Abstract

A process for purifying an aqueous feed stream comprising an organic acid product such as lactic acid and a strong contaminant such as pyruvic acid or oxalic acid is described. The molar concentration of the organic acid product in the feed stream is typically at least 20 times greater than the molar concentration of the strong contaminant. The aqueous feed stream is contacted with a first immiscible basic extractor that has at least 3 times greater affinity for the strong contaminant than for the organic acid product. The greatest art of strong contaminant and some organic acid product becomes complex with the first immiscible basic extractor. The first complex immiscible basic extractor is separated from the aqueous stream, thereby producing a first effluent stream comprising organic acid product and having a higher molar organic acid to strong molar contaminant ratio than that of the aqueous feed stream. The first complex immiscible basic extractor is contacted with a displacer acid. The first immiscible basic extractor has a greater affinity for the displacer acid than for the strong contaminant or organic acid product and, as a result, the organic acid product and the strong contaminant are displaced over a period of time from the first complex immiscible basic extractor, producing a second effluent stream comprising a larger amount of organic acid product and a third effluent stream comprising a larger amount of strong contaminant.
