The reamer (10) comprises a cutting device for removing material from the socket during rotation of the cutting head. The cutting device comprises a number of relatively long leading cutting edges, each of which extends in a direction from the base to a top of the reamer, and a greater quantity said to be the leading cutting edges of the cutting edges relatively short peripherals, which are located at the base and distributed at angularly spaced intervals around an axis of rotation. The invention also provides a process for implanting a prosthetic component into a bone socket (50). During shaping of the bone socket, an upper portion of the countersink (10) is completely accommodated in the bone socket (50), to the point that a cylindrical inlet portion (52) is formed in the socket. The invention also provides a set that includes a countersink and a prosthesis.
