to the side wall of the piece of furniture, and directly inserting the dowel cup of the hinge, onto which the hinge arm proper is fitted by means of toggle joints, into an associated dowel hole in the door.
During assembly, the hinge arm is mounted to the base plate which is attached to the side wall of the piece of furniture and is connected to the latter by means of adjusting screws or the like.
This known process, however, has certain disadvantages.
Firstly, the intermediate supporting of the door creates a problem, because the hinge arm and toggle joint are spaced apart from the door. This means that the latter becomes bulky and moreover stacking of the door leafs is hardly feasible, because the protruding metal hinge parts tend to scratch the outer surface of the door, which generally has a special finish.

g~
The subsequent mounting of the hinge arm to -the base plate entails further difficulties as the entire weight of the aoor has to be carried during assembly.
It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide a process by means of which the doors of a piece of furniture can be economically stored together with the side wall of the piece of furniture until final assembly. They may for example be stacked up which makes possible a fast and simple connection of the door to the side wall of the piece of furniture. sy this process the furniture producers have to work with one part only per hinge which simplifies stock-keeping.
According to the present invention there is provided a process for hingedly connecting a door panel to an associated panel, said process comprising: laying the two panels side-by-side with their inside faces uppermost; forming attachment holes in the associated panel; forming a dowel hole in the door panel; providing a hinge unit including a hinge arm having attached thereto a mounting plate, a cup-shaped dowel dimension-ed to fit within said dowel hole, and a pair of toggle joints connecting said hinge arm and said cup-shaped dowel to form a quadrangular hinge linkage, with said mounting plate having extending therefrom sleeves adapted to fit in said attachment holes, said hinge unit being pivotable about said quadrangular hinge linkage between an open first position whereat said hinge arm and said cup-shaped dowel extend in substantially the same plane and a closed second position whereat said hinge arm extends at a substantially right angle to said cup-shaped dowel;
and said sleeves having pins provided therein at positions eccentric to the axes thereof, with said pins having hook members thereon such that on rotation of the pins in a first direction said hook members extend outwardly from said sleeves to engage lateral surfaces of said attachment holes; inserting said sleeves in said attachment holes of said associated panel; rotating said pins so as to urge said hook rnembers into said lateral surfaces of said attachment holes to retain said mounting plate on said associated panel; aligning said dowel hole with said cup-shaped dowel; and inserting said up-shaped dowel into said dowel hole and retaining it therein by means of addi-tional hook-shaped members engaging the side walls of said dowel hole.
The hinge according to the invention is characterised in that the hinge axm carries holdings for direct assembly with the piece of furniture before the direct connection to the piece of furniture.
In a further implementation example the mountlng plates are attached in a manner known per se to the hinge arm by means of one or more adjusting screws. -The process according to the invention is particularlyadvantageous for those persons who buy pieces of furniture for self-assembly, which is becoming more common, as the correct location of the furniture parts is automatically assured.
In addition, there is no risk that individual parts, particularly small parts, get lost which is an especial disadvantage if the assembly is done at home, where spare parts are not readily available.
The invention will now be aescribed in more detail by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:-Figure 1 is a diagrammatic perspective view of a door panel and associated panel during assembly with a hinge;
Figure 2 is a diagrammatic perspective view of the hinge.
As may be seen from Fig. 1, a panel 1, adapted to --form a cupboard side wall, and a door panel 2 are brought to an assembly point on an assembly support 3. The assembly support 3 is provided with rollers 4. Dowel holes 5 ~or the dowel cup 7 of the hinge 6 are provided in the door leaf 2, whereas there are rough-drilled dowel holes 8 in the side wall 1 of -the piece of furniture, into which aowel sleeves 9, being arranged on the mounting plate 10 of the hinge arm 11, can be inserted.
The side wall 1 of the p:iece of ~urniture and the door leaf 2 are aligned in such manner that the dowel holes 5, 8 assume the same level. The distance A between the dowel holes 5, 8 corresponds to distance B between dowel sleeves 9 and dowel cup 7 when the hinge 6 is opened.
In this position the opened hinge 6 can be easil~r inserted into dowel holes 8, 5, either manually or mechanically.
As may be seen particularly in Fig. 2, the hinge 6 according to the invention is provided with hooks 12 on dowel pins which are eccentrically arranged with the dowel sleeves 9 and having a slit head 13. The hooks 12 project through apertures in the wall of the sleeves 9, similar hooks 12' are provided in the area of the dowel cup 7. The hooks 12 and 12' can be urged into the side wall of the dowel holes 8 and 5 with the aid of suitable adjusting devices, for example a screw driver, which engages in the case of hook 12, the head 13 and thus securely fastens the hinge in the holes.
This kind of attachment makes it also possible to later dismount the hinge 6 without damaging the latter or a furniture part. ~ ;
Subsequent adjusting of the hinge arm, to equalize possible production tolerances is possible by unscrewing or tightening an adjusting screw 14 and a fixing screw 15. If both screws are loose, the hinge can be moved with its hinge arm 11, in the depth of the piece of furniture in the area of the longitudinal slit 16.
The head of the tightened adjusting screw 14, is I, ,, .. . .

supported by the hinge arm 11, whereas the thread of the adjust-ing screw 14 engages into a female screw -thread of the mounting plate 10. Fixing screw 15, however, engages into a female screw thread of the hinge arm 11 and is supported with its front side by the mounting plate 10.
The angular position of the hinge arm 11 and thus alignment of the door in the door gap of the piece of furniture can be obtained and determined by more or less tightening adjust~
ing screw 14 and fixing screw 15.
It has proved to be particularly expedient to arrange the screws in the mounting plate 10 in such a way that the standard distance between each other corresponds to the standard distance of the row of holes as they are used at present in the system-furniture-construction, or of a multiple of the distance between the holes.
This makes it possible to mount the hinge to every conventional row of holes comprising standardized 5 mm holes, whereby the hinge is centered at the same time and fitting being effected by simply tightening the screws.
The other parts belonging to the hinge 6, as for example toggle joint shafts and bearings, are not considered in the present invention as they do not form part thereof and are moreover known to persons skilled in the art.
