Abstract

ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE
This invention relates to an improved device for recording, comparing and displaying the growth of different members and generations of a family over a period of years.
The device has an elongated base member which is mounted on a suitable wall. The base member has a vertically extending groove which slidably receives a rearwardly extending tongue portion of a slide member. The slide member also has a forwardly extending arm portion, wing portions which extend laterally across the face of the base member, and an upwardly extending tree-shaped portion. The family name or family tree is entered on the tree-shaped portion of the slide member. A child stands against the wall in front of the device and the slide member is moved downwardly along the base member until the arm portion contacts the top of the child's head. The slide member is held in this position and a horizontal line is then drawn on the front face of the base member along one of the wing portions of the slide member and the name of the child and the date is then inserted on the top of the line. This is done periodically over a number of years for different members of the family. The children of one generation of the family may be recorded and compared on one side of the groove and the children of the next generation recorded and compared on the other side. When the record is complete, the apparatus provides an accurate historical record of the family's growth patterns over the generations used and a very interesting display which may be hung in a prominent position in one's home.

Description

6~ 33 1This invention relates generally to devices for recording the height of children and more particularly to a wall suspended growth recordal and display device whereon the growth of all the members of a family may be recorded over A
period of years.
There has been a recent awakening of concern for family background and information. This, coupled with the widespread practice of measuring and then separately recording the height of growing children, has provided a need for a device whereby the growth patterns of all of the members of a family for two or more generations may be permanently recorded displayed and compared.
In the past, it has been well known to measure the height of a person using slidable and pivotable arm devices and i~ has also been known to record heights using charts and ;other relatively complicated appartus. However, these previous devices have not provided a ~imple means of recording and comparing the growth patterns of different members of a family over two or more generations which then forms an at~ractive display for the family home. Nor have they provided, on the same apparatus, a means to record the family tree.
IAccordingly, it is an object of the present invention to at least partially overcome these disadvantages by providlng an attractive wall suspended family tree and growth recordal and display device upon which the heights of different me~bers of a family may he recorded at different time intervals to form an interesting display.
To~this end, in one of its aspects, the invention provides a wall suspended growth recordal and display device for recording and comparing the height of children over a per1od :: .

~69zg3 1 of yaars comprising an elongated base member h~ving means for mounting at a predetermined elevation on a suitable wall, the base member having a flat front face interrupted by a vertically extending groove having a uniform cross-section, and a slide member having a rearwardly extending tongue portion slidably engaged in the groove in the base :member, a forwardly extending arm portion, and at least one wing portion extending laterall.y across the face of the base member, the arm portion and the wing portions having coplanar lower surfaces, whereby the height of a child may be recorded at any point in time by lower-ing the slide member until the arm portion thereof contacts the child's head and then with the slide member in this position drawing a line along the lower surface of the wing portion on one side of the face of the base member.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description taken together with the accompanying drawings in which:

Figure 2 is a rear perspective view of the same embodiment;
Figure 3 is a cross-sectional view through the base member of the device shown in Figures 1 and 2;

Reference is first made to Figure 1 which shows a growth recordal device 10 having an elongated base member 12 and a slide member 14. The base member 12 has a nail or hook receiving aperture 16 near its top end and a flat rear surface 18 which rests against the wall when the base member is hung on a nail in the wall. The base member 12 has rounded edges to provide a decorative appearance and a flat front face 20 which is interrupted by vertically extending groove 22. The groove 22 has a uniform cross-section which tapers inwardly towards the front except for an enlarged portion 24 at the top. As may i clearly be seen in Figure 4, the base member 12 is formed of an upper portion 26 and a lower portion 28 which may be easily manually assembled by inserting dowels 30 in holes 32 and then applying longitudinal force until the two portions 26, 28 are in-abutment. The base member ~ay be easily dissassembled by reversing this procedure. This two-piece structure grsatly facilitates storage, packing and shipping of the device.
The slide member 14 is formed of two parts which frictionally interfit (as seen in Figure 6) to provide rearwardly extending tongue portion 34, forwardly extending arm portion 36, laterally extending wing portions 38, and upwardly extending tree-shaped portion 40. As may be seen, the tongue portion 34 is tapered inwardly towards the front to be matingly received in slot 42 in tho tree-shaped portion 40 and tapered groove 22 in ~ -~

~9Zg3 the base member 12. When assembled, the slide member 14 is a rigid structure which may be slid up and down along the face 20 of the base member 12 aEter the tongue portion 34 i9 inserted into the groove 22 through the enlarged portion 24. When assembled, the lower surface 44 of the arm portion 36 is flush and coplanar with the lower surfaces 46 of the wing portions 38.
The tree-shaped portion 40 of the slide member 14 is provided with space 48 which may show either the family name or preferably a simplified form of the family tree. Additionally, lists of family members may be entered on the rear surface 18 of ,the base member 12. In the preferred embodiment, the base member 12 and the slide member 14 are both formed of a suitable soft wood, preferably pine although it is apparent that they may be formed of other materials such as plastics having suitable structural characteristics and a pleasing appearance.
In use, the base member 12 is hung on a nail or hook - projecting from a wall (not shown). The nail extends through aperture 16 thereby supporting the base member 12 with its rear surface 18 against the wall. In order that the recordal device be portable, to provide uniformity between locations, in this i embodiment the nail or hook will be located at a height of 83 inches from the floor and this dimension will be marked on the rear surface 18 of the base member 12. The slide member 14 is then assembled and the rearwardly extending tongue portion 34 inserted through the enlarged portion 24 of groove 22. The child to be measured is then stood against the wall in front of the base member 12 and the slide member 14 moved downwardly until the forwardly extending arm portion 36 contacts the child's head. The slide member 14 is held in this position and a pencil, pen or other suitable marker is used to draw a line along the .

~69;~93 1 lower surface 46 of one of the wing portions 38. This line provides a record of the actual height of the child as of the particular date measured. The child's name and the date is thenwritten in adjacent the line and by doing this periodically over a period of years, a record of the growth of the child is formed. The growth records for al:L of the children of a first generation of the family may be recorded on ona side of the front face 20 of the base member 12 and the records for the children of a second generation of the family may be recorded on the other side. Different coloured lines may then be used for additionaI future generations to form a complete record of family growth patterns comparisons and a very interesting display.
If the family reaches a point in time at which records are no longer being made, the apparatus may be displayed in a prominent position in the family home.
As shown in Figure 7, the receipt of the tongue portion 34 of the slide member 14 in the groove 22 of the base member 12 is such that the slide member 14 may be moved upwardly and downwardly along the front of the base member 12.
However, if the slide member is tilted slightly forwardly (as shown), it engages the base member at that position to prevent it from falling downwardly under the influence of gravity.
Thus, after the slide member is moved into position whan a measurement is taken, the child may step forwardly out of the way and the slide member 14 may be tilted forwardly to hold it in that position until the appropriate line is drawn on the front surface 20 of the base member 12 Although the disclosure describes and illustrates a preferred embodiment of the growth recordal device, it is to be understood that the invention is not restricted to this particular embodi]ment.
