Abstract
ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE
A flexible tube injector is mounted for limited vertical movement within a frame and a piston and cylin-der assembly is operatively connected between the frame and the injector and is operatively connected to a pres-sure gauge which may be calibrated to read pounds pres-sure of thrust and/or pounds pressure of tension. As the injector applies downward pressure on the flexible drill tubing, the pressure is indicated on the gauge so that the optimum drilling pressure is maintained and ex-cess pressure is avoided. When withdrawing the drilling string, the tension measuring gauge enables the operator to ensure that the drill bit is being withdrawn cleanly and is not jamming within the drill hole.

Description
BACKGROUND OF T~IE INVENTION
This invention relates to new and ~seful improve-ments in devices for measuring the thrust of a drill bit and/or the tension on the drill string wALen same is being withdrawn.
Conventionally, the drill string consists of a string of pipe extending downwardly and having a bit on the lower end thereof, said bit being either of a rotatable type or of a percussive type, In both cases, the rota-tional movement is generated at the surface and the drill str1ng rotates.

strings, the power for the drill bit is carried on a lower end of the flexible tubing which does not rotate but is fed downwardly into the drill hole and withdrawn therefrom by means of an injector, it being understood that the flexible tubing is mounted upon a reel and is injected by the injector which engages over the upper end of the drill hole.
With the conventional tubing string, it is rela-tively easy to ascertain the thrust on the drill bit be-cause of the solid nature of the drill stringO
However, with the flexibl~ tubing string, it is difficult to measure the thrust on the bit and also to measure the tension in the flexible drill string when same is being withdrawn~
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

One aspect of the invention consis~s of means to : :~
measure the compression and tension of the drill tubing and hence the thrust upon the bit when drilling and the tension in the tubing when withdrawing, said means inclu-ding at least one fluid piston and c~linder assembl~
operatively connected be~ween said injector and said frame and pressure indicating means operatively connected to said fluid piston and cylinder assembly.
Another aspect enables ~he injector mechanism to be mounted for relative vertical rloating movement so that both the compression and tension within the drill string can be measured accurately at all times.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the character herewithin described which en-sures that the optimum thrust is present upon the drill bit and prevents undue thrust from being used which could not only damage the drill bit but can reduce the speed of drilling.

The tubing injector, which is conventional, in-cludes a pair of spaced and parallel side plates 13 and a pair of tubing engaging drive chain assemblies indicated by reference character 14 engaging around pulley assemblies 15 and including the opposed vertical rungs 16 centrally of the casing 28 formed by the plate 13 and assemblies 14, between which the tubing 11 is squeezed for upward and down-ward movement depending upon the direction of motion of the chain assemblies 14. Hydraulic motors (not illustrated) drive these chains via drive shaft 17 and main drive chain 18.
This assembly is situated within a support frame :
collectively designated 19 which consists of a pair of spa ced and parallel longitudinally extending vertical members 20 extending upwardly from cross beams 21 which in turn are supported upon I-beams 22 shown in Figures 1 and 2.

members 20 and supports a pair of fluid piston and cylin-der assemblies collectively designated 24 one upon each end thereof. Although in the present drawings, two such piston and cylinder assemblies are shown, nevertheless it will be appreciated that the frame could be modified so :

These piston and cylinder assemblies 24 include cylinders 25 which are pivotally supported from lugs 26 depending from the cross bar or member 23.
Brackets 27 are secured to the casing 28 of the tubing injector 13 and forked ends or clevises 28A situated on the outer ends of the piston rods 29, are pivotally con-nected to these brackets by means of pivot pins 30 thus sus pending the injection assembly 13 from the cross member 23 of the stationary frame 19.
Figure 3 shows one embodiment of the connections between the piston and cylinder assemblies 24. They are connected in series one with the other by means of upper conduits 31 and lower conduits 32, the first conduits being on one side of the piston 32 within the cylinder 25 and the other being on the other side of the piston.

A cross bar 34 is secured to one vertical frame member 20 adjacent the lower end thereof and extends upon either side, parallel to the front face of the casing 28 -of the injection assembly 13 and bumpers 35 extend out-wardly from this face of the casing on either side of the vertical member 20 and above and below the cross bar 33 and engage the cross bar thus limiting the vertical floating movement of the injection assembly 13 relative to the frame.
In operation, and assuming that the tubing 11 ~-~
is being urged downwardly within tlle dril]. hole, a drill lS bit (not illustrated) together with a source of power there-fore (also not illustrated), is secured to the lower end of the flaxible tubing string 11.

invention, details have been deleted for clarity.

~hen the drill bit reaches the bottom of the drill hole, pressure is applied by the drive chai~ 1~
and drilling commences. Downward pressure upon the drill string relieves the weight of the injection assembly 13 and`is indicated by the pressure gauge 31A so that the desired optimum pressure can r~adily be main~ained and excessive pressure avoided.
When it is desired to withdraw the flexible drill tubing 11, the drive chains 14 are reversed and the drill bit]ifted. The tension on the drill string once again will react on the weight of the injection assembly 13 and this tension will show up on the pressure gauge 32A.
Although both pressure gauges 31A and 32A may be graduated in pounds per square inch, nevertheless it is ]5 desirable that these be trans]ated to pounds of thrust or equivalent so that direct readings can be taken of both the downward thrust and t:he upward tension within ~-the flexible drill tubing 11.

extraction and prevents undesirable tension from being applied to the drill tubing 11 which may result in break-age occurring.
