Abstract

Processes for the preparation of chemically modified celluloses or lignocellulosic fibers for the removal of metallic lions in liquid solution. The present invention relates to processes for preparing materials from cellulose or any lignocellulosic fiber for complexing metal lions in solution and thus decontaminating solutions by such metals. The four materials are prepared by modifying the hydroxyl groups present in cellulose or lignocellulosic fibers with a cyclic carboxylic acid anhydride such as succinic anhydride to obtain Material I and ethylenediaminetetraacetic dianhydride (EDTA) to obtain of Material II. When the initial fiber is treated with aqueous NaOH (mercerization) solution there is an increase in chemical modification with the anhydride used. Subsequently, the carboxylic acid functions introduced in Material I are used to anchor polyamines to obtain Material III containing amine functions. Material III is treated with alkyl halides to obtain Material IV. The obtained new materials I, II and III are capable of adsorbing metallic cations present in various liquid solutions and thus decontaminating solutions by such metals. The new Material iv is capable of adsorbing oxyions present in liquid solutions.
