This mechanism allows synchronized broadcasting of MPEG-4 streams to an ATSC digital TV system without a change in the ATSC standard when broadcasting data. In a video and audio information transmission system, where the system is restricted to operate according to a given standard, including the application of a particular coding methodology, the transmission of information using a coding methodology that is independent of the coding methodology is provided by coding the information in a plurality of coded increments (310) according to the independent coding methodology; and encapsulating the encoded information increments in a payload portion (324) of the transmission packets established according to the given standard.
