The retention device (20) comprises a support surface and a pair of elongate retention elements (23,24) each having a proximal part (33) adjacent the support surface and a distal part (34) in which the elements retaining brackets define a channel (36) between them. The channel (36) has a first section (25) for receiving and closing a portion of the sliding closure and a second section (26) for receiving only the closing strips (56) but not the sliding closure (58). The channel (36) additionally has a slot (30) formed by the distal portions (34) of the retaining elements (23,24) where the slot (30) is wide enough to allow the side panels (52) of the thermoplastic bag. (50) enters slot (30) but prevents the closure strips (56) from passing through slot (30).
