Em algumas variações, um processo para preparar uma matéria-prima de biomassa para conversão em um açúcar, um biocombustível, um produto bioquímico ou um biomaterial compreende: fornecer uma matéria-prima de biomassa contendo celulose, hemicelulose e lignina; opcionalmente, introduzir a matéria-prima de biomassa e uma primeira corrente de vapor em uma unidade de aquecimento de biomassa, gerando, por meio disso, uma corrente de biomassa aquecida; introduzir a matéria- prima de biomassa e uma primeira corrente de líquido em uma unidade de adição de líquido, gerando, por meio disso, uma corrente de biomassa úmida, em que a primeira corrente de líquido contém um produto químico de pré-tratamento; introduzir a corrente de biomassa úmida em um transportador mecânico operado para remover fisicamente o líquido da corrente de biomassa úmida, gerando, por meio disso, uma corrente de líquido em excesso que compreende o produto químico de pré- tratamento e uma corrente de descarga de sólido que compreende a matéria-prima de biomassa e o produto químico de pré- tratamento; reciclar pelo menos uma porção da corrente de líquido em excesso para a primeira corrente de líquido; e recuperar ou processar adicionalmente a corrente de descarga de sólido.
