Abstract

The remote location transceiver (340) includes circuits for receiving signals generated by global position system satellites, thereby allowing the go-to location of the remote location transceiver to be determined. The remote location transceiver then transmits signals identifying its geographical location to a base station (268) of the cellular communication system. The base station (268), in turn, accesses information stored in a memory (984) associated with the geographic area in which the transceiver is located. When the stored information includes telephone identification codes for emergency services associated with various areas, the telephone identification code for a more appropriate emergency service is provided to the transceiver, thus allowing a telephone communication link to be made with the emergency service. most appropriate emergency aid.
