Abstract

ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE
A hand truck including a large wheel means connected to a frame with an elongated first portion from which extends a handle connected to a second portion to provide two separated handle portions so that one or the other is sufficiently high above the ground during use of the cart so as to avoid muscular strain in the back of the user. The large wheel means reduces the difficulty in moving the loaded truck aver rough or soft terrain. A gripping means is provided to grasp and hold slabs or flat stones even when such a slab or stone lies closely adjacent to others and is therefore difficult to grip.

The present invention relates ~o a hand truck apparatus. Mbre par-ticularly the invention provides a simple, practical and efficient hand truck which is designed to avoid muscle strain along the spine of the user. The hand truck is useful by a consumer for use about his property. In particular, the hand truck can be used to m3ve, place or re-align patio stones or slabs.
The hand truck according to this invention includes a handle design which can be gripped without bending over thus avoiding muscle strain in the back. Homeowners, who often wish to carry out proFerty ImF~3vements, may be more susceptible to muscle strains than are those employed in the construction ~r manufacturing industrles since, generally speaking, the average homeowner is not in good physical condition although he is aware of tha hazards of improperly lifting heavy loads. The apparatus according to this invention allows a person to avoid si~nificant bending in order to pick up and move such heavy loads.
The hand truck also includes a large wheel to mimmuze difficulty in moving the truck across uneven or soft terrain. The hand truck may include a gripping means adapted to hold the object to be moved onto the truck. One form of the gripping means allows the user to pick up patio stones or slabs which are positioned closely to other such slabs. The gripping means is capable of sliding bet~-een such closely abutting slabs, grip the sLab to be moved and re~ove it with surprising ease.
One aspeat of the invention is a hand truck comprising a frame member having a first elongated portion, a first end of which is affixed to a carrier platform and fnam the second end of which angularly extends an elongated handle and a second portion of said frame member affixed adjacent to the first end of the said first portion and extending adjacent to said end of said h~ndle re~ote fnom said first portion, wheel support means mounted adjacent to said first end of said first portion and a wheel means, which, in the axial direction, .' s~i~

is large relative to its circumference and which is axially connected to said wheel support means, wherein said wheel support means is behind said carrier platform, on the same side of said first elongated portion as is the æcond elongated portion.
A second aspect of the invention is a h~nd truck comprising a carrier platform affixed to a frame member, wheel support means affixed to and behind said carrier platfonm and a wheel neans, which, in the axlal direction, is large relative to its circumf rence and which is axially connected to said wheel support means, a first and a second handle posi~ion along said frame member remote from said ~heel support neans, the first han~le position being at a substantial height generally above the second handle position when the second handle position lies on the ground while the hand truck is in a first position and the second handle position being at a substantial height generally above the first handle position when the first handle position lies on the ground while the hand truck is in a second position.

-: , , . . -. ., s~o For the purposes of illustration but not as limitation an embodi-ment of the invention will hereinafter be described with reference to the drawings, in which:
Figure 1 shows the hand truck in a "face down" orientation;
Figure 2 shows the hand truck in a standing orientation; and Figures 3a, 3b, 3c and 3d show the hand truck in a series of orientations in the process of removing a patio slab.
Referring to Figure 1, one can see a frame member including a first elongated portion 1 and a second portion 2 together with a handle 3 at the end of the portions 1 and 2 remo~e from the large wheel means 10. The length of the first portion 1 is sufficient to provide a leverage arm about the wheel 10 so that the heavy loads can be carried while the main load is borne by the wheel 10.
At a first end of the first portion 1 of the frame member remote ~rom the handle 3 is a carrier platform 5 which includes a support membér 6 and a support flange 7 shown more clearly in Figure 2. The first end of the first portion 1 may be joined to the end of the second portion 2 in a lapped manner as shown at 4. This lapped construction provides increased strength to resist shear forces caused by the load being carried.
A large wheel means 10 is axially joined to the wheel support means which comprises the axle bracket 8 and cross-bar 9. The wheel is preferably a large drum-type wheel which provides sufficient support for the heavy loads and, because of its large surface area contacting the ground, the hand truck can be easily moved over soft or uneven terrain. The large wheel means could also consist of a plurality of wheels, a set of wheels covered by a strong .
, ~ wire fence arrangement or a lug or web-loop arrangement supported on a plurality of wheels.

The first portion of the frame member may include at least one open-ing 13 adapted to receive a gripping means 12. The openings 13 may be a series of simple holes through the first portion or a series of elongated holes to receive the gripping means. Alternatively lnot shown) at least one opening may comprise an elongated slot along a significant length of the first portion 1, this slot including a series of notches to receive the gripping means at different positions.
The gripping means shown generally at 12 may comprise a shaft por-tion ending in a grip handle 15. At the other end of the shaft is an angled gripping arm 16. A retaining means 14 may surround the shaft and may comprise a spring to resiliently hold the gripping means from falling from the hole or may be a nut or wing-nut on a threaded portion of the shaft. The gripping means can be rotated as shown in Figure 1 so that it can slip between adja-cent patio stones as shown in Pigure 3a and be turned so that the gripping arm 16 lies under the edge of the stone. Also included is a pad 11 which is mounted along the first portion of the frame member and may extend along its length and also across the support member 6 to the support flange 7. The pad helps prevent the slab from being scratched or marred while it is being moved.
First handle position 3a rests at a substantial height above the second handle position 3b when the truck rests in a first orientation as shown in Figure 1 or Figure 3a. Thus the hand truck carrying a heavy load can be handled without the need of the user to stoop. In the first orienta-tion, as shown in Figure 3a, the handlepositions 3a, 3b are significantly spaced generally in one 3a above the other 3b. When the hand truck is rotated to a second orientation shown in Figure 3d, the handle position 3b is generally substantially above the handle position 3a. Thus in either orientation the user does not need to stoop in order to grip the handle posi-: - ,- ,, ~0~"35~0 tion. Thus muscle strain in the back is avoided.
Also shown in Figures 3a, 3b, 3c and 3d a series of orientations for the hand truck when it is used to grip a patio stone 17 which is closely bounded by other patio stones 18, 19. Removal of a stone in such a posi-tion is normally frustrated because of the difficulty in obtaining and maintaining a grip on the patio stone while supplying sufficient force to lift the stone away from the adjacent stones. With the device according to the present invention, the difficulties disappear because the gripping means can reach down between adjacent stones and, when the grip handle 15 is turned, the gripping arm 16 lies under the stone. Meanwhile the support flange 7 slides against the opposite edge of the stone as shown in Figure 3a. The hand truck is then rotated to a position shown in Figure 3b by lifting and rotating the handle portion 3a which in this position rests at a substantial height above the ground and thus the user need not bend over to lift the load. The truck is then rotated through an orientation shown in 3c to a second orientation shown in 3d. In this second orientation the handle position 3b is held sufficiently high above the ground surface by handle position 3a which contacts ths ground, so that the user can, without stooping, take hold of the handle position 3b and either pull or push the truck to a desired location. Also the user can push the truck against a row ~ of slabs standing on edge and slide under the slab while the truck is in - the upright position shown in Figure 2.
The gripping means 12 can be adjusted to any position according to the size of the slab or stone to be moved. Of course the truck can be used to move objects other than slabs or patio stones and, if the object is very bulky, a strap can be used to hold the object against the first portion of the cart.

106'~5~i0 hand truck according to the present invention provides a convenient and sturdy mearls for conveying a heavy load. The user never need lift the heavy load while in a stooped position and thus back strain is avoided. The large wheel means allows ease in moving the heavy load over soft or uneven terrain and the gripping means allows a slab to be removed from a position tightly adja-cent other slabs in a patio which has become uneven and needs to be realigned.

Claims (14)

THE EMBODIMENTS OF THE INVENTION IN WHICH AN EXCLUSIVE
PROPERTY OR PRIVILEGE IS CLAIMED ARE DEFINED AS FOLLOWS:
1. A hand truck comprising a frame member having a first elongated portion, a first end of which is affixed to a carrier platform and from the second end of which angularly extends an elongated handle and a second portion of said frame member affixed adjacent to the first end of the said first portion and extending adjacent to said end of said handle remote from said first portion, wheel support means mounted adjacent to said first end of said first portion and a wheel means, which, in the axial direction, is large relative to its circumference and which is axially connected to said wheel support means, wherein said wheel support means is behind said carrier plat-form, on the same side of said first elongated portion as is the second elongated portion.
2. A hand trunk as defined in claim 1 wherein said carrier platform comprises a support member and a support flange substantially orthogonal thereto.
3. A hand truck as defined in claim 2 wherein said wheel support means are affixed to said support member which is fastened adjacent said first end of said first portion of said frame member.
4. A hand truck as defined in claim 1 wherein one end of said second portion is affixed to and extends in lapped manner partially along said first end of said first portion.
5. A hand truck as defined in claim 1 wherein said handle is substan-tially orthogonal to said first portion of said frame member.
6. A hand truck as defined in either claim 1 or 5 wherein said frame member and said handle are unitary.
7. A hand truck as defined in any one of claims 1, 2 or 3 wherein said frame member and said handle are generally triangular in shape.
8. A hand truck as defined in claim 1 wherein said wheel means comprises a drum-like wheel.
9. A hand truck as defined in claim 1 further including at least one opening through said first portion of said frame member and including adjust-able gripping means adapted to be retained in said at least one opening.
10. A hand truck as defined in claim 8 wherein at least said one opening comprises an elongated slot adjacent a plurality of notches adapted to receive said gripping means.
11. A hand truck as defined in either claim 8 or 9 wherein said gripping means includes a shaft, a grip handle at one end of said shift, a retaining means adapted to retain said gripping means in said at least one opening and a gripping arm at the other end of said shaft.
12. A hand truck as defined in any one of claims 1, 8 or 9 further including a pad joined to said first portion of said frame member, said pad adapted to prevent marring of objects carried by the hand truck.
13. A hand truck comprising a carrier platform affixed to a frame member, wheel support means affixed to and behind said carrier platform and a wheel means, which, in the axial direction, is large relative to its circumference and which is axially connected to said wheel support means, a first and a second handle position along said frame member remote from said wheel support means, the first handle position being at a substantial height generally above the second handle position when the second handle position lies on the ground while the hand truck is in a first position and the second handle position being at a substantial height generally above the first handle position when the first handle position lies on the ground while the hand truck is in a second position.
14. A hand truck as defined in claim 13 wherein said wheel means comprises a drum-like wheel and further including adjustable gripping means and at least one opening in said frame member said at least one opening adapted to receive and retain said adjustable gripping means.
