FAUCET NUT ASSEMBLY
Summary Of The Invention This invention relates to a tail nut for connecting tubing to a faucet connection. The nut includes a removable collar part by which the nut can be made to accommodate tubing of various diameters.
This invention presents an innovation in the field of connectors. Previously, supply houses, hardware stores, and plumbers have been forced to maintain a large supply of various sized tail nuts on hand for the coupling of various sized tubing. With the present invention, the presence of a removable tube collar does away with the need for a large nut supply in that one nut can be used for more than one size of tubing.
Accordingly, it is an object of the invention to pro-vide a faucet tail nut capable of accommodating tubing of various sizes.
Another object of this invention is to provide a faucet assembly having a threaded connector secured to tubing with a tail nut having a frangible tube receiving part.
Other objects of this invention will be apparent upon a reading of the following description.
Brief Description of the Drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of the tail nut of the invention .
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken along line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2 but without the removable tube collar.
10~598 Figure 4 is a sectional view showing the tail nut in assembled form.
Figure 5 is a sectional view similar to Figure 4 but with the tail nut accommodating tubing of a different size.
Description of the Preferred Embodiment Referring to Figures 1 and 2, tail nut 10 is composed of a body 12 having a side wall 14 and one end wall 16. Side wall 14 is internally threaded and carries wings 18 which are used in tightening the nut. An opening 20 is formed in nut end wall 16 and is defined in Figures 1, 2,and 4 by a collar 22.
Collar 22 is connected to end wall 16 by an annular thin wall section 24.
Collar 22 can be detached from the body 12 of nut 10 at wall section 24 by twisting or flexing of the collar. In this manner the diameter of opening 20 in the nut can vary from one size as seen in Figure 2 to a larger size as seen in Figure 3 upon the removal of collar 22.
In Figure 4, nut 10 is shown turned onto a threaded connector 30. Connector 30 is a threaded tubular part of a faucet assembly which normally includes one or more valves and a spigot.
A tube 32 extends through collar 22 of nut 10 and includes an enlarged cone shaped head 34. Tube head 34 fits compressively between nut end wall 16 and connector 30.
Figure 5 displays a similar connection except that collar 22 of nut 10 has been removed to accommodate a tube 35 of a larger diameter.
The invention is not to be limited to the details above given but it may be modified within the scope of the appended claim.

Claims
PROPERTY OR PRIVILEGE IS CLAIMED ARE DEFINED AS FOLLOWS:
1. In combination a faucet assembly having a threaded connector, tubing having a body part and a cone-shaped end, and a tail nut, the improvement wherein said nut includes a body with a side wall and an end wall, said side wall being internally threaded for connection to said threaded connector, said end wall having an opening means for receiving the body part of said tubing, said opening means defined in part by a collar, said collar being attached to said nut end wall by a frangible means for permitting breaking separation of said collar from said end wall, said opening means having one diametrical size when said collar is attached to said end wall and a larger diametrical size when said collar is separated from the end wall to accommodate tubing body parts of various diametrical size, said nut threaded onto said connector with the cone-shaped end of said tubing located between said connector and end wall and with said body part of the tubing extending through said opening means.
