Abstract
An anti-inflammatory preparation particularly effective in relieving and curing pain originating from burns, sunburn, insect bites and abrasions. The preparation is applied topically as an ointment or lotion and consists essentially of limewater (CaCO3) and edible oils selected from olive oil; safflower oil, soya oil, corn oil and cottonseed oil.
Description

The prcsc~nt invcntion rc~t~s to a pharmac~llt:i~c preparation for relieving and healing symptoms produced by burns, scraping of the skin and insect bites.
Many emollient and anti-inflammatory preparations already are on the market. These range from varioussteroid derivatives to calamine-type lotions. ~s regards the former and related compounds, some produce undesirable or allergenic side effects. Moreover, they are generally quite expensive.
The latter are not too effective where the irritation is severe.
The present invention provides a pharmaceutical composition for topical application against irritations and inflammations caused by various conditions.
According to the present invention there is provided a topical preparation for treating burns and other skin irrita-tions comprising a mixture containing 40 to 60 per cent by weight of an edible oil selected from the group of olive oil; safflower oil, soya oil; corn oil and cottonseed oil and the balance calcium carbonate.
The composition of the invention thus suitably comprises a mixture of an edible oil and lime water. Various pharmaceutically acceptable inert excipients can be mixed with the two active ingredients as required.
The lime water is made by stirring calcium carbonate in water in any proportion desired. Where the present composition is to be dispensed as a paste or ointment, very little water will be used to slurry the calcium carbonate so that when it is finally mixed with the edible oil there will result a paste-like substance. The preferred oil is olive oil.
The olive oil used is commercially available as ordinary cooking oil. Its typical analysis is: mixed glycerides of oleic acid 83.5%; of palmitic acid 9.4%; of linoleic acid ~`' - 1 - .

4.0~,; of ste.lric acicl 2 0%; of arachidic acicl 0.9~ together with up to 0.7~ of squalene and about 0.2~ of phytosterol arld tocopherols.
The composition o~ the invention will contain from 40 to 60 percent by weicJht of oil, the balance lime water. A
preEerred composition which has given excellent results contains equal amounts by welght of olive oil and lime water.
The edible oil may also be safflower oil, soya oil, corn oil or cottonseed oil.
As above indicated, the composition may be in the form of a paste or ointment (together with up to 10% of petroleum jelly to improve its adherence to the skin) or it may be in liquid form with, if needed, a liquid vehicle such as non-toxic alcohols, glycerine or the like.
The preparation has been found to give cooling and soothing relief in minutes in cases of sunburn. With other burns, the preparation does not shrink the skin in the burn area thus preventing unsightly scars. It also does not bind joints.
The composition is applied ot the affected skin area as directed by the prescribing physician. Generally two or three applications per day constitute a practical dosage, for humans and warm-blooded animals.
