Abstract

The present invention relates to a novel online pulp digester control system. More particularly, this invention relates to a new control system that employs real-time measurements from ion mobility spectrometry to automatically and rapidly determine the physical and chemical characteristics of the wood supply feed being fed. in a pulp digester and thus maximize process efficiency, minimize chemical and energy consumption and improve product uniformity. An intelligent control system that utilizes moisture content and wood chip species in a pulping process comprises: (a) transporting wood chips from a wood chip storage facility to a digester; (b) examine the pieces of wood as they are transported to determine their species and moisture content by heating the pieces of wood and to understand the moisture content and characterize the species of the wood pieces by species signatures obtained by an ion mobility spectrometer, and (c) regulate the flow of steam and chemicals supplied to the digester.
