A Fig. 2 mostra um comparativo dos valores de corrente normalizados por massa de Platina (A gpf1 ) obtidos na eletro-oxidação de etanol em meio ácido e em meio alcalino a 0,5V para os eletrocatalisadores Pt/C e PtBi/C (razão atômica Pt:Bi de 50:50).Fuel cells have proven to be an interesting and promising alternative in solving the problems of high efficiency clean electric power generation, and they present great possibilities for future energy conversion. Low temperature fuel cells generally operate by oxidizing high purity hydrogen at the anode and reducing oxygen at the cathode. In low operating temperature cells, anodic and cathodic reactions are catalyzed by platinum. Oxygen can be obtained directly from air, while hydrogen is obtained mainly by the catalytic reforming process of a hydrogen-rich primary fuel (renewable or not). In the reform process, a certain amount of carbon monoxide is formed as a byproduct of the reaction. Carbon monoxide, even in small amounts, leads to poisoning of the platinum surface as it strongly adsorbs on the platinum surface (chemical adsorption). Thus, some ppm of CO in the hydrogen feed leads to a sharp drop in cell performance. In addition, in certain applications hydrogen also has some operational and infrastructure drawbacks. Hydrogen compression, storage and distribution require relatively sophisticated and costly technologies, making it difficult to use this fuel, particularly in certain high-impact applications such as vehicle use. Thus, the use of alcohols directly as fuel in cells (DAFC) has been widely considered. Methanol is the most studied fuel and also the one with the best results. However, the complete electro-oxidation reaction of methanol is quite slow as a result of the formation of strongly adsorbed intermediates such as carbon monoxide (COads). · Oxidation of these intermediates to CO2 requires adsorption of oxygen containing species (OH, H2O). Platinum alone is not sufficiently active for the oxidation of COads to CO2 and it is therefore necessary to use alternative materials such as carbon-supported platinum-ruthenium alloys. (Linardi, New Chemistry, 2000, 25, 470; Gonzalez, New Chemistry, 2000, 23, 262). A non-limiting alternative to the invention is the use of ethanol, which is a renewable and attractive fuel for use directly in these cells. In addition, ethanol is much less toxic than methanol and can be produced in large quantities from renewable sources. However, direct oxidation of ethanol in low operating temperature fuel cells is even more complicated than that of methanol, as it also involves breaking the carbon-carbon bond of the ethanol molecule. Therefore, there is a need to find more efficient electrocatalysts for anodic ethanol oxidation for both acid and alkaline fuel cells. For the low temperature operating cell operating in acid medium (PEMFC - Proton Exchage Membrane Fuel Ce 11) Pt and Sn based electrocatalysts have been the most active (Antonili, J. Power Sources 2010, 195, 3450; Grandson, J Power Sources 2007, 166, 87). Recently, several studies have shown that the activity of Pt and Bi-based electrocatalysts in the direct oxidation of alcohols in acidic media was superior to that of Pt (Brandalize, Ionics 2009, 15, 743 and Int. J. Electrochem. Sci. 2010, 5, 39; Roychowdhury, Chem. Mater. 2005, 17, 5871; Demarconnay, J. Electroanal. Chem. 2007, 601, 169; DiSalvo, WO2004012290-A2, US2004126267-A1, EP1573841-A2) for dealing with the use of platinum and bismuth electrocatalysts in alkaline fuel cells using ethanol directly as fuel. In the following the invention will be described with reference to the following related figures, in which: Fig. 1 shows the X-ray diffractograms of Pt and Bi containing electrocatalysts and prepared with different atomic ratios Pt: Bi. Fig. 2 shows a comparison of the platinum mass normalized current values (A gpf1) obtained in the electro-oxidation of ethanol in acidic and alkaline medium at 0.5V for the Pt / C and PtBi / C electrocatalysts (ratio (Pt: Bi 50:50).
In the present invention the electrooxidation of ethanol was studied using the Pt / C and PtBi / C electrocatalysts, which were prepared using sodium borohydride (NaBFfi) as reducing agent as follows: chloroplatinic acid (FfjPtCló.óFFO) and bismuth nitrate (Βΐ (Νθ3) 3 · 5Η2θ) in the appropriate ratio were dissolved in a water / 2-propanol (v / v) solution and the carbon support was added. Thereafter, the resulting mixture was stirred at 25 to 60 ° C for 1 to 60 min. An aqueous sodium borohydride solution was added (atomic ratio BH4 ': metals ranging from del: 10: 1) to this mixture, which was stirred for 1 to 120 min. Finally, the mixture was filtered and the solid (electrocatalyst) was dried at 25 to 100 ° C for 1 to 3 h. The formed phases were investigated by X-ray diffraction (Fig. 1). The activity of the electrocatalysts thus prepared was tested for direct oxidation of ethanol in acidic and alkaline media (Fig. 2), and was studied using a porous thin layer electrode, which was prepared as follows: addition of 20 mg of the electrocatalyst and three drops of Teílon solution in 50 mL of water. The resulting mixture was placed in an ultrasound system for 10 min under stirring. After this time the mixture was filtered on a FIAWP04700 filter. The still damp mixture was then removed from the filter and transferred to the porous thin layer electrode (working electrode), which was coupled to a one-chamber electrochemical cell containing an Ag / AgCl reference electrode and an electrode counter electrode. Platinum platinum. The experiments were carried out under a nitrogen atmosphere: acid medium - using a solution of 0.5 mol L'1 H2SO4 and 1.0 mol L'1 methanol with a scanning rate of 10 mV s "1; alkaline medium: using a 1.0 mol L'1 KOH solution and 1.0 mol L'1 ethanol with 10 mV s'1 sweep rate.
Coat. Tech. 2007, 201, 5330). Mater. 2007, 19, 4545).The X-ray diffractograms of the Pt / C, Βί / C and PtBi / C electrocatalysts with different atomic ratios (Fig. I) show the presence of a broad peak at approximately 25 ° which comes from the carbon support. The Pt / C and PtBi / C electrocatalysts have five diffraction peaks at approximately 20 = 40 °, 47 °, 67 °, 82 ° and 87 ° which are associated with the plans (111), (200), (220), (311) and (222), respectively, and are characteristic of the platinum centered face (cfc) cubic structure and its alloys. The diffractogram of the Bi / C electrocatalyst shows the hexagonal structure of Bi metal (Wang, Surf. Coat. Tech. 2007, 201, 5330). For the PtBi / C electrocatalysts with atomic ratios of 70:30 and 50:50, besides the Pt cfc phase, other peaks can also be attributed to the presence of a mixture of the BiPt and Bi2Pt phases, being the Bi2Pt phase. predominant (Dawood, Chem. Mater. 2007, 19, 4545).
The results of Fig. 2 show that the current value obtained in alkaline medium for the PtBi / C electrocatalyst is about seven times higher than the current value obtained for the Pt / C electrocatalyst, whereas in acid medium this increase was only twice. It is also observed that the current value obtained for the PtBi / C electrocatalyst (12 A gpt "1) in alkaline medium is about five times higher than the value obtained in acid medium (2.5 A gpt'1), showing an excellent performance of the PtBi / C electrocatalyst in alkali ethanol electro-oxidation.
