A Digit Type (TOD) in the Generic Digit Parameter (GDP) for a User Part (ISUP) command of the Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) can be used to perform the NCT. A listing of Switch IDs (SIDs) from the source subscriber switch to the destination subscriber switch is provided so that routing inefficiencies can be discovered. In one embodiment, an Initial Address Message (IAM) is transmitted with a TOD Network Call Tracking on GDP. The NCT includes the SID of the source switch. Any intermediate switches between the source switch and the target switch likewise append their own SID to the NCT list of SIDs. Finally, the destination switch also adds its SID to the bottom of the NCT list. This NCT list can then be transmitted and displayed for analysis. For example, it can be transmitted in a return message such as the full address message (ACM), the reply message (ANM), call in progress (CPG), or release (REL) back to the originating switch via from the Web. Alternatively, the NCT list can be sent to a Network Management Center.
