Abstract

Invention Patent: <B> "NETWORK WATERPROOF BARRIER STRUCTURES, PERMEABLE TO THE AIR AND PRODUCTS MADE FROM THE SAME" <D>. The present invention provides a substantially liquid-impermeable, air-permeable barrier structure and products made from it, such as sanitary napkins, underwear liners, incontinence products and diapers. Barrier structure has a porous layer having opposite sides, the porous layer having: a porous substrate with pores, which extend between the opposite sides corresponding to the opposite sides of the porous layer, through which a liquid can pass through the substrate; and particles that are melted on at least one side of the porous substrate in order to restrict the entry of liquid into the pores; wherein the porous layer is resistant to penetration of the liquid when it is contained in an absorbent structure that overlaps next to the porous layer into which the particles are melted and is under a load of one pound per square inch; and wherein the porous layer has a Frazier air permeability value in the range of more than zero about 861 mm ^ 3 ^ / m ^ 2 ^ / min (80 mm ^ 3 ^ / feet ^ 2 ^ / min). A substantially liquid-impermeable, air-permeable barrier structure is distinguished by the fact that the particles that are fused to the porous substrate are predominantly on the surface of the porous substrate rather than mixed and penetrate the depth of the materials that comprise the porous substrate.
