Abstract
FROM PEACH PEACH TREE CUTTING WASTE (Bactrisgasipaes ) The use of lignocellulosic agro-industrial residues, discarded during the commercial extraction of peach palm heart, for the production of cellulose nanofibrils by mechanical defibrillation process, is presented as an alternative viable for the destination given to this residue and the addition of technological value, through the formation of a compound related to nanotechnology. This research belongs to the technical field of nanotechnology, nanocellulose production. From the fibers of the outer sheath of the peach palm tree, duly disintegrated and bleached, suspensions of nanofibrils were obtained, with possible application in various areas of science and technology, from physical reinforcement for packaging and composites to even the formulation of medicines and foods. Due to the high potential of the nanoparticles obtained, this process allows the addition of commercial value to a residue that is immunized in large quantities, causing problems for palm heart producers and processors, and may become a product with greater commercial value than the processed palm heart itself. .

Cellulose is a semi-crystalline linear polysaccharide composed of p-D-anhydroglucopyranose units linked through p-1-4 glycosidic bonds and polymeric chains associated through hydrogen bonds forming bundles of fibrils, composed of highly organized crystalline structures and disorderly amorphous. It is the main constituent of wood and most natural fibers such as cotton, linen, hemp, jute, ramie and sisal. This natural polymer represents about a third of plant tissue and is regenerated from photosynthesis. It is also produced by several species of algae and by some species of bacteria, amoebas and fungi.
Although pure cellulose and its derivatives have been widely known and used for over 150 years, in the last decade a renewed interest has arisen, based on a better understanding of its structure, visualizing that macrofibers are composed of smaller entities with greater mechanical strength. , which can be removed under appropriate conditions. During the biosynthesis of cellulose chains, van der Waals force-type bonds and hydrogen bonds between the hydroxyl and oxygen groups of adjacent molecules promote parallel stacking of multiple cellulose chains forming elementary fibrils that will aggregate into larger microfibrils. Depending on their origin, the diameter of these nanofibrils can vary, however, it is generally between 2-20 nm and a few microns in length. Nanofibrils are composed of amorphous and crystalline zones, and can be considered, in fact, as a cord of cellulose crystals connected along the axis of microfibrils by amorphous and disordered domains.
The extraction of cellulose elements at the nanoscale from lignocellulosic fibers is a subject that has been much studied and researched due to the specific characteristics of these nanocomposites, mainly due to the fact that they are extracted from renewable, abundant and low cost sources, in addition to the great reason between surface and volume, high strength and rigidity, low coefficients of thermal expansion, weight and density and also due to its biodegradability. Among the numerous possibilities of application, we highlight the reinforcement of composites for packaging formulation, support structures for tissue engineering, bases for cosmetic applications, filter media, thickening agents and texture modifiers, adsorbent compounds, paper reinforcement, among others. others.
Although a wide variety of methods for the extraction of nanocomposites from wood and natural fibers have already been described and patented, they are basically carried out by two routes: by acid hydrolysis or by mechanical treatment.
Acid hydrolysis promotes transverse cleavage of the non-crystalline portions of cellulose microfibrils, leading to the formation of the so-called cellulose nanocrystals or “whiskers”, which are rod-shaped particles, with diameters ranging from 2-20 nm and length between 100-600 nm. Strong acids, organic or inorganic, are the most used, as described in CN101942102A, CN104762846B, CN106380613A, where the amorphous region of the cellulosic chain was removed by the action of sulfuric acid in concentrations between 60-65%. Less, but also applied, hydrochloric acid can be used in the form of gas (RU2281993) or liquid (JP2014511907A).
Nanocrystals are characterized by their high crystallinity and the colloidal behavior of their aqueous suspensions. They can be easily applied to reinforce polymer matrices; in the synthesis of polymers with liquid-crystalline behavior for electronic components; in enzymatic immobilization in the preparation of biocatalysts; in the medical area helping in the processing of images for the localization of tumors or bacterial cells; in the release of drugs, among others.
In turn, the application of strong shear forces imposed by the mechanical treatment of cellulose fibers allows the extraction of microfibrils and aggregates with a high aspect ratio capable of forming aggregates with extremely entangled chains. Different apparatuses can be used for processing nanofibrillated cellulose, as cited in patent document JP2009298972A; from disc mills (WO2013072559), ball mills, knife mills, refiners (US20140154756A1; US20150368368A1) to high pressure homogenizers (WO2014068196A2).
This type of nanocellulose is known as nanofibrillated cellulose, cellulose nanofibril or just nanocellulose, and has been applied as reinforcement for polymer composites, as reinforcement in paper production, in the cosmetics and food industries as a thickening agent, carrier agent and stabilizer.
The production of cellulosic nanofibrils and their application in nanocomposites has been gaining increasing attention due to the profound improvements generated in their characteristics, such as increased mechanical properties and reduced gas barrier properties. The action of nanocellulose as a nano-reinforcement is mainly caused by its high strength and rigidity combined with its low molecular weight, as well as its biodegradability, biocompatibility and renewability. Compared to microcrystalline cellulose, cellulose nanofibrils are more effective in reinforcing biopolymers due to the interactions between the nanoelements that form a percolated network connected by hydrogen bonds when they are well dispersed in the polymeric matrix.
Cellulose nanomaterials have been extracted from various plant sources and have been shown to be effective in improving the mechanical properties of biopolymeric films formed by starches, alginates and chitosan. In view of the environmental concern and the legislative demands regarding the destination of the material at the end of its useful life cycle, the use of natural fibers for the extraction of nanomaterials such as micro and nanofibrils becomes viable, since they are renewable raw materials and biodegradable, and have properties that successfully meet desirable characteristics as a reinforcing material.
The pupunheira (Bactris gasipaes) belongs to the palmaceae family, native to the American humid tropics, cultivated by Indians from Central America and the Amazon since approximately 1545. This species is adapted to Amazonian conditions, however it can be cultivated in several Brazilian regions, as in the United States. states of Bahia, Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Paraná and Santa Catarina. In the state of Paraná, the coastal region presents itself as a potential area for planting peach palm due to favorable climatic conditions (high temperatures and high rainfall). From 2004 to 2007 there was an increase of 90% of the cultivated area in this region.
The peach palm is a monocot, belongs to the Aricaceae family, and can reach up to 20 meters in height. The stipe is practically cylindrical, with a diameter ranging from 10 to 20 cm, divided by rings with thorns (internodes) and rings without thorns (nodes), which are scars left by falling leaves. Due to the climate and physiological stage of the plant, there may be between 15 and 25 leaves, which have 120 to 240 long leaflets along the rachis and which are grouped at the top of the tree.
Interest in peach palm hearts began in the 1970s, when the predatory exploitation of the juçara palm tree in southeastern Brazil had reached its peak and native palm heart reserves were already quite dilapidated. The peach palm stands out for its potential for the rational exploitation of heart of palm.
The agro-industrial exploration and industrialization of peach palm heart brings great socioeconomic benefits, however, only a small part of the biomass, approximately 1 m of a 15 m high palm tree, is commercialized as heart of palm, the remainder being discarded, resulting in the generation of large amounts of waste.
Non-commercial organic matter, such as leaves, stems and outer sheaths, is discarded in the forests and the middle sheaths are discarded in the industry. One hectare of peach palm cultivation produces about 19.5 tons/year of dry matter, and the amount of raw heart of palm extracted is only 1.76 tons/hectare/year, that is, 9% of the biomass produced. Little has been done in the transformation or use of these residues, which total 70% of the final production and constitute an environmental problem.
It is estimated that the production of agro-industrial residues in Brazil is around 250 million tons/year, which are composed of cellulose (20 to 60 %), hemicellulose (20 to 30 %) and lignin (15 to 30 %) , varying the concentration according to the raw material.
In addition to compromising the environment, not using by-products represents a great loss of biomass that could be used to obtain high-value products. Currently, there is a global trend to efficiently use all natural resources. Sustainable food production and waste recovery are issues that will be increasingly considered by agroindustries. In turn, the pulp obtained from agro-industrial residues has a quality similar to that of traditional wood, and these have the advantage of having shorter growth cycles and, above all, lower lignin contents, thus leading to simpler delignification processes.
When it is possible to promote the use of residues with high cellulosic value such as peach palm outer sheaths, which present approximately 60% of their weight in cellulosic portions, generating products with high added value such as portions of cellulose on a nanometric scale using a technology of simple and easily reproducible production such as mechanical defibrillation, the problem generated by depositing a large amount of this waste in the environment is solved, also generating an increase in profitability for the producer and the processing industry.
Cellulose fibrillar nanostructures are low cost, environmentally friendly and exhibit exceptional mechanical characteristics, which make them one of the most attractive classes of materials for the preparation of nanomaterials, being an excellent way to add value to by-products and waste from the agroindustry.
It appears that the activities associated with the production and industrialization of heart of palm result in the generation of large amounts of waste, which can represent a problem for the environment, since unused organic matter, if incorporated into the soil, promotes a humification process, microbial activity that temporarily causes a nitrogen deficiency in the soil, due to its consumption by decomposing microorganisms. In this way, these residues should be adequately treated in order to reduce environmental problems and contribute to the sustainable development of the producing regions. Initiatives to treat and/or use waste become essential to minimize environmental and public health problems, as well as to generate alternative sources of income, thus contributing to sustainable development.
The growing concern for the environment, verified over the last few years, has served as a basis for societies and organizations to question the models of exploitation of natural resources, addressing not only the intensity with which they are exploited, but also the environmental consequences resulting from their use.
Thus, several ways have been sought, not only to reduce the intensity of exploitation of natural resources, but also with a focus on the reuse of by-products generated in the various industrial processes.
The outer sheaths discarded after the extraction of heart of palm stalks are lignocellulosic residues, generally characterized by their low solubility and degradability, needing to be reduced into very fine particles to enhance their treatment. Its degradability is determined by the ratio between cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin.
This agroecological waste, composed of lignocellulosic plant material, can be considered a non-timber forest product and after chemical and mechanical treatments can be used as a renewable source to obtain cellulose nanofibrils.
These structures are being inexhaustibly studied and have shown potential innovation in the formulation of composites as physical reinforcement, but also in the formulation of paper, food, cosmetics, use in medical areas and also in the automotive, air and naval fields.
This proposal comprises the use of a compound with no commercial value and that causes damage to the environment when not correctly discarded to a product with high added value and high technological interest, being a viable alternative for the disposal of waste generated during the cutting of palm trees for heart of palm extraction.
Obtaining cellulose nanofibrils from the external sheaths of the Bactris gasipaes palm tree is made possible through the mechanical defibrillation of previously separated and delignified fiber solutions.
The fiber delignification or bleaching process was carried out by chemical treatment at controlled temperature and pH.
The sheaths previously cut into chips, with an approximate moisture content of 8%, were hydrated in water, at a consistency of 10%, remaining in contact for 24 hours at room temperature, in order to favor the mechanical separation of the fibers.
The solution of chips and water was refined in a mill, thus taking place the mechanical process of disintegration of the fibers in order to promote their individualization, favoring the subsequent action of the bleaching agent.
The delignification or bleaching process was adapted from Wise et al. (1946). For every 10 g of pulp, 1.5 g of sodium chlorite (NaClO2) at 80% and 10 drops of glacial acetic acid in 160 ml of distilled water were used. The material was held at 80°C for 1 hour. Three delignification steps were performed, and at each interval the pulp was washed with plenty of water in order to eliminate possible NaClO2 residues.
At the end of the last bleaching step, the fibers were washed, centrifuged to remove excess water and then stored.
From the delignified fibers it was possible to obtain a suspension of cellulose nanofibrils in water from the mechanical defibrillation of the fibers in a colloidal mill.
The conditions that made it possible to obtain nanofibrils were: rotation speed of 1500 rpm, opening between the stones between 0.1 and 0.5 mm, consistency of fiber/water solutions between 0.1 and 4% (from absolutely dry fibers ) and number of passes between 2 and 40.
At the end of the process, gel-like suspensions of cellulose nanofibrils were obtained. All the conditions mentioned above made it possible to obtain nanometric characteristics confirmed by transmission electron microscopy, with fibers with nanometric diameters ranging between 13.76 and 23.04 nm and micrometric lengths that cannot be defined by the tangled nature of cellulose nanofibrils .
The crystallinity index of the nanofibrils was verified by X-ray diffraction and was between 50-60%, and their glass transition temperature was determined by thermal analysis, being above 240oC.
The characteristics of the final products obtained mentioned in paragraphs 36 and 37, prove the ability of the described process (Image 5) to obtain cellulose nanofibrils from peach palm residues with potential application in several areas of science and technology, from physical reinforcement in polymeric compounds and packaging to body agents in food, tincture or cosmetic formulations.
This potential is indicated in patents that prove the multiple uses of nanocellulose from different sources. As physical reinforcement in biodegradable films (CN104987516B); film formation with only nanocellulose (CN104479368A); in edible packaging and coatings (CN103254469A, US 20140272013A1); in the formulation of cosmetics (KR101771606B1; in the production of gels and hydrogels (EP2236545A1, KR101677979B, CN102666669A), membranes (CN106188600A) and foams (US20130330417A1).
