Abstract

AND SYSTEM FOR PRODUCING DUAL POLARIZATION STATES WITH CONTROLLED RF Beam WIDTHS". An antenna system can generate RF radiation fields having dual simultaneous polarization states and having substantially rotationally symmetrical radiation patterns. The antenna system generates RF radiation patterns where the beam widths of the respective RF fields for the respective radiation elements are substantially equal and are relatively large despite the compact physical size of the antenna system. The antenna system may include one or more patch radiators and a non-resonant repair separated from the others by an air dielectric and relatively small spacer elements. Repair radiators and non-resonant repair may be pre-formed to increase polarization discrimination. Lower repair radiators may be mounted on a printed circuit board which may include an RF power supply network and a ground plane defining a plurality of symmetrically shaped grooves. Grooves within the ground plane of the printed circuit board may be excited by trunks that are part of the printed circuit board power network. The grooves, in turn, can establish a transverse magnetic mode of RF radiation in a cavity that is disposed adjacent the ground plane of the printed circuit board and an earth plane of the antenna system. The printed circuit board power supply may be aligned with cavity parts such that the functional cavity parts such as a heat bath to absorb or receive the thermal energy produced by the power supply network.
