Abstract

ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE:
The invention is to a snowshoe harness comprising a member made of elastomeric sheet material. The member has a central foot opening, a rear heel-engaging portion back of the opening, and a front instep-engaging portion in front of the opening. A fastening portion is provided on each side of the instep-engaging portion. The harness is attached flat on the upper surface of a snowshoe solely at the fastening portions.
The invention is also to a showshoe incorporating the above harness.

Description

1~)3976~
~ his inventlon is directed toward an improved snowshoe harness and a snowshoe employing the improved harne~s~
It has long been an objective to provide ~n~wshoes with a harness ~hich is simple to get in and ont of, and which i8 also simple in construction and relatively inexpensive. U.S.
Patents 2,323,9359 G.M. ~intamaki et Al in~entor, issued July 13, 1943; 2~511~087~ AoA~ Villemur i~ventor, issued June 13, 1950; and 3,596,374, W.M. Covington inventor, issued Augu~t 3, 1971 provide examples oi such simple harnesses. These known impli~ied harnes~es are generally constructed ~rom sheet material.
Ho~ever these known harnesses ha~e disadvantages. ~hey generally require a relatively large amount of sheet material.
Nore importantly, the finished9 attached harness pro~ects above the ~urface of the anowshoe. ~his makes it difficult to stack or store a pair or a plurality o~ harnessed snowshoes and wastes ~pace.
.
It i8 therefore a purpose of the present invention to provide an improved snowshoe harne~s which is simple in construc-tion. It is a iurther purpose of the pre~ent inventio~ to provide a snowshoe harnes~ which requires relati~ely little material making it relatively inexpen~ive in oonstruction. It ie ~nother purpose Or the present invention to provide a snowshoe harness whi¢h is easy to use. It iB Btill another purpose of the present invention to provide a snowshoe harness which ia ~lat and compact when mounted on the snowæhoe thereby taking up little space.
~ he present invention provides a ~nowshoe harness wh~ch comprises a member Or elastomer1c sheet material~ The member normally lie8 ilat to the top sur~ace of a ~now~hoe and yet i~ so constructed and attached that a person can readily ~lip his ~oot through a~ opening in the member and bet~een the member and snowshoe to don the harnes~.

1~39764 ~ he invention i~ particularly directed toward a snowshoe harnes~ uhich eompriseæ a member o~ elastomeric sheet material having a ~ubsta~tiallg central, longit~dinal-extending ~oot opening~ The sheet member has a rear heel-engaging portion in back Or the opening and a front in~tep-engaging portion in front o~ the opening, A fastening portion is provided on each ~ide Or the instep-engaging portion to provide the sole means by which the harness is attached to a snowshoe.
~he invention is also directed to a s~owshoe having .
~0 the above described harness attached flat to it~ upper surface.
~he invention will now be described in detail having reference to the acco~panyine drawings in which: ~

~he s~owshoe harness 1 of the present invention compriseæ ~:
a member 3 o~ ela~tomeric sheet material. The member 3 prefer-ably is ~ade o~ rubber, and can in fact be made irom any stretQhable materlal ~he member 3, as ~hown in Fig. 3, is prererably, generally triangular in sh~pe~ and more partiaularly, generally isosoele~ triangular in ~hapeO ~he member 3 has a substantiallg oentral~ longitudinally-extending opening 5. me opening 5 i~ :

1~39764 sheet member which are equal angularly and that the heel-engaging portion 9 is generally located in the third corner~ Perforations 15 are provided in each ~a~tening portion 13 ~or use in ~a~tening the harness 1 to a sno~shoe.
The harne~s 1 is attached generally centrally to a ¦
~no~shoe 17, a6 shown in Fig. 1 and more particularly to the ~ebbing 19 laced to the snowshoe frame 21, by laces or cords 23 threaded through the per~orations 15 and tied sbout webbing l9o . .
When faxtened to the showshoe, the harness 1 lies flat on top of the webbing 19.
~o put the snowshoe 17, with the attached harness 1 on, ths wearer first puts his booted *oot ~ through the opening 5, ~ith his toe pointing toward the heel portion 9 and away ~rom instep portion 11 as shown in ~igo 2A. This permits him to work his $oot into the opening 5 in the harness ~hile the harne~æ 1 iB held in place by the cords 230 Once the wearer has his foot ~ through the opening 5, he rotates his foot 180 under harness 1, as shown in ~igo 2B to place his toe between the iastening portions 13 and under the instep portion 11.
~he instep portion 11 is stretched between the ~astening poxtion~ to permit the toe and instep part Or the ~oot ~ to slide under it. ~he rree front edge 25 oi the harness bet~een the fastening portions 13 will rise. ~he heel portion 9 now ; engages the heel oi the wearer~s ~oot, as ~own in Figo 2C and, due to the elasticlty o~ the harness, tends to hold the foot in placeO It will be apparent that the wearer~s heel, when hi~
~ rOot i~ in the harness, is free to be raised $rom the ~now~hoe ;~ to permit proper use of the s~owshoe while the har~ess retains the ioot in place.
The harness 1 i8 pre~erably provided with t~o reinior~

by adhesive or other suitable meansO The patches 31 can be ordinary tire patches made from suitable elastomeric or elasto-meric and fabric material. The perforation~ 15 extend through the patches.
A ha~dling tab 33 can be provided on the harness 1 extending rear-~ardly ~rom the heel engaging portion 9. The tab 33 can be gra~ped to facilitate donning or remo~al of the harness on or o~f the wearer~s ioot. .~

Claims (2)

The embodiments of the invention in which an exclusive property or privilege is claimed, are defined as follows:
1. A snowshoe harness comprising a member of elastomeric sheet material, substantially in the shape of an isosceles triangle when in flat condition, the sheet member having a generally central rectangular foot opening with its longitudinal axis disposed along a bisector of the angle formed by the one corner portion of the triangular member, which is not equal angularly to the two remaining corner portions, a rear heel-engaging and handling tab portion in the sheet member in the back of said opening and defined by said one corner portion, a front instep-engaging portion defined by the portion of said sheet member intermediate the other two corner portions and located at the front of the opening, said other two corner portions constituting fastening portions on each side of the instep-engaging portion, each fastening portion having perforations extending through the sheet member, and cord means threaded through the perforations and adapted to be tied about the webbing of the snowshoe to adjustably maintain said fastening portions flat against said webbing.
2, A harness as claimed in claim 1, wherein a reinforcement patch of sheet material is attached to each fastening portion of the sheet member.
