An allantoin-containing dermal cream composition may comprise allantoin and at least one anionic or nonionic emulsifier that is substantially hydrophilic and water soluble. The pH of the composition is in a range from about 3.0 to about 6.0; preferably, the pH of the composition is from about 5.0 to about 6.0. The composition may also comprise an anionic acid polymer. An acid anionic polymer is preferably a carboxypolymethylene polymer. The composition may also comprise a carbohydrate polymer such as galactoarabinan, polygalactose or polyarabinosis. The composition may further comprise other components, such as herbal extracts, an antioxidant component, an emollient component, a chelator, a solvent component, or a preservative component. The composition is useful as a skin protector.
