Abstract

This invention provides a low profile fuel tank assembly having an elongated fuel delivery module mounted horizontally on the fuel tank and independent of a flange, which covers a single fuel tank access hole. An integrated fuel pump and associated module engine dictate the length of the module. The engine and pump have a rotation axis preferably substantially horizontally arranged in the fuel tank. Because the fuel delivery module is supported by the fuel tank housing or bottom, independent of the flange, the access hole can be located anywhere on the fuel tank to simplify fuel tank entry and minimize repair procedures. During assembly, the module is inserted into the fuel tank through the access hole, and is then seated locked preferably in a support structure permanently seated on an internal surface of the fuel tank.
