trata-se de sedimento contaminado que é remediado com o uso de um sistema de capeamento de sedimentação que compreende partículas de compósito que têm um núcleo e um revestimento que contém uma composição de estatina. as estatinas são úteis para inibir o crescimento de metanógenos, anaeróbios conhecidos que produzem metano a partir de materiais orgânicos encontrados em sedimentos. a redução na produção de metano evita vários problemas em sistemas de capeamento, inclusive ebulição reduzida que pode romper a capa de barreira, mobilização reduzida e biodisponibilidade de toxinas metiladas para a vida aquática acima da capa.
