Abstract

IMPROVED LAMP LEADS

ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE
Dispersion strengthened copper leads are used for inner and/or outer leads in electric lamps.

Description

5'~'~
.' LD 7271 ., .

t, .
., BACKGROUND OF TH~ IhVE~TION
.' This invention r&late~ to electric lamp~ and~ in .~ particular, to an improved lead wire ~ox electric lamp~.
, In the prior art, coppar or væiou~ copper alloy~
t.' 5 have been used as ~h~ material or lead wire in electri~
~ l~mps. A recurring problem has be~n the weakening or annealing .,' of the copper during gla3s fonming operations. A-~ a specific - example, in making incandescent lamps5 the lead w~res and ,~ exhaust tube are inserted into a flare and the s~aller end of the flare is heated and pre~sed to make what i~ known a~ the ' stem.
;, The stem press operation softens the lead wire~ to ;~ the point that tie wires are used to assure lamp reliability, particularly against shock. The button forming and tie wiro operations add ~teps to the manufacture of lamps, increasing cost and adding poss~ble source of shrinkage (rejected lamp3).
1, , While a variety of materials have been tried as ~ub-" stitutes for the copper or copper-alloy lead wires, none had been found suitable. Metals or alloys that adequately with3tand stem pressing at higher temperatures have too high a resistancel, adversely af~ecting the efficacy of the lamp. While larger diameter wire might alleviate the problem somewhat, this solu-tion causes other difficulties, such a~ increa ed cost and possible sealing problems.
~`
SUMMARY OF THE INVE~TION
In view of the foregoing, it is therefore an object , of the present inve~tion to provide an improved lead wire for ~ electric lamps~ ~ ~
' ;" ,3`.

A, ~

~ - LD 7271 Another object of the pre~ent invention is to provide i a lead wire capable of withstanding higher-stem pres3 ``~ temperatures.
3 A further o~ject of the pre~ent invention i8 to pro-;'~ 5 vide an improve~ inner lead for electric l~mp~.
A~other object of the present invention i~ to proviaa ~ an improved outer lead for e~ectric la~ps.
'~ A further object of the present invention is to pro-vide a lead wire capa~le of with~tanding hiyher stem pres~
temperature~ and having acceptable diameter and reYistance characteri~tic~.
!~i ; The foregoing ob~ects are achieved in the presen~
invention wherein it has been found that dispersion strengthened copper wire withstands elevated pres~ seal temperatllres and, '~ 15 when used for the inner lead wires, eliminates the need for tie wires due to its retained stiffnessO
.1 1 BRI~P D~SCRIPTION OF THE DRAWING
A more complete under~tanding of the present inven-tion can be obtained by considering the following detailed de~cription in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, in which:
FIG. 1 illustrates a mount for an incandescent lamp in accordance with the prior art.
FIG. 2 illustrates a mount for an incandescent lamp in accordance with the present in~ent on.

~- . DESCRIPTIO~ OF I~E PREFERRED EMBODI~E~TS
FIG. 1 illustrates a completed mount in accordance with the prior art. Specifically, the mount c~mprises a flare 11 having exhaust tube 1~ and lead wire~ 13 and 1~ inserted " ' '. , ~' 2-~`:

therein. As known to thos~ of skill in the art,: lead wir~s ~ 13 and 14 each comprise three seg~ents of conductive material.
;~ Specifically, lead wires generally co~prise a~ outer conductor connected to an inner conductor by a short length of dum~t 3 5 wire which is positioned i~ pre~s~d area 15 to provide a seal between the inside and out~ide of the gla88 envelope of ~he lamp. A3 illustrated in FIG. 1, the upper portion of tho ste~
is inserted into the glas~ env~lop~. mu~, the portion~ of laad wires 13 and 14 extendi~g upwardly-from pressed area 15 ~onstitute the inner lead wires while the portion~ of lead wireS 13 and 14 extending downwardly from pressed area 15 con- ¦
stitute the outex lead wires.
The end3 of the inner lead wireq are con~ected one ,i each to each end of refractory filament 167 senerally comprising tungsten. Encircling the central portion of filament 16 is support wire 17. Encircling each of lead wires 13 and 14 are tie wires 18 and 19, the other end~ of which are embedded in ~ glass button 20 formed in the end of the exhaust stem.
; In accordance with the prior art ~or low wattag~
gas-filled inc~ldescent lamps, lead wires 13 and 14 generally comprisQ nickel plated copper or copper alloy~ In accordance with the presen~ inventionJ illustrated in FIG~ 2, the inne~ or outer leads may comprise what is known as a dispersion strength-., I
ened copper wire. Dispersion strengthening of metaLs is k~own in the art an~, in particular, disper~ion strengthened copper ~' wire is known in the art and available from the Glidden ~etals ~ ,~6~ Division o~ SCM Corporation as "GlidCop" AL-20; the same mate-;' rial is avail~ble from GTE Sylvania, Inc., as DSC 200. This wire may be us0d for either the inner or outer leads and, for ' 30 example, may comprise 10-mil diameter wire for the inner lead~
; and 18-mil di2meter wire for outer lead~. As known by tho~e of "~ n a r~

~LO~ 6 LD 7271 ~, " . I
;~
~,-, skill in the art, the outer sllrface of at least the inner l~ad .~. w~res co~?rises a nickel plate to elirninate contami~ation within 'che la~p ~ue to the relea~e of contaminants from the '., surface of the copper when the la~ lig~ted.
It has been found that disper~ion strengthened c~pper ~.: wire as de~cribed above does ~ot soften or anneal in the fires .
r,! u~ed to soften the flare and exhaust tube prior to pre~ing~
~: A~ a re~ult, the lead wires in a fini~h~d mount are stiffer in ~'. accordance with the present invention~ and the need fox tie wire~ and 19 or po-~sibly the center suppoxt wire 17 i8 , obviated.
A completed mo~lnt in accordance with the pre~ent invention, as illustrated in FIG. 2,t therefore merely co~priYe~
a flare 11. exhaust tube 12, lead wire~ 13 and 14, t~nd a suit-able filament 16. The con3truction of the mount is thus sim-plified without compromising lamp performance. The lead wire3 previously deqcribed have a resistance and diameter co~parable to that of lead wir~s of the prior art. In addition, lamp4 in accordance with the present invention can be manufactured at higher seal tem~erature~.
Havincl thus described the invention, it will ~e ; apparent to tho~e of skill in the art that variou-q modifica tions can be made within the spirit and scope of the present invention. For example, while described in a preferred embodi-~5 ment as an inner lead for a standard incande~cent lam~, the lead wire in accordance with the present invention may also be utilized in conjunction with miniature, fluorescent, high intensity, and high wattage incandescent lamps as well.
