Abstract

ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE

The present invention provides an indexed divider system having in a set a plurality of divider sheets having tabs projecting from the outer edge with exposed locations spaced at intervals along the outer edge of the sheets, a pocket with a transparent front wall located along the outer edge of the top sheet adapted to receive an index card therein having areas opposite the exposed portion of the tabs of the set for printing information about the material indexed by the respective tabs. The divider sheets may be of plastic and are reusable by inserting new cardboard index cards in the pocket.

Description

;`
This application relates to an invention for improve-ments in divider systems of the type useful for indexing printed matter such as reports, notes, and other such data which is commonly compiled in non-permanent loose leaf binders such as the three-ring variety. In particular, it relates to divider systems having tabs for facilitating the visual and manual locat-ion of chapters, divisions or categories of such printed matter, and means for indexing the location of these categories of printed matter.
The present invention is especially useful for material which is bound in a non-permanent manner such as in three-ring - or compressed binders in which the material may be compiled, ~
removed or rearranged by the user.
; In this context, printed matter includes any inform-, . .
ation printed or hand-written on paper or the like, whether it be in the nature of reports, hand notes, or pictorial and photo-graphic illustrations.
Although dividers, with locating tabs, have been known in the past, the designs previously presented have had certain disadvantages and shortcomings. Those made of paper or heavy cardboard were generally of limited resilience, durability and resistance to water or chemicals. Some had tabs but no means for indicating what categories of subject matter were located there.
~; ~
` Some had tabs on which categories or divisions of subject matter could be written or indicated, but they could not be revised or reused if the contents of the binder were rearranged or ;' changed. In other systems the tabs were too small to contain sufficient information, or were easily torn off or broken.
Others lacked ease of manufacture or were aesthetically un-attractive.
,~:

` lO911ZZ

It is therefore the object of this invention to provide a durable, useful, versatile, reusable and attractive divider system with quick and efficient indexing means whereby the user may easily locate categories or divisions of written or printed material and open the binder at the desired location.
It is also intended that this invention provide for an indexed divider system which may readily be revised or reused and which has sufficient durability and resistant to water and handling.
It is also the purpose of this invention to present an indexed ' 10 divider~system which is neat and attractive and is made more useful by enabling the user to write his own indexing information thereon. -~
' These and other objects are sought to be achieved by the present invention which provides an indexed divide'r system for the indexing pages of printed matter comprising a set of divider sheets adapted to be bound in loose leaf fashion adjacent their inner edges in overlying relationship, and having tabs projecting from their outer edges to extend beyond the pages indexed, each of the tabs having a portion thereof spaced 20 ~ longitudinally so as to be exposed to the view uncovered by the overlying sheets-. - The'set also has on one of the divider sheets, preferably the uppermost, a pocket, preferably adjacent the outer edge of the said sheet,'and extending therealong opposite-the'tabs of the divider sheets.~ The pocket has a transparent -;
front wall and an open side through which may be inserted an indexed insert which has areas opposite the respective'exposed areas of the tabs on which information concerning that section may be printed. The indexed divider system may have additionally numerical, or lettered, or other coated indicia on the tabs, ! and a similar corresponding indicia on the respective areas of index insert which corresponds to the exposed area of the tabs.

Ideally, this set is made of plastic or other durable material having a clear plastic front wall on the pocket ` which is designed to hold therein a removable index card ,, adapted for writing or printing thereon. In one embodiment of ~i the invention the tabs extend from the top edge of the sheets a .~ distance corresponding to a multiple of the length of the divider ; ., , sheets divided by the number of sheets to a set, whereby if the number of sheets are N, and the length of the divider sheet is L, the tabs would have lengths corresponding to L/N, 2L/N, 3L/N, etc. respectively.
,, Thus, the present invention provides an indexed divider system wherein the categories of printed matter are , segregated according to sheets of a durable reusable material having coded: indices on tabs clearly exposed to the viewer ; when the material is in the closed pos tion, and in which a visible index card has areas for inserting information concerning the varlous indexed categories opposite the exposed portion of the tab relating to that material.
The present invention may be better understood by - 20 a description of one embodiment thereof as preferred by this inventor with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of one set of indexed dividers of the system corresponding to the present invention;
,;

illustrated in Figure 1 in which an index card thereof is partially removed;
Figure 3 illustrates a second divider sheet from the set illustrated in Figure l; and ~:, . ^ .

i.

lO9il22 .
Figure 4 illustrates a three-ring binder containing loose-leaf pages of printed or pictorial material in which an indexed divider of the present invention is used to locate categories of the material indexed according to geograph-ical criteria for illustrative purposes.
Figure 1 of the drawings illustrates a set of indexed dividers 2 in accordance with the present invention, which in the illustrated embodiment, includes a set of six divider sheets - 10- 4, 6, 8, 10, 11 and 12 respectively, all of like shape and dimensions except for the tabs referred to hereinafter.
The illustrated embodiment is adapted for use in a ring binder system and has three holes of conventional spacing, illustrated at 14, 15 and 16 respectively adajcent to the inner edge 18 of the divider sheets. In this context, the term inner edge is used to refer to that edge of the sheet which is adjacent to the binding means of whatever nature that might be.
The top edges of the sheets, referred to collectively at 20 and the bottom edges at 22, are perpendicular to the inner edge i8 and generally conform to the size of standard sizes of writing paper or typewriter paper commonly used.
The front or top sheet 4 and subsequent sheets 6, 8, 10, and 11 have an outer edge at 21, which extends from the top edge to the bottom edge except for the tab mentioned herein-after.
The first, top, or front sheet 4 has a tab 24 pro-jecting from the outer edge and extending therealong from the top edge 20 for a distance of approximately one-sixth of its outer edge dimension.

Y~ .j , The next sheet, 6, has a tab which likewise projects from its outer edge, but extends from the top edge a distance of two-sixths of its outer edge dimension so that the lower half of the tab comprising one-sixth of the length of the sheet is exposed, as seen at 26. In a similar manner sheets 8, 10, 11, and 12 have tabs 27, 28, 30 and 31, all of which expose an equal length of a lower portion of the tab in sequence.
, The dimension of the top sheet is illustrated in Figure 2 and the corresponding dimensions of the next sheet, 6, and its tab are illustrated in Figure 3.
, It will be appreciated that the length of the tabs ~
is to some extent dictated by the number of sheets in a set -=
so that where there are five sheets, each of them is accorded one-fifth of the outer edge dimension for visual presentation.
However, a set with ten sheets could easily be dimensioned so that each tab occupied one-tenth of the column between the outer edge of the sheet and the outer edge of the tabs. It is, of course, possible to set the tabs so they ocaupy less than the whole length of the outer edge of the sheets.
In the illustrated embodiment, each of the tabs is given a respective sequential numerical indicia printed on the portion of the tab visible when the preceding overlying sheets are in position, i.e. the bottom one-sixth of the tab.
While Figure 3 illustrates that sheets, 6, 8, 10 and i2 are substantially identical and comprise merely a sheet having ring holes and appropriately dimensioned tabs, the first t' or top sheets 4 also includes an indexing pocket 32, which comprises a transparent front wall 34 overlying the outer half of the top sheet 4, and bonded thereto along the lower edge 36, the inner edge (of the transparent sheet 34), 38 and the top ; .

edge 40, thereby forming a pocket with the sheet 4 open along the edge 42 which corresponds to the outer edge of the divider -~ sheet, and extends along the outer edge dimension thereof.
In the illustrated embodiment, the aforesaid pocket 32 has located therein an index insert 39 of paper or some other , suitable material for writing, typing, or printing on, the dimensions of which are substantially coincident with the interior size of the pocket allowing the card to be easily inserted or removed from the pocket. This card may, as illustrated, be divided by lines such as 44, into sections corresponding to the exposed area of the tabs of the respective divider sheets.

... .
Along the inward edge of the index insert, each area is labelled -with a sequential numerical indicia corresponding to the tab which it is opposite.
Figure 4 illustrates use of the divider system of the type illustrated, in which pages of the text of a report or the like 50 are compiled in a ring binder 52 having rings , 54, 56, and 58 corresponding to the holes 14, 15 and 16 of the divider sheets and similar holes in the pages of the report.
For purposes of illustration, it is assumed that the embodiment illustrated in Figure 4 is used in conjunction with report which contains separate chapters of information relating to five different geographical countries respectively.
If the~first or-top divider sheet 4 indicates the location or -- beginning of the chapter relating to information on Austria, this is indicated on the card 39 in the area numbered 1.
Similarly, if the second chapter is identified by sheet 6, bearing the numeral 2 on its tab to locate the beginning of the chapter dealing with information on Brazil, the second area is appropriately labelled. Similar titles for separate chapters .
~ - 6 -` lO9~1ZZ

- for the other areas are marked in the other areas of the indexed card.
As can be seen from Figure 1 and Figure 4, the " present system not only provides a divider which is visually and manually accessible, but also an indexed system in which the title of the various categories located by the dividers can be written by the user on the appropriate area of the index insert.
Furthermore, the title of the respective chapters or categories appears opposite the corresponding numbered or labelled tab eliminating the need to mentally correlate the index to the numerical tab system. It is very easy for the user to run down -the index to the category desired and immediately opposite engage the tab which locates the beginning of that chapter.
, This manner of locating the desired material will ~ function even though the pages may be rearranged and increased d, or decreased. The index need not be altered, as would be the . case where the index relates to page numbers in the report etc.
- As presently conceived by the inventor, this ; 20 invention is ideally for manufacture in durable material, such as polyvinyl chloride or other synthetic materials which have-;,, . ~
the desired flexibility of paper or cardboard, but have much more durability, resistance to wear, and to water and chemicals.`
, However, the present system overcomes the disadvantage presented by some synthetic products which do not allow the user to write on them with an ordinary pen or pencil. The index insert may be of paper or other materials suitable for writing, and may be inserted in the pocket where it is relatively protected by the synthetic pocket formed between the divider sheet 4 and the clear plastic overlay 34.

lO9il22 :
Furthermore, if the material is rearranged or the - divider is to be reused in another report, it only requires replacement of the index insert with a new one to adapt the system to the new use. The rest of the divider set remains reusable.
Unlike divider systems which have means for insert~
ing titles in the construction of the tab, the present system provides much more room to write information concerning the category or chapter indexed.
Making the divider system out of plastic such as polyvinyl chloride or similar materials allows for formation of the pocket by heat-sealing the inner edge and the top and bottom edges of the clear plastic overlay 34 to the underlying divider sheet 4.
Although the preferred embodiment contemplates insertion of the index on the first divider sheet at the front of the text, it could, of course, be applied elsewhere such as at the back or indeed it would be possible if desired to provide i~ for a pocket and indexing insert on each of the divider sheets.
Although the illustrated embodiments contemplates a set of tabs which in total occupy the entire length of the outer e~ge (so that the last sheet in fact has no outer edge discernible, but only a tab running its entire length), it -is quite possihle to dimension the tab so that they occupy only a portion of the outer edge dimension, and also to dimension the index pocket 32 to correspond. It is also a matter of choice whether the tabs on second, third, or fourth sheet below the top sheet are only as long as the exposed area or extend all the way from the top edge of the divider sheet, although the latter is illustrated for purposes of this application. In that case the length of the tabs may be calculated by XxL/N
if X is the number of the sheetsin the numerical sequence of ; - 8 -i~` lO911"Z
.

a set, L as the length of the other dimension of the sheets and : N is the number of sheets in the set.
` Although the illustrated embodiment herein described . comprises the inventor's best known manner of making and using the subject invention, it will be realized that numerous variat-ions and alterations thereof might be employed without departing from the inventive concept herein.
