Abstract
ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE
Sheet material is provided with an elongate raised portion, the elongate raised portion comprising a ridge formed in the sheet material, a strip fastened to the sheet material and extending along the top of the ridge to form a rib, and cord stitching which extends lengthwise along the strip and extends through the thickness of the sheet material on either side of the strip and, on the side of the sheet material opposite to the strip, from one side of the strip to the other. The elongate raised portion is primarily intended to be decorative. Such sheet material is especially useful for forming at least part of the upper of a shoe.

Description
iOS;Z092 The present invention relates to footwear and, in particular to boots and shoes, hereinafter referred to, for convenience, as shoes.
It is known to provide a rib on the upper of a shoe --(for example on the toe of the shoe) for decorative or aesthetic purposes. Such a rib has hitherto been formed by cutting a slit `
in a piece of sheet material forming or intended to form at least part of the upper of a shoe and bringing together the undersides of the portions of the piece of sheet material alongside either edge of the slit thereby causing these portions to stand up relative to the remainder of the sheet and thereafter sewing the upstanding portions together with a line of stitching which passes through the entire thic~ness of the upstanding portions, i.e. from the upper side of the sheet material on one side of the slit to thq upper side of the sheet material on the other side of the slit. Cutting the slit in the sheet material inevitably weakens the sheet material.
Alternatively the undersides of the edge portions of two pieces of sheet material are brought together causing these portions to stand up relative to the remainder of the sheets and the upstand-ing portions are sewn together with a line of stitching which passes through the entire thickness of the upstanding portions.
After forming the rib, a tape may be stitched on the underside of the sheet material along the length of the rib to strengthen the sheet material. ~-In the above described known method, the sewing -operations are difficult and require skilled labour.
According to a first aspect of the present invention, there is provided a method of providing an elongate raised portion on sheet material, comprising fastening a strip of material to one side of the sheet material to form a rib and stitching the sheet material with cord stitching which extends lengthwise along - 1 - ~

the strip and extends through the thickness of the sheet material on either side of the strip and, on the side of the piece of sheet material opposite to the strip, from one side of the strip to the other thereby to cause the sheet material to form a ridge along the top of which the strip extends.
In accordance with a second aspect of the present invention, there is provided sheet material provided with an elongate raised portion, the elongate raised portion comprising a ridge formed in the sheet material, a strip fastened to the sheet material and extending along the top of the ridge to form a rib, and cord stitching which extends lengthwise along the strip and extends through the thickness of the sheet material on either side of the strip and, on the side of the sheet material opposite to the strip, from one side of the strip to the other.
Preferably the strip is attached to the piece of sheet material by a single line of stitching extending along the length of the strip.
The sheet material is preferably natural or synthetic leather.
The strip is preferably formed of natural or synthetic leather.
The sheet material may be shaped as at least part of an upper of a shoe e.g. the sheet material may be shaped as a ~~
vamp and/or quarter.
The invention is furthèr described beIow by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a shoe according to the invention; and 3Q Fig. 2 is a partly sectional view and partly perspective view of a portion of the upper of the shoe shown in Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, and in particular to Fig. 2, ':
10~0~2 in a method according to the invention, a leather strip 1 is fastened to the upper surface of a piece of sheet material 2, conveniently natural or synthetic leather, by a line of stitches 3. Then the sheet material is cord stitched. The cord stitching -comprises two threads each of which extend through the thickness of the sheet material on either side of the strip and a thread 5 which extends from one side of the strip to the other on the side of the sheet material opposite to the strîp and is inter-locked with the threads 4. The cord stitching causes the sheet material to form a ridge beneath the strip.
The exposed portions of the threads 4 on the upper side of the sheet material provide an aesthetically pleasing effect and since the sheet material is continuous in the region of the ~
ridge it is unnecessary to strengthen it by sewing a tape beneath the ridge.
As shown in Fig. 2, the sheet material 2 forms at least the vamp 6 of a shoe 7, the strip 1 and the ridge extending, in this case, centrally of the vamp.
