A method and apparatus for measuring the optical properties of mass samples is provided. A probe laser beam is fed into two subdivisions of the device, a reference subdivision and a measurement subdivision, both of which contain optical fibers to guide the laser lights. The measurement subdivision includes an area of free space to mount a sample to be tested. The probe beam is directed to the sample in the free space. The sample also receives light in the free space, instead of receiving it through the optical fiber, from a second pump laser. The interaction of the sample with the pump laser affects the optical properties of the sample. This change in optical properties can be detected by comparing the output signals from the measurement and reference subdivisions.
