Abstract
ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE
A therapeutic composition for local application to the skin in the prevention and treatment of dermatoses.
The composition comprises about 40 to 50 cc of an oily product obtained by condensing fumes resulting from the combustion of newspaper, about 25 to 35 g of petroleum jelly, about 15 to 35 g of sulfur and about 1 to 2 cc of cade oil. Such composition of matter has been found to possess valuable therapeutic properties which render it particularly suitable for the treatment of psoriasis, alopecia aerata, scabies and acne.

Description
'77~
This invention is concerned with a new and valuable composition for the treatment of various skin disorders, such as psoriasis~ alopecia aerata, acne and scabies.
Psoriasis is an inflammatory skin disease of uncertain cause, characterized by the appearance of bright red, coin-shaped patches on the skin, especially on the knees~
elbows and scalp. These bright red patches are often covered with delicate silvery-white scales which when removed expose capillary bleeding points. Although this disease is not serous in that it does not affect the general health~ it can be very annoying in that its constant appearance and reappearance, with spread to involve many different parts of the body, can be a source of great unhappiness. Numerous treatments have been proposed for psoriasis meeting with varying and inconsistent degrees of success. It is generally agreed that there is no satisfactory simple and convenient treatment for psoriasis~
Alopecia aerata is a ~ondition of baldness which occurs in patches. Bald spots may appear on any area of the body, but most often the head is involved. Loss of hair is sudden and may be partial or total. Regrowth is usually slow, varying from a few months to several years. In some cases bald spots are extremely resistant despite all efforts to stimulate hair growth by treatments which are generally difficult to put into practice and often present disagreeable effects to the patient. Alopecia aerata affects both sexes and the cause is unknown.
It is therefor an ob~ect of the prcsent Invention to provide a new therapeutic composition for local applica-tion to the skin in the prvention and treatrnent of dermatoses~ particularly psoriasis and alopecia aerata, which is simple and convenient to use and yet is very effective.

Applicant has found quite unexpectedly that by mixing sulfur, petroleum jelly, cade oil and an oily product obtained by condensing fumes resulting from the combustion of newspaper, a composition of rnatter is obtained which pssesses outstanding therapeutic properties in the treat-metnt of psoriasis and alopecia aerata. This therapeutic composition has also been found to be effective for treating sabies as wela as acne.
The composition according to the present invention comprises about 40 to 50 cc of the aforesaid oily product, about 25 to 35 g of petroleum jelly, about 15 to 35 g of sulfur and about 1 to 2 cc of cade oil.
~ preferred therapeutic composition according to the invention consists of about 40 cc of the oily product, about 30 g of petroleum jelly, about 25 g of sulfur and about l cc of cade oil.
The composition of the invention which is essentially in the form of an ointment is applied liberally to the afflicted areas to lthe skin. In the case of psoriasis, a cleaning of the areas with rubbing alcohol is first effected. The ointment is then worked into the skin, in a quantity as much as the skin can absorb. The application of the ointment is repeated once every day for the first week of treatment, once every second day for the second week and twice a week thereafter until substantial remission of the symptoms of psoriasis. Acute cases of psoriasis generally require two to three weeks of treatment for complete healing, while most severs or chronic cases requlre a period of at least two months~ During treatment, it ha3 been observed that the redness of the psoriatic condition ~Jas greatly reduced with the skin corQmencing to change to its norrnal color. -2-~7'7836 composition of the invention is that once the symptoms of psoriasis have been entirely cleared, no psoriasis returns in the healed areas. As a preventive measure, it is however recommended to continue the treatment twice a month during the year following the healing~
The treatment of alopecia aerata, scabies and acne with the therapeutic composition of the invention is essentially the same as that for psoriasis. In acute cases of alopecia aerata~ the regrowth of hair generally occurs after the first month of treatment, while chronic cases require a period oE treatment of about two months, Persons suf~erlng from acute cases of scabies or acne are healed in about one week's time; as for chronic cases, healing takes place after two months.
The subject invention will now be illustrated with reference to the following examples of preparation and cli~ical cases ~etting forth some of the results observed.
A therapeutic ointment was prepared by thoroughly mixing together about 40 cc of an oil product obtained by condensing the fumes liberated during the combustion of newspaper, about 30 g of petroleum jelly, about 25 g of sulfur and about 1 cc of cade oil.
A simple method of producing the above oily product consists in rolling a sheet of newspaper to form a sharply tapering cone and tightly fitting the base of the newspaper cone into the upper portion of a beaker. In order to rnaintain the conical shapc of thc rolled paper~ thc outer edge of the paper may be stapled or connected by pins to the body of the forMed cone. The tip is next lit and the paper is allowed to burn first with flames for a short period'of tlme and then without flames as the flames 83~;
extinguish b~ themselves, As the cone gradually cDnsumes itself~ a portion of the fumes which are liberated moves downwardly into the beaker to condensate on the cooler walls thereof and form an oily product which is collected. Before the peper cone consumes itself totally, it must be removed from the beaker in order to prevent the burning of the oily product formed on the inner surface of the container and which is inflammable. A single sheet o f newspaper must be used at a time in order to obtain the desired oily product.
The oily product obtained by the method outlined above showed the following chemical analysis:
Total carbon (C): 85%
The major components were identified as follows:
- lignin: 60%
- oils and resins: 20%
- phenol: 15%
- quinone: 5% -EXAMPLE_2 A theraputic composition was obtained in the same manner as in Example 1, with the exception that the amounts of the ingredients were varied. About 50 cc of the oily product were suitabley combined with about 30 g of petroleum jelly, about 25 g of sulfur and 1 cc of cade oil.
CASE A
An adult male had extensive areas of psoriasis of chronic nature for more than thirty~seven years and had consulted several doctors and specialists. Althoush having undergone many different treatments, his case worsened with time and seemed hopeless. The therapeutic compositlon prepared in accordance with Example 1 was applied to the afflicted areas of the skin and complete hcallng occurre(l after one month of treatrnent. No psoriasis in the healed areas ever returned.
3L(~7783~i CASE B
An adult female suffering from alopecia aerata for many years had completely lost her hair. The person was given a treatment with the therapeutic composition of Example 1 and the regrowth of hair took place after two weeksc CASE C
An adult maLe had aggrevated areas of acne in his face which existed for six years~ The various drugs and treatments which were prescribed by doctors and skin specialists had been ineffective in healing the case. The therapeutic composition prepared in accordance with Example 2 was applied to the afflicted areas and complete healing occurred after two weeks of treat~ent.
